When a screenshot seems to fail on an HP laptop, the cause is usually one of two things: the key is acting as a function key instead of Print Screen, or the capture went to the clipboard and you expected a saved file. Work through the shortcuts below in order, and check where each one writes its result.
Which screenshot shortcut does what
HP’s Windows keyboard-shortcut guidance describes two different capture behaviors. Print Screen copies an image of the screen to the Windows clipboard so you can paste it. Windows + Print Screen saves a PNG file to the Screenshots folder inside the Pictures library. Fn + Print Screen is a third option, and whether you need it depends on your keyboard layout.
| Shortcut | Where the capture goes | How to confirm it worked |
|---|---|---|
| Print Screen | Windows clipboard (no file is created) | Open Paint or a document and press Ctrl + V |
| Windows + Print Screen | PNG file in PicturesScreenshots | Open File Explorer, go to Pictures, then Screenshots |
| Fn + Print Screen | Same as Print Screen on keyboards that need Fn; HP says this is model-dependent | Check the key legend on your keyboard, then test with Ctrl + V as above |
HP’s general guidance on special keys is that “on most laptop keyboards, you must press and hold the fn key before pressing the key with the symbol or icon to perform the function.” That is a rule of thumb for most models, not a guarantee for yours, which is why the steps below test the combinations one at a time.

- Press Print Screen by itself. Open Paint, Word, or another app that accepts images, then press Ctrl + V. If an image appears, the key works. The capture is on the clipboard only, so no file exists yet.
- If nothing pastes, press Fn + Print Screen. HP notes that some HP laptop keyboards need Fn held down with this key. Paste again to check.
- Press Windows + Print Screen to save a file. Open File Explorer, go to Pictures, then Screenshots, and look for the newest PNG. The screen may dim briefly during capture, which confirms the shortcut registered.
- If other function keys behave unexpectedly, check Fn Lock. See the Fn Lock section below.
- If function keys still behave wrongly, check Action Keys Mode. See the Action Keys Mode section below.
- If none of these work, identify the exact model before doing anything else. Use the model number on the bottom case or in System Information, then read the keyboard guide for that model on HP’s support site.
Check Fn Lock and Action Keys Mode
Fn Lock and Action Keys Mode both change how the top row of keys behaves, so a screenshot key can appear dead when it is actually sending a different function.

Fn Lock
On some HP products, Fn Lock is toggled with Fn + left Shift, and an indicator light shows whether it is on. Not every model has this control or indicator, so look for an Fn Lock marking or light on your keyboard first. If your model uses the combination, press it once and retest the screenshot shortcut. Do not assume the same combination applies to every HP laptop.
Action Keys Mode
HP’s notebook guidance describes Action Keys Mode as a BIOS setting on supported notebooks. To check it:

- Restart the laptop and press F10 repeatedly as it starts to enter BIOS setup.
- Open the System Configuration menu and find Action Keys Mode.
- Make a note of the current value before changing it, so you can restore it.
Some business notebook families use different settings or menu paths, so if you cannot find the option, use the HP instructions written for your exact model instead of guessing.
When it is not a shortcut problem
The documented shortcuts and settings above are the first things to rule out. HP’s sources reviewed here do not establish a hardware fault or identify a replacement keyboard part for any specific model. If Print Screen, Windows + Print Screen, and Fn + Print Screen all fail across several apps, and Fn Lock and Action Keys Mode behave as expected, confirm the model and keyboard layout with HP support before buying a keyboard, keycap, or other part.

If you use a non-HP external keyboard, remember that its Print Screen key may use different Fn behavior than the built-in keyboard, so test the same three shortcuts on that keyboard too.
HP’s support pages used for this guide are its keyboard-shortcut article for Windows PCs, its article on locking and unlocking the fn key for notebook PCs, and its “Getting to know your computer” guide. Button placement and BIOS menu names can change between models and BIOS versions, so match each step to what your screen shows.
