On 30 September 2026, Flydubai flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after an incident in the flight deck. The aircraft landed safely, and Flydubai said passengers were safe and accounted for. The airline said the motive was unknown; the UAE ordered an investigation. Public statements confirm that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) three days earlier, but they do not establish a connection between that meeting, Iran and the flight incident.
What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?
Flydubai said FZ1073 was flying from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport on 30 September when an incident occurred en route. It landed at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. The airline said all passengers were safe and accounted for.
In a later statement, Flydubai described an altercation in the flight deck. It said off-duty Flydubai crew members who were travelling on the flight secured the aircraft, diverted it and landed it safely. The airline did not publicly identify a motive, saying the reasons remained unknown and subject to formal investigation.

The Associated Press, citing officials, reported that 174 people were aboard and that the co-pilot stabbed the captain. AP also reported that the aircraft descended from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about a minute. Those details come from AP’s reporting and officials it cited; they are not all part of Flydubai’s public statement.

In a later follow-up, AP reported an allegation that the co-pilot used the cockpit crash axe. That, too, should be understood as an attributed report, not as a finding announced by investigators. Descriptions such as “attempted hijack” are not a final legal or investigative conclusion in the information made public so far.
What are investigators trying to establish?
The UAE Attorney General ordered an investigation into the incident’s circumstances and motive. The Attorney General’s office said the investigation would gather information and evidence, determine what happened, and examine whether the incident was connected to terrorist activity, prior planning or direction. That describes the scope of the inquiry; it does not establish that terrorism or prior planning was involved.

Flydubai has said the motive is unknown while the formal investigation proceeds. AP’s follow-up reported that the UAE was leading the investigation. No final finding on motive has been reported in the material available as of 3 October 2026.

No confirmed evidence in the public statements and reporting covered here establishes an Iranian role or a link between Iran and the flight-deck incident. Netanyahu said it was too early to say whether Iran was behind it. Flydubai also urged against premature speculation while authorities gathered facts.

The UAE inquiry is examining whether the incident had a terrorist purpose or was planned or directed, but that question remains under investigation. An inquiry into a possible connection is not proof of one. The incident should not be presented as a confirmed Iranian attack or as a proven act of terrorism.

According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu and his wife visited the UAE on Sunday, 27 September 2026, at MBZ’s invitation. The Israeli account said the visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations and regional challenges. The UAE’s state news agency, WAM, likewise reported that the leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen ties.

Those public accounts establish that the meeting took place and describe its stated focus. They do not say Iran was the meeting’s official agenda, nor do they connect it to the FZ1073 incident three days later.

A separate, disputed account of the visit’s purpose
AP reported an attributed account that Netanyahu went to ask MBZ to deny reports that the Emirati leader had warned him before the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack. Netanyahu’s office disputed AP’s account of the visit’s purpose. That political reporting is distinct from the official Israeli and Emirati statements and does not establish a connection to the later flight incident.

How to read the claims together
- Confirmed by Flydubai: FZ1073 diverted to Tabuk after an incident, landed safely, and passengers were safe and accounted for. The airline described a flight-deck altercation and said crew travelling aboard secured and diverted the aircraft.
- Reported by AP: The passenger count, the reported stabbing, the rapid descent and the alleged use of a cockpit crash axe. These details should remain attributed to AP and its cited officials.
- Confirmed as an official action: UAE authorities ordered an investigation into the incident and its possible circumstances, motive and connections.
- Not established: A final motive, a terrorist purpose, an Iranian role, or a link between the flight incident and Netanyahu’s meeting with MBZ.
