Flu activity is increasing in some parts of the United States, but the national level remains low. If you have not had a flu vaccine for the 2026–2027 season, CDC guidance says September and October are preferred for most people who need one dose. October is not a cutoff: vaccination can continue while flu viruses circulate and unexpired vaccine is available.

What “early” means this season

In its report for the week ending September 26, 2026, the CDC said influenza activity was low nationally but increasing. Influenza accounted for 3.4% of clinical laboratory respiratory specimens tested that week. That is a measure of test positivity, not the percentage of people who had flu, and it does not show that the season is already severe. CDC’s Week 38 report is preliminary and updated weekly.

The Associated Press reported on October 2 that activity was increasing earlier in parts of the West. The distinction matters: there is a regional early-season signal, not evidence that the entire country is experiencing an early or intense flu season. Local trends can differ and change as the season progresses.

Should you get a flu vaccine now?

For most people who need one dose, CDC prefers vaccination in September or October. If you have not been vaccinated this season, getting it soon is reasonable. CDC advises continuing vaccination after October while influenza viruses circulate and unexpired vaccine is available, so the end of October is not a hard deadline. CDC recommends seasonal flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. The right product depends on age and individual health circumstances. If you have a vaccine contraindication or allergy, are pregnant, or have a complex medical history, ask a healthcare professional which option is appropriate. CDC’s seasonal flu vaccine guidance covers eligibility and product selection.

What changed in the 2026–2027 vaccine?

All three vaccine virus components were updated from the 2025–2026 season. CDC lists different recommended components for egg-based vaccines and for cell-based or recombinant vaccines on its 2026–2027 flu season page. The update does not, by itself, establish how well this season’s vaccine will work in the United States.

The CDC sources available for this season do not provide a current U.S. vaccine-effectiveness estimate. Effectiveness can vary, and figures from another country or a previous season should not be treated as a measurement of the 2026–2027 U.S. vaccine.

How severe might the season be?

The CDC’s September 2026 outlook said the season was likely to be moderate in severity, but with low to moderate confidence; it also emphasized that severity is difficult to predict before a season develops. A rise in activity in some western areas does not establish how severe the national season will be. The CDC respiratory disease season outlook should be read as a forecast, not a settled outcome.

What vaccination can and cannot promise

Vaccination reduces the risk of flu and its worst outcomes, but it is not a guarantee against infection. Dr. Ryan Stanton of the American College of Emergency Physicians told the Associated Press, “But just like the seat belt in your car, it decreases risk.” The comparison is about reducing risk, not eliminating it. AP’s report also describes the regional increases and expert advice to consider vaccination soon: Associated Press, October 2, 2026.
