Reuters reported on October 8, 2026, that Flock Safety plans to cut about 270 jobs—roughly 18% of its workforce—after offering employees a voluntary buyout. The company had not publicly confirmed the plan and declined to comment to Reuters, so the figures and expected timing remain attributed to unnamed sources with direct knowledge.
How many jobs is Flock Safety reportedly cutting?
Reuters said the planned reduction would affect roughly 270 employees, or about 18% of Flock Safety’s workforce. The report, based on people with direct knowledge of the plan, said affected employees were expected to leave at the end of October 2026. That was an anticipated date, not confirmation that departures occurred.
Reuters described the cuts as following a voluntary employee buyout program. In September, WIRED reported that Flock had offered employees a voluntary separation program with a severance package, citing an internal email shared with the outlet. WIRED’s September report provides that earlier context.
Did Flock Safety confirm the layoffs?
No public confirmation appears in the cited coverage. Reuters reported the plan based on unnamed sources with direct knowledge, and said Flock Safety declined to comment. The estimated headcount, workforce share and end-of-October timing should therefore be treated as reported expectations, not a company announcement or verified completed layoffs. Why is Flock Safety facing backlash?
Flock’s network of cameras and license-plate readers has drawn scrutiny over surveillance, privacy and how law-enforcement agencies use data. August coverage described concerns about misuse by some law-enforcement users and changes Flock announced to its platform. The Associated Press reported on those changes amid the scrutiny; its account is available at the AP’s August report.
Political scrutiny has also increased. Axios reported in August that Sen. Josh Hawley requested information from Flock about its data collection, retention, dissemination and law-enforcement access. That was a request for information—not a subpoena; Axios described a subpoena only as a possible next step. Axios reported on Hawley’s inquiry.

These developments help explain the broader backlash around Flock’s technology, but they do not establish that opposition caused the job cuts. Reuters linked the reported reductions to the climate of criticism, but the company did not provide a rationale in its response to the outlet.
What other recent developments put the cuts in context?
The reported employee buyout preceded Reuters’ October story. Separately, Flock’s partnerships and platform have faced public and institutional scrutiny. In February 2026, Ring and Flock ended a planned integration. The AP reported that Ring said the integration would require more time and resources than anticipated; Ring did not cite a public backlash campaign around a separate Ring advertisement as its reason. These are distinct responses and events: an employee separation offer, platform changes, a congressional information request, and the end of a planned business integration. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures or as proof of a single cause for the reported workforce reduction.
