Flock Safety reportedly plans to let go of about 270 employees, roughly 18% of its workforce, at the end of October 2026. Reuters reported the plan on October 8, 2026, citing people with direct knowledge of it. The company had not made the plan public, and Reuters said Flock declined to comment. The cuts follow a voluntary separation program that Flock opened in September, which WIRED reported in a separate story. Neither outlet has confirmed a final headcount, so the figures below should be read as reported estimates rather than company-confirmed numbers.
What Reuters reported about the planned cuts
Reuters reported that Flock planned to cut about 270 jobs, which it put at about 18% of the company’s roughly 1,500 employees. Its sources were people with direct knowledge of the plan who asked not to be named because it had not been announced. Reuters also reported that employees were expected to leave at the end of October.
Three things are not established in the reporting: how the cuts are divided across teams, the exact final departure dates, and whether affected employees receive severance terms separate from the voluntary program. Flock has not publicly confirmed any of the numbers.

WIRED reported on September 18, 2026 that Flock had announced a voluntary employee separation program, based on an internal email the outlet reviewed. Applications opened that day and were due October 2. Employees were expected to learn whether their applications had been accepted on October 9.

The sequence matters for reading the news. The voluntary program came first. The involuntary cuts were reported later, on October 8, while applications were still being processed. Reporting does not say how many employees applied or accepted, so no one can yet calculate how much of the reported 270 would be covered by buyout departures and how much would be involuntary.

Buyout terms as reported
WIRED reported that some voluntary-program offers were in the tens of thousands of dollars. It also reported several months of health coverage and up to two years to exercise stock options after separation. These details come from the internal email and from people familiar with the offer, as WIRED described them. Individual packages may differ, and the reporting does not establish a single standard package for all employees.

What is confirmed and what is not
- Reported by Reuters, not confirmed by Flock: the plan to cut about 270 employees, about 18% of staff, with departures at the end of October.
- Reported by WIRED from an internal email and sources: the September 18 launch of the voluntary program, the October 2 deadline, and the buyout terms described above.
- Not established by either outlet: how many employees accepted buyouts, the final headcount after both programs, the affected teams, and any separate severance for the reported cuts.
- Not established as fact: that 270 people have already left, that every employee received the same voluntary terms, or that the cuts have a single cause.
The business and public pressures behind the reporting
Both outlets describe Flock’s business as under heavy public scrutiny. Flock is an Atlanta-based surveillance technology company, founded in 2017, that sells cameras and software to law enforcement agencies and businesses. Reuters reported scrutiny from regulators, lawmakers and privacy advocates, along with legal challenges and concerns about data sharing.

WIRED also reported that one source believed layoffs were almost certain without voluntary buyouts. These are sources’ accounts of pressures on the business. Flock has not said they explain the October cuts.

Public opinion figures reported by Reuters come from a Reuters/Ipsos poll. In it, 38% said they support and 47% said they oppose the use of Flock cameras in their community. Reuters’ excerpt does not give field dates or sample details, so the figures should be read as a snapshot without a known date range or margin of error. WIRED also cited an advocacy group, not an independent tally, saying 93 city and county governments cut ties with Flock in August 2026 alone.
What the company has said
WIRED reported that CEO Garrett Langley, in an appearance on the All-In podcast the previous month, said the backlash against the company had done “the biggest damage” in terms of “internal morale.” That is the chief executive’s own view of the effect on staff. It is not an explanation Flock has given for the reported layoffs.

WIRED also quoted Flock’s internal announcement of the voluntary program, which described it as offering “greater agency” and treating employees with “transparency, respect, and choice.” Those phrases are the company’s own description of the program, not an independent assessment of it.
If you work at Flock or are affected
Employees weighing a voluntary offer should confirm the terms in writing: the amount, health coverage length, stock option exercise window, and the final separation date. Reported terms may vary by person. Flock has not published the terms of any involuntary separation, so anyone in a team that might be affected should ask HR directly for the written notice and severance terms that apply to them.

As the reporting stands, the open questions are the final headcount, how many employees left through the voluntary program, and whether Flock will confirm the October plan. Future company statements or follow-up reporting would be the place to check those points.
Reuters reported the cuts on October 8, 2026, and WIRED reported the voluntary program on September 18, 2026. Both dates are reporting dates, not company announcement dates.
