Fleet tracking cameras range from simple road-recording dashcams to connected video-telematics systems that pair footage with GPS, vehicle events, alerts, and fleet-management software. They can help teams review incidents, coach drivers, and see operational context—but benefits depend on camera configuration, platform fit, and how managers use the footage. No camera system guarantees fewer crashes, lower insurance premiums, or a particular return on investment.
What is a fleet tracking camera?
A fleet camera is a device installed in a work vehicle to record video. A standalone camera may save footage locally, while a connected video-telematics system can associate video with vehicle location, event data, and a management platform. Capabilities vary by vendor, model, and configuration.
For example, Geotab describes event triggers such as tailgating, phone use, rolling stops, and speeding, with footage available through an interface integrated with MyGeotab. AT&T Fleet Complete describes video telematics that combines dash cameras with sensor analytics, short event videos, and—in its Vision offering—AI voice feedback. These are vendor-described features, not evidence that every system detects the same events or produces the same results.
How does recording and tracking work?
In a connected system, a camera captures video and the platform may associate a clip with telematics information such as the vehicle’s location or an event alert. Some systems record or upload footage when a defined event occurs; others may offer continuous capture or live viewing. Upload timing, connectivity needs, and storage and retention options differ.

Geotab says its GO Focus is event-based, with recording limited to key driving events, and notes that solutions differ in live-streaming and post-event upload capabilities. Confirm the exact behavior of the selected model and configuration: “event-based” does not by itself establish what is recorded, how long it is retained, or when a manager can view it.
Which camera configuration fits your fleet?
Road-facing
A road-facing camera records the view ahead. It can provide context about road conditions and incidents without capturing the driver’s face or cabin. Geotab describes GO Focus as a road-facing, event-based option. This configuration may suit fleets that need incident footage but do not need driver-facing video.
Dual-facing
A dual-facing camera captures both the road and the cabin. Samsara and Motive document dual-facing models. The additional view may help managers assess driver behavior and conditions inside the cab, but it also makes clear notice, access controls, and a considered privacy policy more important.

Expanded or multi-camera
Side, rear, or other auxiliary cameras can broaden visibility beyond the windshield. Samsara describes an AI Multicam configuration with up to four HD cameras; Geotab documents a GO Focus Pro and auxiliary-camera path for broader views. Confirm the supported camera count, compatible hardware, placement, and whether analysis is continuous or event-triggered before assuming a particular area is covered.
What can fleet cameras help a team do?
Review incidents and provide claim context
Video can help reconstruct an incident and document what happened when accounts are disputed. Geotab describes video evidence for incident analysis and disputes, and Verizon Connect describes footage that may help defend a driver. Footage is evidence to evaluate, not a guarantee that a claim will be resolved in the fleet’s favor.
Support coaching and safety workflows
Event clips and in-cab prompts can give managers material for targeted coaching. Geotab and AT&T describe alerts and coaching-related features. The benefit depends on an effective process for reviewing events, discussing them constructively, and following up; installing cameras alone does not establish that driving will improve.

Connect video with operational information
When a camera is integrated with telematics, teams may be able to view footage alongside location, routes, and event data. AT&T describes location tracking, route replay, driver-behavior reporting, and AI video telematics within its fleet platform. Such visibility is useful only if the platform fits the fleet’s workflow and staff can act on the information.

The 2025 Fleet Technology Trends Report by GPS Insight reports survey respondents’ views and reported outcomes. It says 68% of dashcam users considered their video solution extremely or very beneficial, and 47% reported positive ROI in less than one year. Those are respondent-reported findings, not controlled estimates or a forecast for another fleet.
The same report says 75% of respondents said in-cab video technology helped improve driver safety in its current survey year, compared with 70% in 2023 and 73% in 2024. It also reports that 50% said in-cab video helped decrease insurance costs and 42% said it helped reduce accident costs. These figures describe respondents’ reports; they do not establish a universal causal effect or promise savings. The report characterizes camera adoption as “a long-term investment, not an overnight solution.”

Verizon Connect says insurance discounts may be possible and directs customers to check with their insurer. A discount is not automatic: confirm eligibility and terms with the insurer rather than assuming camera installation will reduce premiums.

- Match coverage to the job. Compare road-facing, driver-facing, side, and rear views, along with the number of supported cameras and compatible hardware.
- Clarify what gets recorded. Ask whether recording is event-triggered or continuous, whether live viewing is available, when clips upload, and what retention settings apply.
- Check detection and coaching features. Confirm which events the system detects, whether it provides in-cab alerts, and how supervisors review clips and coach drivers.
- Verify platform and vehicle compatibility. Check integration with your existing GPS or telematics platform, fleet dashboard, and vehicle types. Verizon Connect states that its AI Dashcams require its Reveal or Fleet platform and are not standalone.
- Plan installation and support. Establish whether installation is self-service or professional, what power connection and calibration are needed, and what support is included for deployment.
- Set privacy and access rules. Decide who can view footage, how long it is kept, what recording scope is appropriate, and how drivers will be informed. Requirements depend on local employment and privacy rules; the product sources cited here do not establish jurisdiction-specific legal obligations, so seek appropriate local advice.
- Compare total requirements and cost. Include hardware, subscriptions, connectivity, storage, installation, and support. A camera’s hardware price alone may not reflect the cost of a platform-dependent service.

When is a commercial system a better fit than a basic dashcam?
A marketplace dashcam may suit a limited need for local video recording, but do not assume it will integrate with fleet GPS, provide event alerts, support manager workflows, or include enterprise support. Commercial video-telematics systems can combine those functions, but may require compatible vehicles, a specific platform, subscriptions, and connectivity. Check compatibility for the exact camera, vehicle, and software before buying.
