Microsoft’s available documentation for the Windows Backup app does not define error 0x80040304, so no single fix is guaranteed for it. The practical route is to confirm which backup tool is showing the error, then follow the Microsoft-documented checks for that tool. This guide covers the Windows Backup app and File History on Windows 11, and it separates the steps Microsoft supports from fixes that circulate online without official backing.

What the code does and does not tell you

Two sources mention 0x80040304, and neither explains it in the context of the Windows Backup app.

  • Microsoft Open Specifications lists 0x80040304 as “UnexpectedType” in an Exchange protocol context. That is a mail-protocol definition, so it should not be applied to a Windows backup error.
  • The Geek Page (September 17, 2026) says the code can appear in both Windows Backup and File History. It recommends unlinking the Microsoft account, clearing caches, deleting stored credentials, resetting the Microsoft Store cache, or changing File History destinations. Microsoft’s documentation does not corroborate those causes or fixes. Treat them as unverified. Several involve account links or saved credentials, so they should not be your first move.

Because the code’s meaning is not established for this app, the approach below relies on the general Microsoft guidance for each tool, not on a code-specific repair.

Step 1: Identify which backup tool shows the error

Windows uses the name “Windows backup” for two different features. Note the exact screen where the error appears, then match it to the table.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Check Windows Backup app File History
What it protects Selected files, folders, settings, credentials, and apps, sent to the cloud Personal files saved to a separate location
Destination Cloud, associated with OneDrive External drive or network location
Account context Personal Microsoft account used with Windows (per Microsoft’s consumer guide “Back up and restore with Windows Backup”) Not addressed by Microsoft’s File History drive guidance; the checks are about the drive or network location
Where it is managed Settings > Accounts > Windows backup (Microsoft Learn, “Windows settings backup and restore Overview”) Control Panel > System and Security > File History
Microsoft guidance to follow Microsoft Support article KB5032038 and “Back up and restore with Windows Backup” Microsoft Support article “Reconnect Your File History Drive in Windows”

Do not mix the two sets of steps. A File History fix will not address a Windows Backup app error, and the reverse is also true.

Work through these checks in order. Each one is a general Microsoft-documented condition, not a confirmed explanation for 0x80040304.

  1. Confirm the account. Microsoft says backed-up information is associated with the Microsoft account used with Windows. Open Settings > Accounts > Your info and confirm that the account matches the one you expect.
  2. Check OneDrive sign-in and storage. When a OneDrive error occurs during backup, Microsoft lists three possible causes: you are not signed in to OneDrive, you have insufficient storage, or another OneDrive issue is present. Sign in to OneDrive, check your available storage, then run the backup again.
  3. Check whether the PC is managed. Microsoft states that Windows Backup is not supported for Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory users, and that a Microsoft account blocked by Group Policy can prevent the app from running. If the PC is a work or school device, do not keep trying fixes on your own; ask your organization’s IT administrator to confirm whether the app is permitted and whether policy controls apply.
  4. Review the settings controls. Microsoft’s settings-backup documentation places user controls under Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and notes that organizational policy can limit those options. If a policy has been applied, the controls may be locked.

File History: checks for an external drive or network location

Use these steps only if the error appears in File History.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reconnect the external drive. If the destination is a USB or other external drive, confirm it is plugged in and recognized by Windows.
  2. Reselect a network location. If the destination is a network location, open Control Panel > System and Security > File History and select the network location again.
  3. Run the backup. Wait for the next scheduled backup, or select File History > Run now to start one manually.

Microsoft’s File History guidance does not establish that changing drive letters, deleting File History configuration, or replacing the drive fixes the Windows Backup app error. Do not treat those as documented remedies for this code.

Before any recovery step, back up your files

If the error persists, Microsoft’s “Recovery options in Windows” article advises starting with the least disruptive option and backing up important files before any recovery. Copy critical documents and photos to a separate drive first.

Recovery choices differ in effect. For supported Windows 11 versions, Microsoft says reinstalling Windows through Windows Update keeps your files, apps, and settings. Other options can remove files or roll back changes. Do not use a reset or reinstall as a first response to a backup-app error.
