If Windows 11 will not synchronize with a time server, first check Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then inspect the actual Windows Time source before changing it. A domain-managed PC usually gets time from its organization’s Active Directory hierarchy; a standalone PC may use a manual NTP peer. If the source is correct but synchronization still fails, check DNS resolution and the network path for NTP traffic on UDP port 123.
Check Windows 11 date, time, and time zone settings
Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Turn on Set time automatically, verify the time zone, and select Sync now if the control is available. Enable automatic time-zone setting only if it is appropriate for your location and device.
If automatic setting is off, Windows also provides manual date and time correction on this page. An incorrect clock can interfere with Windows Update, so correct the time before treating update failures as evidence of a separate issue. Microsoft’s Windows date and time settings guide documents these controls.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator and query the Windows Time service (W32Time) configuration and status:

w32tm /query /configurationThe commands show the selected source, service status, peer list, and configuration. Microsoft calls w32tm the preferred command-line tool for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting W32Time. Local administrator rights are needed to manage the local service.
To ask Windows to rediscover sources and try synchronization again, run:
w32tm /resync /rediscoverSave the complete response. The message “The computer didn’t resync because no time data was available” narrows the investigation, but does not identify one cause by itself. DNS resolution, a target that does not provide NTP, and a blocked or missing network response can all be involved. See Microsoft’s explanation of the no-time-data error.

The right time source depends on how the computer is managed. Most domain-joined Windows computers synchronize through the Active Directory domain hierarchy, known as NT5DS. The forest-root PDC emulator is the exception that obtains time from an upstream source. A work PC configured to use a manual peer may therefore be using the wrong source for its organization.

For a domain client that was intentionally changed to a manual source, Microsoft documents returning it to the domain hierarchy with this sequence:
w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update
net stop w32time
net start w32timeDo not force this change on a managed device without checking with IT; policy may determine the correct source.
Check DNS and NTP network reachability
Windows Time uses NTP over UDP port 123. The server name must resolve, and the target must actually serve NTP. If a request leaves the PC but no response returns, UDP 123 may be blocked by a firewall or elsewhere on the network path. On a managed network, ask the administrator to verify the allowed path and policy rather than disabling the firewall.
To sample the response from a configured or intended server, run this in an elevated Command Prompt, replacing the example variable with the real server name:

If the computer is a standalone client—or its administrator has explicitly chosen manual peers—Microsoft documents this configuration form:
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntpserver.contoso.com clock.adatum.com" /syncfromflags:manual /updateThe hostnames shown are illustrative, not recommended public servers; do not paste them as real sources. Use only server names approved for your setup. Microsoft’s peer guidance discusses using three or more peers when configuring multiple sources and treating a second peer as a fallback when only two are used. Consult the organization’s policy or Microsoft’s W32Time tools and settings documentation before applying a manual configuration.
Use the symptom to choose the next check

How do I change the time server in Windows 11?
First confirm that a manual server is appropriate for the PC. Windows’ Settings page provides the basic synchronization control, while w32tm is Microsoft’s command-line interface for inspecting and configuring W32Time. On a managed PC, do not replace the domain hierarchy with a public server without approval. For an approved manual setup, use the /manualpeerlist and /syncfromflags:manual configuration form above, substituting the server names specified by your administrator.
Leave registry changes as a last resort
Prefer Windows Settings and the documented w32tm commands over direct registry edits. Microsoft warns that invalid W32Time registry values can cause unrecoverable Windows errors. Escalate complex configuration, domain, or policy issues to IT rather than experimenting with registry values.
