Your router may not need replacing: security, channel, or band settings can contribute to warnings and unreliable Wi-Fi. First check whether the router is supported and can use current security, then make one reversible change at a time and test where the problem occurs. Settings may help with local Wi-Fi issues, but they cannot raise the speed of your internet plan or fix an ISP outage.

Are the router’s default settings actually the problem?

Possibly, but “default” does not automatically mean “bad.” Router menus, firmware, and factory settings vary by model, and some settings are chosen to preserve compatibility. A crowded channel, outdated security mode, or disabled band can be worth investigating; none proves that your router is otherwise healthy or that a setting change will solve every connection problem.

A 2024 study, “Exposed by Default: A Security Analysis of Home Router Default Settings,” found that 17 of 40 routers in its sample did not support WPA3; the other 23 supported it but did not use it as the default. That is a result from the study’s sample, not a percentage of routers currently sold or a diagnosis of your device. NIST’s Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, published September 10, 2024, frames router security as important to protecting data and the integrity and availability of home networks.

Start with support, firmware, and security

  1. Identify the exact router. Record its make, model, and firmware version. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the current firmware and model-specific update instructions. If the manufacturer provides a way to record or back up settings, do that before changing them; there is no single backup procedure for every router.
  2. Change the administrator password. Replace the default password used to manage the router with a strong, unique one. This is separate from the password people use to join Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends changing default router credentials in its wireless network setup guidance.
  3. Choose a supported Wi-Fi security mode. Use WPA3 Personal when the router and household devices support it. If older devices need compatibility, WPA2/WPA3 Transitional may be appropriate. Avoid WEP, TKIP, and deprecated mixed modes; Microsoft identifies outdated security as a reason Windows may report a network as not secure and says an upgrade may be needed when the router cannot use current security. See its Wi-Fi network security guidance and Apple’s recommended router settings.
  4. Turn on automatic firmware updates if offered. Apple Support advises, “If possible, set your router to automatically install software and firmware updates when they become available.” If your router has no such option, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for checking updates rather than relying on a menu path from another model. Firmware updates can improve security, stability, and performance, but the available controls differ by router.

Should you use Auto or choose a Wi-Fi channel yourself?

Leave channel selection on Auto as a sensible starting point when your router offers it. Apple Support’s recommendation is: “Set to Auto.” If a particular room still has persistent dropouts or uneven performance, check nearby networks with a Wi-Fi analyzer app and compare results in the rooms where people actually use Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends this kind of local check in its Wi-Fi and home layout guidance.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

Manual selection can be useful when local measurements indicate congestion, but there is no universally best channel for every home. Change only the affected band’s channel if your router allows it, then test the same devices and locations. Restore Auto if the change makes performance worse. The available channel choices and controls depend on the router and its firmware.

What channel width should you use on each band?

Wi-Fi band Reliability-first starting point When to consider another setting
2.4 GHz 20 MHz. Apple recommends 20 MHz on this band. Microsoft describes 20 MHz as a troubleshooting step when signal strength is good and the channel is clear but reliability remains poor. Wider widths may increase throughput but are more susceptible to interference.
5 GHz Auto or all available widths, following Apple’s recommendation. Test a different width only when you have an observed compatibility or interference problem; performance depends on local radio conditions and the devices involved.
6 GHz Auto or all available widths, following Apple’s recommendation, if the router supports this band. Test a different width only for a specific observed issue. A device must support the band to use it.

Channel width and channel selection are different settings. Width affects how much radio spectrum a connection can use: wider settings can offer more throughput, but they are also more exposed to interference. The right trade-off depends on the band, nearby networks, router, and client devices. ASUS notes that its channel-width interface varies with firmware; consult the manual or support page for your exact model before changing it. See ASUS’s channel-bandwidth instructions and Apple’s recommendations.

Should you enable every band and wireless mode?

As a starting point, keep the bands and wireless modes supported by your router available. Apple recommends offering all modes and bands the router provides so each device can connect using what it supports. That does not mean every device will use every band or gain speed: older clients may lack support for newer bands or standards.

If an older device cannot join, look for the router maker’s model-specific compatibility options and instructions. There is no universal legacy-device setting that works for every router and client; avoid weakening security by switching to WEP, TKIP, or an unsecured network.

How to tell whether a setting change helped

  1. Locate the symptom. Note which device, room, band if known, and activity are affected. Check whether the problem is intermittent or constant.
  2. Change one setting at a time. For example, test channel selection before changing channel width. Record the original value so you can restore it.
  3. Repeat the same test in the same place. Compare connection reliability and performance on the affected device, rather than assuming a change helped because one speed check improved.
  4. Undo changes that do not help. Return the setting to its recorded value or Auto before testing another adjustment. Router interfaces differ, so use the manual or manufacturer support instructions for the model.

This process can help separate a local Wi-Fi issue from a broader connection problem. A change that makes one room better but another worse may reflect local coverage or interference rather than a single setting that works everywhere.

When the problem is placement, broadband, or the router itself

If tuning does not resolve the symptom, check causes that settings cannot fix. Microsoft notes that router placement, distance, and metal obstructions can affect Wi-Fi. If moving the router or device is not feasible, an extender may be a layout remedy, though it is not a general fix for every connection issue. Also check whether the problem affects wired connections: if it does, investigate the broadband service, outage, or cabling rather than assuming the Wi-Fi channel is responsible.

Consider replacing the router for a concrete limitation, not simply because it is old. An upgrade may be warranted if the device cannot use adequate current security or has another documented support or capability shortfall. Check the manufacturer’s support information for your model. The available guidance does not establish an age-based replacement rule, and without the model and symptoms it cannot determine whether a particular router remains suitable.
