First check that Premiere Pro and After Effects are on the same major version: Adobe says Dynamic Link will not work when their major versions differ. If the composition is already linked but playback is slow, use Adobe’s workarounds to reduce live-link processing. If Premiere freezes while creating the link, the available reports do not establish a universal cause or fix, so diagnose that symptom against your exact setup rather than assuming a cache or settings change will solve it.
Start by identifying when Premiere freezes
There are two different problems that can look alike:
- Playback or preview is slow after linking: Premiere may be waiting for After Effects to process a complex source composition before its updates appear.
- Premiere hangs while creating the link: for example, when choosing Replace with After Effects Composition or Create New Composition. A user report describes this behavior, but it does not establish a general cause or confirmed universal fix. Adobe Community report
Work through the checks below in order. The playback workarounds apply to an existing link; they should not be treated as a proven cure for a freeze during link creation.
Check Premiere Pro and After Effects versions
Adobe’s Dynamic Link guidance, updated August 18, 2026, says the applications must use the same major version; a mismatch means Dynamic Link will not work. Matching major versions is a prerequisite, not a guarantee that every freeze will be resolved. If they already match, continue based on whether the link exists and playback is slow, or the link cannot be created.
If the link exists but playback is delayed
A linked clip can depend on a complex After Effects composition. Adobe explains that changes may need extra processing in After Effects before they appear in Premiere, delaying preview and playback. Try these workflow options:
- Take the composition offline when you do not need its live updates during an editing pass.
- Disable the linked clip while editing other parts of the sequence.
- Render and replace the composition in Premiere to work with rendered media instead of continually processing the live composition.
These are playback workarounds, not repairs to Dynamic Link. A rendered replacement is no longer the live composition; use the live linked composition again when you need to continue making linked changes. Adobe: Work with Dynamic Link

Consider hardware only for a sustained complex workload
Adobe suggests considering more RAM or a faster processor when you frequently work with complex source compositions. That is general capacity guidance, not a diagnosis of every freeze or a specific upgrade recommendation. The right change depends on your computer and the compositions you use. If Premiere hangs while creating a link
Do not assume that clearing cache, reinstalling, renaming folders, or changing audio settings will fix this specific hang. Users have mentioned trying steps like these in community discussions, but the reports do not establish that they work. Instead, collect details that can distinguish a version problem, a project-specific problem, or a broader application freeze:
- Exact Premiere Pro and After Effects versions, including their major versions.
- Operating system version and computer hardware.
- The precise command that triggers the hang and whether After Effects opens.
- Whether it happens in the current project, a new project, or both.
- Whether the behavior is reproducible after restarting the applications.

Keep an After Effects cache issue separate
Adobe’s known-issues search excerpt reports a compressed disk caching crash affecting some After Effects 26.0 and 26.2 projects or hardware, with a workaround to disable compressed frames in Preferences > Disk > Disk Cache. This concerns an After Effects crash; it does not show that the issue causes Premiere to freeze while creating a Dynamic Link.
