If Netflix is silent through your soundbar, the cause is usually somewhere in the audio settings or connection between the playback device, TV, and sound system. If Netflix audio works but 5.1 surround does not, check a different set of things: the title and language, the playback device, and whether the audio output supports 5.1. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the symptom you actually have.
First, identify what is wrong
Is Netflix completely silent, does sound come from the TV but not the soundbar, is only surround sound missing, or is the audio distorted or noisy? These symptoms can have different causes, so do not assume every problem is a title-format issue.
- No sound: Check the active audio output, sound-system settings, and connections.
- TV sound but no soundbar sound: Check which device is handling Netflix audio and how that device is connected to the soundbar.
- Sound works, but there is no 5.1: Check the title, selected audio language, playback device, and output format.
- Distorted or hissing sound: Check whether the audio format is compatible with the equipment in the playback path.
If Netflix has no sound through the system
- Check the device running Netflix. Open its audio or sound settings and confirm that the intended output is selected. If Netflix runs on an external streaming device, check that device as well as the TV and soundbar.
- Check the sound equipment and connections. Confirm that the speakers and HDMI or optical connectors are properly connected. Menu names and available settings depend on the equipment.
- Restart the affected playback device. Netflix includes restarting the device among its troubleshooting steps.
- Isolate the connection path if you can. Netflix recommends bypassing a receiver or sound system for certain connection problems, then checking whether audio works without that part of the chain.
- Try another cable or HDMI input if the connection may be at fault. Netflix recommends trying another cable as a troubleshooting step; that does not mean a replacement cable is automatically needed. Consult the device manuals before buying anything.
Testing another app on the same setup, or Netflix on another device, can help narrow down where the problem occurs. The comparison is a clue, not proof that a particular component is faulty. Netflix’s audio troubleshooting guidance and hardware connection guidance cover these checks.
If Netflix has sound but no 5.1 surround
5.1 depends on the particular title and audio language as well as the playback device and audio equipment. Netflix says not every title or language offers 5.1, and downloaded content does not support the feature.

- Check the title’s details. Look for a 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus indicator. Availability may vary by title, episode, season, and language.
- Check the audio track during playback. If a 5.1 option is available, select it; the default or currently selected language may not offer surround sound.
- Check device and sound-system support. The playback device and equipment in the audio path both need to support 5.1 playback.
- Check the device’s output format. An output restricted to stereo or Linear PCM may prevent 5.1 playback. Choose an output compatible with 5.1 if surround sound is the goal.
Netflix explains the title and device requirements in its 5.1 surround sound help page and its audio options guidance.
If the audio is distorted, static, or hissing
A format mismatch is one possible cause, depending on the equipment path. Netflix’s guidance for static or hissing sound gives a specific example: a Roku connected through an A/V receiver needs a receiver compatible with Dolby Digital Plus to decode and play 5.1. If the receiver does not support Dolby Digital Plus, Netflix suggests selecting stereo. That example is specific to the stated device path; it is not a universal soundbar setting. See Netflix’s static or hissing sound guidance.

When the basic checks do not fix it
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact TV, soundbar, streaming device, or receiver in your setup. The correct settings and connection path vary by model; there is no single HDMI ARC or eARC instruction established for every system. When contacting support, identify where Netflix runs and whether its audio goes directly to the soundbar or passes through the TV or receiver. Also describe whether the problem is no sound, missing surround sound, or distortion.
