If your Google Home speaker or display will not connect to your phone, first identify what is failing: the Home app may not find the device, setup may fail after discovery, or a previously configured speaker may be offline from Wi-Fi. Those problems have different fixes. Start with power, setup mode, phone settings and the network before considering a factory reset.
Identify what “not connecting” means
Check which description matches what you see. Google’s speaker and display connection guidance covers device discovery, while separate instructions address setup and pairing and Wi-Fi problems.
- The speaker is missing in Google Home during setup: troubleshoot power, setup mode, discovery and the phone’s connection to the device.
- The app sees it but setup fails: check phone permissions, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular data and the Wi-Fi password.
- A speaker that used to work is offline: investigate whether the Wi-Fi name, password, router or internet provider changed.
- The speaker still answers voice commands: Google says this indicates it is connected to Wi-Fi. The remaining problem may be app discovery, control or local-network access from the phone.
Try these phone and app checks first
Use the latest Google Home app and a supported phone or tablet. Google’s current setup guidance lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later. Separately, its pairing instructions say to allow Local Network access on iOS 14 or later. The permission applies to those iOS versions even though the current setup-device minimum is newer.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to use.
- Turn on Bluetooth, but disconnect other Bluetooth devices while pairing.
- Turn off cellular data during setup.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and allow Local Network access for Google Home if the option is available.
- Force-close Google Home and reopen it. If the device still does not appear, restart the phone and try again.
- If available, try setup from another supported phone or tablet. This can help distinguish a phone-specific problem from a speaker or network problem.
Google lists these phone, Bluetooth and permission checks in its pairing troubleshooting steps.

If Google Home cannot find the speaker
Check power and setup mode
Plug the speaker directly into power and make sure it is ready for setup. Power-cycle it, toggle Wi-Fi off and back on on the phone, then force-close and reopen Google Home. Keep the phone near the speaker while trying again. Google recommends a distance of 15–20 feet (4–6 m) or less when connecting the phone to the speaker’s temporary setup network.
Try the speaker’s temporary Wi-Fi network
Open the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and look for a network named GoogleHomeXXXX. A speaker that was configured before but has lost Wi-Fi may instead appear under its assigned device name. If you find the speaker’s network, connect to it, return to Google Home and continue setup. Google describes this manual discovery approach in its instructions for a speaker missing from the app.

If the speaker appears but setup fails
Confirm the phone and speaker are using the intended Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth is on, other Bluetooth devices are disconnected, cellular data is off, and the phone has the necessary permission. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully; it is case-sensitive. Then restart the phone, speaker and router before retrying setup.
If setup still fails, try another supported phone or tablet. If the second device works, focus on the original phone’s app, permissions or connectivity. If neither works, continue with the home-network checks below rather than assuming the speaker is defective.

If a previously working speaker is offline
A changed Wi-Fi name or password, a replacement router or a new internet provider can leave the speaker unable to use its saved network. Follow Google’s Wi-Fi change instructions: remove the saved network for the speaker in Google Home and set it up again on the new Wi-Fi. If the app cannot change the network settings, or forgetting the network produces a “could not communicate” error, Google’s instructions may require a reset for that situation.

See whether other devices can connect
Try another phone, computer or household device on the same Wi-Fi. If none can connect, restart the router. If service still does not return, check for an internet-provider outage or a recent network-setting change. During speaker setup, Google recommends placing the speaker about 15–20 feet (4–6 m) from the router. Retry after restarting the router and speaker and reopening Google Home. If the router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try each band.

Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic test
Temporarily try setting up the speaker on a phone hotspot. If it connects to the hotspot but not to the home Wi-Fi, the result indicates that the speaker can connect to Wi-Fi but is having trouble with that home network. Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the network provider in this case. A successful hotspot test does not guarantee that the home network is supported, and it does not by itself show that the speaker is broken.

A factory reset erases device data and cannot be undone. Do it only after trying the ordinary phone, discovery and network checks, or when Google’s Wi-Fi-change instructions specifically call for it. Reset steps vary by model, so use the instructions for your exact speaker or display rather than relying on a generic button sequence.
