Most Claude Code problems on Windows that look like encoding or path failures should be checked against the execution environment first. Anthropic documents two Windows routes: run Claude Code in WSL, or use native Windows with Git Bash. Confirm which shell and Node/npm installation Claude Code is actually using, then verify that paths and any MCP launch commands match that environment. Anthropic’s retrieved documentation does not identify a specific Windows text-encoding or Unicode-filename defect or a Claude Code-specific code-page fix.
Choose the Windows route Claude Code is running under
Anthropic documents Windows 10 and later with either WSL 1 or WSL 2, or native Windows with Git for Windows and Git Bash. The setup guide says, “Both WSL 1 and WSL 2 are supported.” See Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guide for current installation steps.
| Route | What to verify | Path and launch questions |
|---|---|---|
| WSL | Claude Code should use Linux-side tools and runtimes. Check that npm and Node resolve to Linux installations. | Use paths meaningful to the WSL process, and check whether a Windows path is being accessed through a WSL mount such as /mnt/c/. |
| Native Windows with Git Bash | Git for Windows is required. If Git is portable, set the Git Bash executable path. | Check that the path is valid in the native Windows/Git Bash context and that the intended bash.exe is selected. |
These are distinct execution contexts, so a path or executable that works in one should not be assumed to work unchanged in the other.
Configure Git Bash when using portable Git
Anthropic documents CLAUDE_CODE_GIT_BASH_PATH for pointing Claude Code to bash.exe when Git is installed portably. In PowerShell, the documented example is:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
$env:CLAUDE_CODE_GIT_BASH_PATH="C:Program FilesGitbinbash.exe"
This sets the variable for the shown PowerShell session. Use the actual location of bash.exe on your computer; the example path is not universal.
In WSL, make sure Linux Node and npm are selected
A WSL shell can encounter Windows installations of npm or Node exposed under /mnt/c/. Anthropic’s WSL troubleshooting page describes setup failures involving Windows npm and a node: not found launch error when WSL selects Windows Node. Check the resolved executables from the WSL shell:

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
which npm
which node
The documented expected paths begin with /usr/, rather than /mnt/c/. If the commands resolve to Windows paths, install and use a Linux-side Node runtime through your distribution’s package manager or nvm. The WSL diagnostic appears in Anthropic’s Russian-language troubleshooting page; for installation instructions, consult the current setup guide rather than relying on potentially older commands from that page.
Check additional directory paths in the right environment
Claude Code’s --add-dir option accepts additional working directories and validates that each path exists as a directory. Anthropic documents the option in its CLI reference.

- LIGHTWEIGHT & SILENT OPERATION: Slim and portable for effortless travel or commuting. Features a 1MP HD webcam for remote meetings, 38Wh battery with 45W Type-C fast charging, and a fanless silent design for peaceful work environments.
- Check spelling and quoting, especially if the path contains spaces.
- Confirm that the target exists and is a directory, not a file.
- Check which shell and operating environment launched Claude Code. A Windows drive-letter path, a WSL mount path such as
/mnt/c/, and a Git Bash path are not automatically interchangeable.
If validation fails, first correct the path for the environment running Claude Code. The documentation establishes the directory-existence check; the environment-specific path advice is a troubleshooting inference from the separately documented Windows routes.
Wrap local Windows MCP commands that use npx
For a local MCP server launched with npx on native Windows, Anthropic’s MCP guide gives this command pattern:

claude mcp add my-server -- cmd /c npx -y @some/package
The guide says Windows cannot directly execute npx in this context and describes a “Connection closed” error when the wrapper is omitted. See Anthropic’s MCP guide. The cited page is in Indonesian, so check the current guide for applicable details if the command does not match your Claude Code version or setup.
Separate garbled display from a failed file lookup
The official pages cited here do not specify a Claude Code Windows defect involving Windows-1252, UTF-8, a byte-order mark (BOM), console code pages, or filenames containing non-ASCII characters. They also do not document a Claude Code-specific encoding remedy. That boundary does not prove no such bug exists; it means a code-page change cannot be presented as an established fix from these sources.
If text looks corrupted or Claude Code cannot address a file with a non-ASCII name, record enough detail to distinguish a display problem from a path-resolution failure:
- Claude Code version and the shell in which it is running.
- The exact path spelling and whether the process is running in WSL or native Windows.
- The file’s encoding and a minimal example that reproduces the problem.
- Whether the file can be found and read despite the displayed text looking wrong.
A garbled display and a failed filesystem lookup are different symptoms; documenting which one occurs helps avoid applying an unrelated workaround. Do not change registry settings or global code pages as a presumed Claude Code fix without a verified cause.
