If your Bluetooth earphones are not working, first identify whether they will not pair, connect without playing audio, cut out, or fail to charge. Charge them, test close to your phone or computer, and check whether the problem follows the earphones or stays with the source device. The right fix depends on the symptom; pairing and reset controls vary by model.
Start with these quick checks
- Charge the earbuds and case according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A low battery can prevent some headphones from entering or staying in pairing mode.
- Move the earphones close to the phone or computer and reduce obstructions. Nearby interference can disrupt a Bluetooth connection.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on at the source device, then check whether the earphones are connected and selected for audio.
- Try the earphones with another phone or computer, then try another Bluetooth audio device with the original source. This helps determine whether the issue follows the earphones or the source.
For model-specific pairing gestures, cleaning, charging requirements, and reset steps, follow the earphone maker’s instructions. Controls differ across products, including between generations of the same product line.
Why won’t my Bluetooth earphones pair?
To pair, earphones must be discoverable or in pairing mode. The exact control sequence varies by model, so use its official instructions rather than guessing at a button combination. Google’s Android pairing instructions and Samsung’s Bluetooth connection guide describe the general process and model-dependent controls.

- Turn Bluetooth off and on at the phone or computer.
- Put the earphones into pairing mode, keep them near the source, and refresh the available-device list.
- If they are already saved but will not reconnect, remove or forget them from the source device, then pair them again.
- Restart both devices. If pairing still fails, check for relevant system updates and consult the earphone maker’s instructions before attempting a reset.
On Android, menu names and steps can differ by version and manufacturer. Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth connection guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not apply a pairing or reset sequence from a different earphone model.

Why are my earphones connected but there is no sound?
A connected status does not guarantee that media audio is routed to the earphones. Raise the volume on both the source and the earphones, then confirm the earphones are the selected audio output.
On Android
Open the saved Bluetooth accessory’s settings and check that Media audio is enabled. Also check whether another paired device is playing the audio. Android menu labels vary, so consult the phone maker’s instructions if the setting is not where expected. See Google’s Android Bluetooth help.

On Windows
Choose the Bluetooth earphones as the sound output in Windows. If available, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter through Get Help. If the problem began after an operating-system upgrade or update, Microsoft advises checking driver compatibility and trying to unpair and pair the device again. Follow the Windows guide for Bluetooth connected but no sound.
Check whether streaming is the problem
Play an audio file stored on the source device while sitting near it. If local audio works but streamed audio cuts out, the symptom may involve the stream or network rather than the Bluetooth connection. Apple recommends this local-audio test in its wireless audio guidance.

Why does Bluetooth audio cut out or sound distorted?
Check distance and interference
Move closer to the source and reduce obstructions between it and the earphones. Samsung advises reducing nearby interference, including moving away from Wi-Fi routers and running microwaves, and maintaining a clear signal path. Compare the result with local audio stored on the source, as streaming can introduce a separate interruption. See Samsung’s earbud connection guidance and Apple’s wireless audio guidance.
Cross-test the devices
Try the earphones with a second phone or computer, then try different Bluetooth headphones with the original source. If the fault follows the earphones, they are the likely source of the problem; if multiple audio devices fail with one phone or computer, investigate that source instead. A consistent failure on one earbud is useful evidence, but it does not by itself identify a failed component.

Inspect for debris or damage
Check the speaker openings and earpieces for visible debris or damage. Accumulated dirt or earwax can muffle sound, according to Samsung’s Galaxy audio troubleshooting guide. Clean only as the manufacturer directs; avoid tools or liquids that could damage the earphones.
Why won’t one or both earbuds charge or power on?
- Make sure each earbud sits correctly in its case.
- Check the charging contacts on the earbuds and case for debris, and clean them only according to the product’s care instructions.
- Charge the case and earbuds using a cable and power adapter appropriate for that model. Connector and power requirements are not universal.
- Confirm that both earbuds show signs of charging before trying to pair again. Apple’s AirPods connection guidance likewise recommends checking that both earbuds are in the case and charging.
If one earbud repeatedly fails to charge while the other works, try the maker’s model-specific guidance and contact support if the issue persists.

How to tell whether the earphones or the phone are at fault
- The problem follows the earphones: The same symptom occurs with another phone or computer. Check the earphones’ charging, condition, and model-specific software or service guidance.
- The problem stays with the source: Multiple Bluetooth audio devices fail with one phone or computer. Check that source’s audio output, Bluetooth settings, system updates, and—on Windows—driver compatibility.
- They pair but do not play media: Focus on volume, selected output, Android’s Media audio setting, and whether another paired device is taking playback.
- Only streaming fails: Compare with an audio file stored locally on the source, played nearby.
- Only one earbud fails: Check fit in the case, charging contacts, and visible debris; repeat the cross-test before concluding that hardware has failed.
When should you stop troubleshooting?
If charging, restarting, forgetting and re-pairing, cross-device tests, and the manufacturer’s software or reset guidance do not resolve the fault, contact the earphone maker or an authorized service provider. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for a factory reset; do not assume a reset sequence from another model applies. Samsung directs users to service when one or both earbuds continue to have pairing problems despite its recommended steps.
