Reconnect the Ethernet cable firmly at both ends, check that it is plugged into the right ports, and inspect the plugs and sockets for damage or blockage. If the warning remains, test with a known-working cable and an appropriate alternate port. If Ethernet connects but the internet still does not work, troubleshoot the router, modem, or ISP separately.
1. Reseat the cable and check the connection
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer and the router, switch, or modem, then reconnect both ends until each plug is fully seated. If you use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, check the adapter’s connection to the computer as well.
Look inside the ports for anything blocking the connection, and inspect the cable ends for damage. A broken plug latch can stop a connector from staying in place. ASUS lists loose connections, obstructed sockets, and a broken latch among causes of a Windows “Network cable unplugged” status: ASUS wired-network troubleshooting.
2. Make sure the cable is in the right ports
For a typical home setup, connect the computer to one of the router’s LAN Ethernet ports. The router’s WAN or Internet port is generally used for the connection from the modem to the router. Check the labels on your equipment: port layouts and names can vary.

If the router reports “WAN Port Unplugged,” check the modem-to-router cable and confirm that it is seated at both ends. Microsoft also cautions Windows users not to confuse a router’s device-facing Ethernet port with the Internet port used to connect a modem and router. 3. Test the cable, then an appropriate port
Try a known-working Ethernet cable in place of the one showing the warning. Confirm that it has an RJ45 connector, not a smaller RJ11 telephone connector. If the known-working cable restores the link, the original cable is likely faulty. If you need a replacement, TP-Link recommends Cat5e or higher.

If a known-working cable does not help, try another suitable port to check whether a particular port is failing. Keep the original setup in mind: do not move a modem uplink to an arbitrary LAN port unless the equipment maker’s instructions call for that test. An “unplugged” warning points first to a local link problem. If the computer now detects Ethernet but websites or services remain unreachable, the cable may be connected while the problem lies with the router, modem, or ISP.

Where your setup and ISP allow it, test the modem directly with a computer using the ISP’s instructions. If the connection still fails directly, the modem or ISP may be responsible. TP-Link describes modem testing as one way to separate router trouble from an upstream connection problem: TP-Link’s WAN and internet troubleshooting.
5. Troubleshoot the computer and network equipment
On Windows 11
After checking the physical connection, use the network troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as recommended by Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting steps. If the cable and appropriate ports check out but the computer still reports no link, the Ethernet adapter or a device port may need attention.

Restart the modem or router if appropriate
A restart may renew the connection to your ISP, but it temporarily disconnects everyone using the network. Follow the equipment maker’s or ISP’s restart instructions, then wait for the status lights to settle before testing again. Indicator meanings differ by model.
When to contact support
If a known-working cable and appropriate ports still do not establish a link, the fault may be with the computer’s Ethernet adapter, a router port, or other equipment. Use the substitution results to decide whom to contact: ask the device or router manufacturer about local hardware, and contact your ISP if the modem or service appears to be the problem. Avoid a factory reset as an early response to an unplugged-cable message; it can erase custom network settings.
