If a webpage looks right on screen but its PDF does not, start by checking the print styles and page settings—not by assuming the export tool is broken. Browsers can render a separate print version and paginate it across paper-sized pages. A renderer bug or configuration problem is still possible, so use the steps below to isolate the cause.
Why a PDF can differ from the page on screen
A browser-generated PDF is often a paginated rendering of a web document, not a screenshot of its screen presentation. Print-specific CSS can hide, restyle, or reposition content; the browser then fragments the document into pages. The result can therefore differ in layout, page breaks, margins, or color even when the screen view looks correct.
MDN explains that print media styles apply when a page is printed on paper or as a PDF. They can be supplied by a stylesheet linked with media="print" or by rules inside @media print. Those rules still participate in the normal cascade: specificity and rule order can cause one print declaration to override another. See MDN’s printing guide.
Identify how the PDF is generated
First record the rendering path. A user printing through a browser dialog, a page calling window.print(), and an automated PDF export are not interchangeable cases. Note the browser and version, operating system, automation library and version if applicable, page URL or local content state, and whether automation runs headed or headless.

For one documented automation case, Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() uses print media by default. Its documentation shows that calling page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF requests screen media instead. Do not assume this default applies to other exporters. Check the Puppeteer PDF API documentation for the installed version and its available options.
Inspect the print cascade
- Find print-specific rules. Search linked stylesheets for
media="print"and CSS for@media print. Look for declarations that hide elements, alter widths, change positioning, or override screen styles. - Check which declaration wins. Compare specificity and source order where rules conflict; a print rule may be overridden by a later or more specific declaration.
- Preview the print rendering. Use the browser’s print preview or print-media emulation to see whether the changed layout appears before the PDF is created. This helps separate a media-cascade issue from a later export or save step.
Keep screen and print styles intentional: a navigation bar useful on screen may not belong in a document, while a screen layout built from fixed-width columns may need different rules for paper.

Set the page size, orientation, and margins
CSS paged media divides content into pages. The @page rule controls page dimensions, orientation, and margins; the print interface can also let a user select paper size, scale, and margins. Check both sides of that setup, because the final printable area depends on the page box and the chosen print settings. MDN describes the @page rule and its support.

Trace cut-off content and unexpected page breaks
Pagination fragments content to fit successive pages. CSS fragmentation rules influence breaks inside and between elements, so inspect break-related declarations when a section starts on an unexpected page or is split awkwardly. The MDN fragmentation guide explains the page-fragmentation model.
- Check page-break and
break-*rules for elements that should start a new page or stay together. - Inspect long content and fixed-height containers that may not adapt to a page-sized layout.
- Look for overflow-constrained regions if content appears clipped rather than continuing onto another page.
These are diagnostic places to look, not a guarantee that any one property caused the defect. Test a small change at a time and regenerate the PDF to see whether the page boundary or clipping changes.

Separate browser headers and footers from document content
Browser print settings can add headers and footers around a printed page when there is room. If a PDF has an unexpected URL, date, title, or extra space at the edge, check the print dialog’s headers-and-footers option and disable it for a comparison. Page margins also affect the available area; Chrome’s guidance discusses print margins and margin boxes.

Treat color differences as a separate problem
If sizing and pagination are correct but colors differ, check whether the browser is adjusting colors for print and whether background graphics or colors are included in the print settings. Puppeteer documents that PDF colors are modified for printing by default and points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact color reproduction is needed. Consult its PDF documentation for the version in use.
Color adjustment does not explain content being clipped or placed on the wrong page. Diagnose color only when the discrepancy is actually about color.
Reproduce the result in the target browser
Support varies by feature and browser. MDN labels @page Baseline 2024, while noting that some parts vary and older browsers may not support them. Confirm the behavior in the exact browsers and versions you need to support rather than extrapolating Chrome behavior to every engine.
For each reproduction, keep a short record of the browser and version, operating system, paper size, orientation, scale, margins, header/footer setting, background-color setting, and automation options. For Puppeteer, also record its version. This gives you a consistent basis for comparing output and distinguishing a CSS issue from a renderer-specific difference or configuration problem.
