The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt and North American P-51D Mustang have published service ceilings of 42,000 and 41,900 feet, respectively. Those specifications make them two notable high-flying WWII combat aircraft, but they do not establish a definitive top five: a service ceiling is a performance specification, not proof that an aircraft routinely fought at that altitude or set an operational record.

What “highest-flying” means here

This comparison uses published service ceilings, not confirmed combat altitudes or record flights. A service ceiling describes an aircraft’s specified ability to climb under defined performance conditions; it should not be read as the height at which its pilots usually fought. The available museum specifications support two aircraft, but do not provide comparable figures for five types. Naming three more or numbering five as a ranking would therefore imply evidence that is not established.

Two documented high-ceiling WWII combat aircraft

Aircraft and variant Published service ceiling What the figure and wartime role establish
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt 42,000 feet, as listed by the National Museum of the United States Air Force; page publication date not stated, accessed 2026. The museum describes the Thunderbolt as serving in multiple WWII theaters. Conceived initially as an interceptor, it was used both as a high-altitude escort fighter and a low-level fighter-bomber. The specification is for the P-47D, not every P-47 variant. National Museum of the United States Air Force
North American P-51D Mustang 41,900 feet, as listed by The Museum of Flight; page publication date not stated, accessed 2026. The P-51D combined long range with high-altitude escort duties. The National WWII Museum explains that early Allison-powered Mustangs had limited high-altitude performance and that the Merlin-engine conversion improved it. The museum describes later European bomber escort and Pacific B-29 escort missions from Iwo Jima. The Museum of Flight; The National WWII Museum

Why the numbers do not tell the whole story

Variant matters

The figures above belong to specified variants: the P-47D and P-51D. They should not be generalized to every aircraft in either family. A reliable five-aircraft comparison would need a sourced variant and a comparable service-ceiling figure for each entry.

Design and mission matter

The Mustang’s Merlin conversion improved its high-altitude performance, supporting its role as a long-range escort fighter. The P-47’s service included both high-altitude escort and low-level fighter-bomber work, so its published ceiling does not mean every mission was flown near that limit. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum also summarizes the P-51’s wartime roles as long-range, high-altitude escort, strafing, and photo reconnaissance. Can these be called the five highest-flying aircraft of WWII?

Not on the evidence available here. The two cited specifications are useful points of comparison, but they do not show that these were the top two across all WWII combat aircraft, and they cannot support a ranked list of five. A defensible top-five ranking would require consistent, variant-specific service-ceiling sources for additional aircraft, while separating operational combat aircraft from prototypes and distinguishing service ceilings from test or combat altitudes.
