Five of Jeanie Buss’s siblings formally opposed her effort to block the sale of the Buss Family Trust’s remaining Lakers stake, filing their response on October 7, 2026. What the siblings filed—and what it does not decide
Jimmy, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss filed an opposition to Jeanie Buss’s petition concerning the proposed sale of the trust’s Lakers interest. The Los Angeles Times reported that the siblings said discussions were continuing, while their focus was to facilitate the transaction and treat beneficiaries equally. Their collective statement said they wanted to ensure “that all beneficiaries, including Jeanie, are treated equally.”
The filing is a procedural step in an active dispute, not a court decision that the sale is authorized or that Jeanie can stop it. The siblings called her petition “legally and factually baseless”; that is their characterization, not a judicial finding.
Why Jeanie Buss is trying to stop the sale
Jeanie’s petition argues that the trust’s terms and a 2017 court order require the co-trustees to take reasonably available steps to keep her in her position as the Lakers’ controlling governor. She says the siblings’ vote to sell is invalid and conflicts with those obligations. Her reported requests include invalidating the vote, removing Janie and Joey as co-trustees, and seeking contempt-related relief. Why the five siblings say the sale should proceed
The siblings argue that the trust’s voting provisions allow their vote to authorize the sale. They say the transaction should go forward and that Jeanie’s attempt to block it places her personal interest ahead of the other beneficiaries’ interests. Their position, as described in NBC Sports’ account, remains disputed and has not been adopted by a court.
Could Jeanie lose her Lakers governor role?
According to the Los Angeles Times, NBA governors must own at least 15% of a franchise. The Buss Family Trust’s remaining interest is reported at 17.82%; if the trust sells that entire stake, Jeanie would fall below the reported ownership threshold and be ineligible to serve as governor. The threshold explains why the sale matters to her role, but it does not decide whether the trust’s rules permit the sale over her objection.

How the dispute relates to the broader Lakers transaction
The trust’s reported 17.82% interest is part of a broader proposed transaction involving Lakers controlling owner Mark Walter and a group led by Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger. The Associated Press reported the transaction at a $12.5 billion valuation and said NBA board of governors approval was still required. The deal should therefore be described as proposed or pending approval, unless later reporting confirms it has closed.
At that reported valuation, the Los Angeles Times estimated that the trust’s 17.82% stake would represent approximately $2.2 billion. That is an arithmetic valuation estimate, not necessarily the agreed price the family would receive for its stake.

What happens next
The petition was reported to have a November 5 hearing date. The court’s current calendar and any subsequent ruling should be checked against current reporting; the accounts available as of October 9 do not establish a decision on the merits. The Los Angeles Times reported the hearing date.
The central legal question is how the court will interpret the trust’s voting provisions alongside the 2017 order: specifically, whether the siblings’ vote can authorize the sale despite Jeanie’s objection. Separately, the broader transaction still faces the NBA approval reported by the Associated Press. Neither issue is resolved by the siblings’ opposition filing.
