Yes. Fitbit counts the steps you take while climbing stairs as steps. Floors climbed are a separate metric, available only on devices with floor counting: Fitbit estimates them from elevation gain, using a threshold of about 10 feet (3 meters) per floor.
How Fitbit counts stair steps and floors
Fitbit uses a 3-axis accelerometer to detect movement patterns and count steps. That step total can include your steps while walking up or down stairs. Devices with floor counting use an altimeter to detect elevation gain; Fitbit combines barometric-pressure changes with steps to estimate floors climbed. Google Health Help Center explains how Fitbit calculates daily activity.
These measurements answer different questions: steps track detected movement, while floors climbed estimate ascent. Fitbit registers about one floor for roughly 10 feet (3 meters) of climbing. That is an approximate sensor threshold, not a guarantee that each flight or story in a building will equal one Fitbit floor.
What happens when you go up, down, or use exercise equipment?
- Going upstairs: Your steps can add to the step total. If your device supports floor counting, sufficient elevation gain may also add a floor.
- Going downstairs: Your steps can still count, but descending does not add floors climbed.
- Using a StairMaster or treadmill: Fitbit does not count floors climbed on stationary equipment, even when the exercise feels like climbing.
Fitbit’s floor-counting guidance describes these limits in its daily activity calculation help page.

Why the step or floor total may not match your expectations
Step counts depend partly on movement
A wrist-based tracker interprets movement, so arm motion that differs from your body’s walking motion can affect the reading. Fitbit says pushing a stroller or shopping cart may result in a slightly lower count. After walking begins, the display can take about 10–15 continuous steps to catch up; this is general guidance, not a stair-specific accuracy measurement. Fitbit’s accuracy guidance covers these limitations.
Floor counts depend on elevation and pressure
Because floor estimates use barometric pressure, changes in weather or wind, or opening a door, can occasionally affect the count. A long staircase may also produce a Fitbit floor total that differs from the building’s conventional floor count if the ascent does not align with the device’s approximate 10-foot threshold.

How to interpret your Fitbit stair activity
- Use steps to understand how much walking movement Fitbit detected, including stair walking.
- Use floors climbed as an estimate of qualifying upward elevation—not as an exact count of building stories or stair flights.
- Do not expect descending stairs or stationary stair-machine workouts to increase floors climbed.
- If a total seems off, consider wrist movement and environmental pressure changes before treating one reading as definitive.
Fitbit’s cited guidance does not establish a numeric error rate for stair-step counts across models, so the exact accuracy of a particular device on stairs cannot be quantified from these sources.
