Choose the app that matches your devices. If you use a Fitbit tracker or Google Pixel Watch, the relevant app is now Google Health—the Fitbit app became Google Health on May 19, 2026. If you want a general activity app for a Wear OS watch, Health Connect on Android, or Apple Health on iPhone, Google Fit may be the better fit.

Neither app can be called universally more accurate or better: the available Google documentation describes features and compatibility, not an independent head-to-head accuracy test. Your phone, watch, required metrics and preferred data connections should determine the choice.

The naming change that affects this comparison

“Fitbit app” is no longer the name of a separate, unchanged product. Google states that, starting May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app became the Google Health app. People who used a legacy Fitbit account had to move that account to a Google Account to continue using the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means a current comparison is really between Google Health (the successor to the Fitbit app) and Google Fit. Existing Fitbit and Pixel Watch owners should look first at Google Health. People without Fitbit hardware, or those who want an activity hub built around Wear OS, Health Connect or Apple Health, should evaluate Google Fit.

The two apps can coexist, but they are not interchangeable dashboards. A connected device or service decides which measurements it sends, and an app may not use every received metric for every feature.

Quick decision: which app fits your setup?

Your situation Starting point Why
You own a Fitbit tracker Google Health It is the current Fitbit app experience and is designed for Fitbit data.
You own a Google Pixel Watch Google Health Google Health supports Pixel Watch data and the associated Fitbit tracking experience.
You own another Wear OS watch Google Fit Google Fit documents watch-based tracking for steps, calories, heart rate and workouts.
You want Android apps to exchange health data Google Fit with Health Connect, or Google Health with Health Connect Health Connect provides the Android data bridge; the available metrics depend on each app and device.
You use an iPhone and Apple Watch or other Apple Health sources Google Fit or Google Health, depending on your device Both document connections with Apple Health on iPhone; Fitbit or Pixel Watch ownership points to Google Health.
You want a basic activity log without a wearable Either app A wearable is optional for basic activity tracking. Your phone and connected services determine what can be recorded.

This is an ecosystem decision, not a performance ranking. Google’s published materials do not establish that one app measures steps, calories, heart rate or workouts more accurately than the other.

What Google Health provides after the Fitbit transition

Fitbit and Pixel Watch data in one current app

Google Health is the successor app for Fitbit devices and Google Pixel Watch models. Google’s device documentation lists Fitbit products such as the Fitbit Charge 6 and Pixel Watch models as sources of data for Google Account users. These devices are optional collectors; you do not need to buy one to install or use the app for basic activity information.

Google Account requirement

Continued use after the Fitbit app change requires a Google Account. If your data still resides under a legacy Fitbit account, follow Google’s account-migration process before relying on the app for ongoing history. Migration is an account change, not merely an app update.

Third-party connections, with limits

Google says the Google Health app can link data from many health and fitness apps and devices. On Android, those links can use Health Connect; on iPhone, they can use Apple Health. Some partners also offer direct connections. The exact data available depends on what a partner shares, and Google notes that third-party metrics are not necessarily used by every Google Health feature.

What Google Fit tracks and connects

Wear OS watch tracking

Google Fit’s watch documentation says a Wear OS watch can track “steps taken, calories burned, heart rate, and workouts.” A compatible watch can therefore supply measurements that a phone alone may not capture continuously or conveniently.

Phone and connected-app data

Google Fit can combine its own activity information with data from connected apps. On Android, Health Connect is the central bridge for supported health data. On iPhone, Google Fit can connect with Apple Health. The result is useful only for the categories that each source actually shares; a connection does not guarantee that every field from a device appears in Google Fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activity goals are not comparison evidence

Google Fit help pages refer to common American Heart Association activity guidance, including 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Those recommendations are health guidance, not a measurement of Google Fit’s accuracy or an advantage over Google Health.

Compatibility by phone, watch and data bridge

Google Pixel Watch Not the primary Pixel Watch/Fitbit experience described by the current materials. Supported. Available data and features still depend on the watch model and account setup.

Health Connect on Android Supported. Supported. Health Connect controls sharing; it does not make unsupported metrics appear.
Apple Health on iPhone Supported. Supported. Apple Health permissions determine what each app can read or write.

Which metrics will actually appear?

Do not choose solely from a device’s feature list. A metric can pass through several filters: the sensor records it, the device’s companion service exports it, Health Connect or Apple Health grants access, and the destination app decides whether it displays or uses it.

  • Steps: Google Fit documents steps from a Wear OS watch and can also receive compatible connected-app data.
  • Calories: Google Fit’s Wear OS documentation includes calories burned; the source and calculation method still matter.
  • Heart rate: A watch may provide heart-rate readings, but the destination app may show only the fields it supports.
  • Workouts: Google Fit documents workout tracking with Wear OS. Other devices may export workouts through a partner connection.
  • Fitbit-specific measurements: Google Health is the logical destination for Fitbit data, but Google cautions that partner-provided metrics vary and are not used by every feature.

Before switching, write down the few measurements you actually depend on—for example, daily steps, resting heart rate, sleep, cycling workouts or weight—then verify that your watch or service shares each one with the app you plan to use. The published materials do not provide a universal metric-by-metric compatibility matrix.

How to set up Google Fit with Health Connect on Android

Menu names can change between Android releases and app versions, but the setup follows this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or update Google Fit from Google Play and sign in with the Google Account you intend to keep using.
  2. Open Google Fit’s connected-app or Health Connect settings. Choose the option to connect Health Connect when it is offered.
  3. Review the permission categories. Health Connect presents the data types Google Fit is requesting. Allow only the categories you want Fit to read or write.
  4. Connect your watch or another source. Pair the Wear OS watch through its normal phone setup, then confirm that it is listed as a data source.
  5. Check a known measurement. After the watch records an activity, open Google Fit and confirm that the entry appears. Synchronization may not be instantaneous.
  6. Resolve duplicate sources. If both your phone and watch record steps, review source priorities or permissions in Health Connect so you understand which entries are being shared.

Health Connect is a permission and exchange layer, not a guarantee that every app will display identical totals. Google also says Google Fit keeps a copy of Health Connect data that it accesses, so disconnecting a source does not mean every previously imported record is immediately erased.

How to connect Google Fit or Google Health with Apple Health on iPhone

  1. Install the Google app you need and sign in. Google Health requires iOS 16.4 or later; check the current App Store listing if your phone is older.
  2. Open the app’s Apple Health connection screen. Grant access to the categories you want to exchange.
  3. Review Apple Health permissions. In the iPhone Health settings, inspect which categories the Google app can read and write. Turn off categories that are not relevant.
  4. Connect the originating device or service. For Fitbit or Pixel Watch data, use Google Health; for a general Apple Health or compatible activity setup, Google Fit may be sufficient.
  5. Verify a recent workout or step entry. Check both Apple Health and the destination app to identify whether the source is writing, reading or both.

Apple Health acts as the bridge in this arrangement. A permission granted to one category does not imply access to all other health categories.

How to move from a legacy Fitbit account

If you still use a pre-transition Fitbit account, migration is required for continued use of the current app experience.

  1. Sign in to the Fitbit app when prompted. Look for the notice about moving to a Google Account.
  2. Choose the Google Account that should own the Fitbit data and future Google Health access.
  3. Review the migration terms and data choices. Confirm that the account and information shown are the ones you intend to continue using.
  4. Complete the move, then update the app. The app may relaunch as Google Health or present the redesigned Google Health experience.
  5. Reconnect devices and partner services if requested. Check that your tracker or watch is still syncing and that Health Connect or Apple Health permissions remain appropriate.

Keep the same Google Account across your phone, Google Health and any connected Google services. Switching accounts later can make history appear missing even when it still belongs to the original account.

Privacy and data-control differences you should understand

Google Fit controls

Google Fit’s connected-app documentation says you can review the types of data an app requests and disconnect that app. Use those controls when an integration asks for more categories than you need. Google says Fit data is stored on its servers and backed up with your Google Account.

Health Connect controls

On Android, Health Connect lets you manage which apps can access which shared data categories. You can inspect permissions and revoke an app’s access. Revoking access prevents future sharing but does not automatically promise deletion of copies already imported by another service.

Google Health connections

Google Health can use Health Connect on Android and Apple Health on iPhone, along with some direct partner connections. Because each partner decides what it shares, privacy and data availability can differ by device and service. Treat Google’s descriptions as product documentation, not as an independent security audit or comparative privacy rating.

A practical permission checklist

  • Grant only the metric categories you need for your chosen goals.
  • Check read and write permissions separately; an app that reads steps may not need permission to write them.
  • Review connected apps after changing phones, watches or Google Accounts.
  • Disconnect old devices and services that you no longer use.
  • Remember that removing access stops new exchange but may not remove historical copies held by the receiving app.

Common problems and how to troubleshoot them

“My Fitbit data is not in Google Fit”

Google Health is the current Fitbit app experience; Google Fit is not automatically a complete mirror of Fitbit history. Confirm that your Fitbit account migration is complete, then check whether the particular Fitbit metric is exported through Health Connect, Apple Health or a supported direct connection. If no supported bridge exposes that metric, it will not appear in Google Fit merely because both apps use a Google Account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Google Fit cannot see my watch”

Confirm that the watch is Wear OS and paired with the correct phone account. Open Health Connect permissions and Google Fit’s connected-app settings, then verify that the watch or its companion app is allowed to share the categories you expect. Record a short walk and wait for synchronization before diagnosing a missing historical entry.

“The totals do not match”

Different sources may count the same activity, apply different timestamps or export different calorie estimates. Review which app is writing data, whether both phone and watch sensors are enabled, and whether duplicate entries are being combined. Matching totals are not guaranteed by a shared bridge.

“A metric is missing from Google Health”

Google says partner-provided metrics vary and that not every metric is available to every Google Health feature. Check the partner’s export permissions and the specific feature you are using. A missing field may be a compatibility limitation rather than a sync failure.

“I lost access after changing accounts”

Sign out and identify the Google Account used during Fitbit migration or the original Google Fit setup. Reconnecting a device under a different account can create a new, empty history. Do not delete the original account until you have confirmed that the data you need is present in the account you plan to keep.

Use-case recommendations

For a Fitbit tracker owner

Use Google Health. It is the successor to the Fitbit app and is designed around Fitbit-device data. Add Health Connect or Apple Health only when you need to exchange selected categories with another service.

  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

For a Pixel Watch owner

Start with Google Health because Google lists Pixel Watch models among supported Fitbit and Pixel Watch data sources. If you also use other Android fitness apps, connect only the categories you need through Health Connect.

For a Wear OS watch owner without Fitbit hardware

Google Fit is the straightforward starting point because its documentation explicitly covers Wear OS tracking for steps, calories, heart rate and workouts. Confirm that your watch model and companion app export the measurements you care about.

For an iPhone user centered on Apple Health

Either app can connect with Apple Health. Choose Google Health if your wearable is a Fitbit or Pixel Watch; choose Google Fit if your main goal is a general activity view fed by Apple Health and compatible services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For someone tracking only phone activity

Try the app that matches your future plans. Both ecosystems can work without buying a wearable for basic activity tracking, but a phone-only setup will not provide the same sensor coverage as a watch or tracker.

What this comparison cannot establish

Official product pages describe supported features, permissions and device connections. They do not provide an independent head-to-head study of step accuracy, calorie accuracy, heart-rate accuracy, battery impact, user satisfaction or privacy protection. They also do not guarantee permanent availability of every third-party integration. Treat compatibility as a point-in-time product feature and recheck it after major app, phone or wearable updates.

The practical conclusion is therefore conditional: Google Health for Fitbit and Pixel Watch ecosystems; Google Fit for general Wear OS, Health Connect or Apple Health activity tracking. Verify the exact metrics and permissions before moving your health history.
