In 2014, researchers reported a 40-atom boron cluster, B40−, whose photoelectron spectrum was interpreted as evidence for an all-boron fullerene-like cage. The experiment measured the negatively charged cluster; calculations helped assign its possible structure. It did not directly image a neutral borospherene molecule.
What the 2014 experiment detected
The team used photoelectron spectroscopy to study B40−, a cluster of 40 boron atoms carrying an extra electron. In this technique, researchers detach electrons from anions and measure their energies. The resulting spectrum provides evidence about the cluster’s electronic states and can be compared with calculations for proposed structures.
The authors described the finding in their abstract as “the observation, by photoelectron spectroscopy, of an all-boron fullerene-like cage cluster at B40(−) with an extremely low electron-binding energy.” The direct observation was the spectrum of the anion; the cage assignment was an interpretation supported by theoretical calculations. The paper appeared online in Nature Chemistry on 13 July 2014.
What structure did the evidence support?
The researchers compared the measured spectrum with calculations for candidate B40− geometries. Their work proposed a fullerene-like cage, but the comparison also showed why charge state and structure must be kept distinct:

- Anionic B40−: Calculations found a quasi-planar isomer with two adjacent hexagonal holes slightly lower in energy than the cage structure.
- Neutral B40: Calculations favored the fullerene-like cage as the most stable structure.
Thus, the experiment did not establish that every B40 cluster forms a cage, nor did it directly demonstrate a neutral, isolated cage molecule. Its importance was that the measured anion’s spectrum, interpreted with calculations, provided the first experimental evidence for an all-boron fullerene-like cage.
How a boron fullerene differs from C60
The proposed boron cage is not simply a carbon C60 fullerene made from a different element. The paper describes a cage surface that is not perfectly smooth and includes unusual heptagonal faces. It also characterizes the bonding as involving delocalized sigma and pi bonds throughout the structure. Those features make borospherene a distinct kind of fullerene-like cluster, rather than a one-for-one geometric copy of the familiar carbon cage. The original paper details the cage and bonding description.

Why the result mattered—and what followed
The report extended fullerene chemistry beyond carbon by identifying a boron cluster with evidence for a cage-like form. In later work, researchers reported an axially chiral B39− cage using photoelectron spectroscopy alongside structural searches and electronic-structure calculations. That study was a subsequent development in boron-cluster research, not a replacement for the 2014 B40− result. The B39− study was published in ACS Nano in 2015. A contemporary review discusses the gas-phase production and detection context for borospherene. National Science Review’s 2015 overview describes a laser-vaporization supersonic source and photoelectron spectroscopy.
