If the reported Nova preference is available in your Firefox build, you can try setting browser.nova.enabled to false in about:config. This is a community-reported, build-dependent workaround—not an officially documented Mozilla switch or a guaranteed way to keep the older interface.

How to try disabling Nova in Firefox

  1. Enter about:config in Firefox’s address bar and press Enter. Proceed through the warning if Firefox displays one.

  2. Search for browser.nova.enabled.

  3. If the preference appears, change its value to false.

  4. Restart Firefox if the interface does not change immediately.

Recent answers in Mozilla Support’s community forum report this preference as a way to turn off Nova, including in discussions referring to Firefox 157. The reports are dated September 29 to October 1, 2026; they do not establish that the preference is available in every build or will remain available. Read the community discussion.

What to do if the preference is missing or does not work

If browser.nova.enabled is absent, or changing it has no effect, stop there. Do not change other preferences just because their names contain “nova.” The community reports do not establish that other similarly named settings control the interface, and Mozilla’s official documentation does not confirm a Nova-specific setting.

Availability and behavior have not been established across Firefox versions, release channels, operating systems, or managed installations. A preference change may also be reset or removed in a later build.

Understand the risks of about:config

Mozilla warns that changing advanced preferences can cause unexpected behavior and does not officially support using the Configuration Editor (about:config) to modify preference settings. Mozilla’s guidance on advanced customization and configuration options applies generally; it does not validate the Nova toggle.

How this differs from other Firefox appearance changes

Method What it changes Support and trade-offs
Reported Nova preference A reported switch for the Nova interface rollout, if the preference exists in your build. Community-reported and potentially build-dependent; not an officially documented Mozilla control.
Built-in themes and customization Colors, themes, and options exposed through Firefox’s normal customization controls. Intended for ordinary appearance changes; does not promise to restore an earlier interface layout.
Custom CSS Styling supplied through profile files such as userChrome.css. Advanced and not officially supported by Mozilla; custom rules can behave unexpectedly or break after changes.

Undo custom CSS separately

If the appearance problem comes from your own profile CSS rather than Nova, Mozilla documents a narrower rollback: set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to false, then remove or rename userChrome.css or userContent.css in the profile’s chrome folder. These steps undo effects from those files; they are not a Nova-specific fix. See Mozilla’s guidance on Firefox configuration files.

Why Refresh Firefox is not the first step

Refresh Firefox is a broader reset, not a targeted Nova rollback. Mozilla says it removes add-ons, extension data, and preference configurations. Avoid using it solely to try to restore the previous interface when the narrower reported preference is available. Mozilla explains the reset and what it removes in its Refresh Firefox support article.
