In Firefox 157.0, Firefox Suggest address-bar suggestions became available for users in 16 European countries. To turn them off, open Settings (or Preferences), choose Search, scroll to Address Bar — Firefox Suggest, and clear the checkboxes for the suggestion categories you do not want.
What changed in Firefox 157
Firefox 157.0 was first offered to Release-channel users on September 29, 2026. Mozilla’s release notes say Firefox Suggest now offers address-bar suggestions in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The release notes document the rollout and point to Firefox Suggest settings. They do not describe a consent prompt or publish a separate measurement of “silent” enablement; that wording reflects how the change may appear to users after an update.

Labels and available categories can vary by country and Firefox version.

What Firefox Suggest can show
Firefox Suggest is built into the address bar. Depending on your version and region, its results can include:
- Browsing history: Pages stored locally on your computer.
- Bookmarks: Matching saved bookmarks.
- Open tabs: Pages currently open in another tab or window.
- Search and contextual suggestions: Suggestions generated as you type.
- Sponsored suggestions: Occasional promotional results identified as sponsored.
Turning off suggestions does not require deleting your browsing history or bookmarks.

Disable Firefox Suggest from Settings
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings. On some systems this is labeled Preferences.
- Select Search in the left sidebar.
- Scroll to Address Bar — Firefox Suggest.
- Clear the checkboxes for the categories you want removed from address-bar results.
The change applies to the selected result types. You can return to the same section later and select a checkbox again.

Choose the right level of control

Turn off only sponsored or specific suggestions
If you want to keep ordinary autocomplete but remove one category, use the corresponding checkbox in Address Bar — Firefox Suggest. The exact labels depend on your region.

Firefox also exposes separate advanced preferences in about:config:
browser.urlbar.suggest.bookmarkcontrols bookmark results.browser.urlbar.suggest.historycontrols history results.browser.urlbar.suggest.openpagecontrols open-tab results.browser.urlbar.suggest.searchescontrols search suggestions in the address bar.browser.urlbar.suggest.quicksuggest.enabledcontrols Firefox Suggest results.browser.urlbar.suggest.quicksuggest.sponsoredcontrols sponsored Firefox Suggest results.
To change one, type about:config in the address bar, accept the warning, search for the preference name, and toggle its value. Use this route only if you understand the setting you are changing; the normal Settings page is safer for most users.

The separate preference browser.search.suggest.enabled is the global search-suggestion control exposed through Search Preferences. It is distinct from deleting history and from the controls for bookmark or open-tab matches.

On an organization-managed installation, an administrator can set the SearchSuggestEnabled policy to false. This hides search suggestions, locks the setting, and affects both the address bar and the separate search bar through browser.urlbar.suggest.searches and browser.search.suggest.enabled.

If the checkbox is unavailable or keeps reverting on a work or school computer, the device may be receiving this policy. Contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing local preferences.

- Your Firefox build may use different wording or expose fewer categories.
- Mozilla notes that some Firefox Suggest components depend on both version and region.
