FireEye announced the NX 10000 in 2013 as a high-performance appliance for inspecting network traffic and blocking web-delivered threats. The company said its Multi-Vector Virtual Execution (MVX) engine could process traffic at up to 4 Gbps, with the appliance designed for Internet egress points.

What was the FireEye NX 10000?

The NX 10000 was an enterprise threat-prevention appliance announced by FireEye on September 4, 2013. FireEye positioned it as a way to scale threat inspection on high-speed, multi-gigabit networks and consolidate protection on a single platform. SecurityWeek reported the announcement and FireEye’s product claims in its September 4, 2013 coverage.

How did the MVX appliance work?

The NX 10000 used FireEye’s Multi-Vector Virtual Execution (MVX) engine. FireEye described the appliance as inspecting traffic to identify web exploits and multi-protocol callbacks, then blocking detected threats. The company promoted inspection of all traffic rather than only a selected portion, but the announcement does not provide independent test results or technical detail sufficient to assess detection performance.

How fast was the NX 10000?

FireEye claimed throughput of up to 4 Gbps. This was a company-provided maximum reported at launch, not an independently verified benchmark in the cited coverage. The announcement also characterized the system as suitable for multi-gigabit, high-speed networks.

Was the NX 10000 a 2U rack-mount appliance?

Yes. FireEye said the NX 10000 used a 2U rack-mount chassis, representing a 50% reduction in appliance size compared with the prior design. The company also claimed a 20% reduction in power consumption. These were FireEye’s launch claims; the cited report does not describe independent measurements or specify the comparison conditions.

Where was it intended to be deployed?

FireEye targeted Internet egress points: the places where an organization’s outbound network traffic reaches the internet. The intended use was to inspect that traffic for web exploits and multi-protocol callbacks and block threats. FireEye described the appliance as a way to scale inspection and consolidate threat protection, with lower total cost of ownership as a company-stated benefit rather than a demonstrated outcome.
