Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave sorts its classes into three tiers: Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced. Nintendo says a unit gains a new class by speaking with a certification exam proctor, and that passing the exam is not guaranteed. The official material published before the game’s September 17, 2026 release does not include a complete class roster, every class ability, or the prerequisites for each exam. This guide explains what Nintendo has confirmed, how to prepare a unit for a class change, and how to weigh the options when you choose one.

What Nintendo has confirmed about the class system

Nintendo’s product page lists the game for Nintendo Switch 2 with a release date of September 17, 2026. Its August 4, 2026 Direct recap and its September 15, 2026 developer interview are the main sources for the class system, and both describe it in general terms. Three points are firm:

  • Classes are grouped into three tiers: Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced.
  • Choosing a class changes a unit’s abilities, the weapons it can use, and its movement range.
  • Characters can learn different things in different classes, and growth rates are visible to the player.

The three class tiers

Nintendo gives representative examples for each tier. The table below lists only what the official material names. Where Nintendo gave no count or detail, the cell says so.

Tier Nintendo’s description Classes Nintendo names as examples Total number of classes
Beginner Foundational classes Gladiator (excels with weapons); Diviner (wields magic); Ornius Rider (increased movement range) Five, per Nintendo’s Direct recap
Specialty Classes with specific abilities Armored Knight; Wing Soldier (can leap obstacles and cover long distances); Charioteer (can attack multiple enemies in a straight line) More than ten, per Nintendo’s Direct recap
Advanced Masters of their skills Cataphract (horse mobility combined with heavy armor); Guardian (skilled with white magic and spears); Elephant Rider Not stated

These are examples, not a verified full list. The developer interview identifies the Ornius Rider as an ostrich-like mount and mentions new Dagda classes based on ancient chariots and elephant riders.

How a unit gets a new class

Nintendo’s Direct recap describes class changes as a certification exam, not an automatic level-up. The steps as described are:

  1. Speak with a certification exam proctor for the unit you want to change.
  2. Check that the unit already has the skills it needs before applying. Nintendo recommends this because success is not guaranteed.
  3. Apply for the exam. If the attempt fails, the unit does not gain the class.

Nintendo does not name the skills required for each class, and it does not publish exam conditions class by class. Any chart that claims to list exact levels, skill ranks, or item costs for every class should be treated as unverified until it is confirmed against in-game information.

Activities that build toward an exam

Nintendo’s recap describes a preparation loop around Heroic Games matches. Each activity below builds a unit’s readiness, but the source does not say that any one of them automatically unlocks a particular class.

  • Arena training: improves skills, teaches moves, and lets units use stronger weapons.
  • Shops and weapon upgrades: buy weapons and tools, or enhance weapons with collected materials.
  • Temples: earn Blessings.
  • Recruitment: add warriors to your roster.
  • Skirmishes outside Dagsion: explore or fight to gather resources.

How to choose a class

Nintendo’s material does not support a universal best class or a tested optimal build. Choose based on the role you need from the unit and these five comparisons:

Rank #3
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes - Switch
  • Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
  • Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
  • Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
  • Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
  • Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy
  1. Role and abilities: match the class’s stated capabilities to the job the unit will do on the battlefield.
  2. Weapons: class determines which weapons a unit can use. Compare that access with the enemies and weapons you plan to handle.
  3. Movement: movement range can change a lot between classes. Obstacle traversal and mobility matter most on maps where reaching a target decides the fight.
  4. Growth rates: Nintendo says these are visible and show which basic stats, such as Strength or Speed, are more likely to rise. Factor those tendencies into your choice.
  5. Experimentation: the developers say characters can learn different skills or spells in different classes. This is a possibility Nintendo describes, not a guarantee for any named character or build, so a less obvious class may be worth trying on a unit whose role is flexible.

Combat systems that affect class decisions

Several combat systems interact with class choice. Nintendo describes them separately, so keep them separate when you plan a unit.

Blaze Arts and Burst

The four Heroes can use signature moves called Blaze Arts, which cost HP. Using them fills a gauge. At the halfway mark the gauge grants a power boost. When the gauge is completely full, it triggers Burst, which ends the bonuses and cuts the Hero’s maximum HP in half. Nintendo’s recap gives three examples: Cai’s wide burst of flames, Dietrich’s cloak that can warp him across the battlefield, and Leda’s music, which buffs allies and summons a powerful monster. These are Hero-specific systems, not ordinary class abilities.

Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • IMMERSIVE STORY AND VISUALS:The deep and immersive fantasy storyline is told throughbeautiful 3D visuals and movies.
  • DEEP CAST OF CHARACTERS: A massive selection of characters are at your command, withal with a unique personality and background story and different class types and skill sets.
  • BONDS GROWN IN BATTLE: Team up characters to strengthen their friendships on the battlefield. The closer they grow, the better these friends and allies will fight together. Some characters can even get married!

Combat Arts

Combat Arts use weapon durability and can offer greater power, longer range, or other advantages. Because they depend on the weapon, they interact with the weapon access that class provides.

Positioning and weapon matchups

Nintendo advises considering attack range, counterattacks, terrain, and the buffs an adjacent ally provides. Its overview describes spears as especially damaging to cavalry, axes as powerful but less accurate, bows as ranged attacks, and magic as effective against heavy armor or useful for healing and support.

Fortuna’s Blessing

According to Nintendo’s recap, you can turn back time to a previous point after a move and rethink a battle decision. This gives you a way to test a class-based plan in a single battle without restarting the chapter.

Optional collector’s edition

Nintendo lists a Dagdan Collection for the game. Its contents are a steelbook case, character art cards, a map of Dagda, and an artbook. This is an optional extra; the class system works the same with the standard edition.
