The figure 311,846 indexed assets appears in the title of an indexed article about MCP tool endpoints, but it is not independently verified by the material available here. The article’s scan date, measurement method, definition of an “asset,” and deduplication rules are not established. Even if the count is accurate on its own terms, “indexed” does not mean exposed, unmanaged, or vulnerable.
What is known about the 311,846 figure?
An indexed listing for a DEV Community article by an author named jeffrey shows the title “Fingerprinting the MCP Ecosystem: 311,846 Indexed Assets and the Problem of Unmanaged Tool Endpoints” and a Sep 21 date. The listing does not establish the year, and the article body is not accessible through the listing. An indexed listing and an alternate indexed listing therefore support only that the headline and date appear in search-indexed material—not that the number represents a verified census or scan result.
Key details remain unconfirmed: what counted as an asset, when and where any scan took place, how MCP endpoints were identified, and whether duplicates were removed. The count could refer to endpoints, hosts, services, or another unit; the available material does not say which. It should be treated as a headline claim, not as a confirmed count of unique MCP endpoints or exposed servers.

Why “indexed” is not the same as “unmanaged” or “vulnerable”
Indexing describes a discovery or cataloging result. By itself, it does not show that an endpoint is reachable by an attacker, lacks authentication, is outside its owner’s oversight, or contains a security flaw. Those are separate questions that require evidence about the endpoint’s ownership, network access, identity controls, and behavior.

For an operator, the useful sequence is to establish what was found, determine who is responsible for it, and then assess its security. An entry in an index can be a lead for inventory work; it is not a security assessment. The indexed article’s accessible listing does not reveal whether its author made these distinctions or how the count was produced.
What MCP security concerns should operators consider?
A separate report, PipeLab’s The State of MCP Security 2026: Incidents, Attack Patterns, and Defense Coverage, published April 12, 2026, surveys MCP security incidents and defense categories. Its overview describes several areas operators may need to assess:
Rank #2
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
- Identity and access: authentication and authorization weaknesses can leave uncertainty about who may use a server or invoke its tools.
- Tool integrity and inputs: tool poisoning and injection are among the risk classes the report discusses.
- Deployment and dependencies: supply-chain compromise and shadow MCP servers can complicate confidence in what is running and who manages it.
- Visibility and context: weak audit coverage and context exposure can make activity or sensitive information harder to control.
These are categories from PipeLab’s report, not findings about the 311,846 figure or the endpoints behind it. The report’s overview does not establish that any particular indexed asset has one of these weaknesses.

How to turn an endpoint lead into an inventory and review
Use a discovered endpoint as a starting point for verification rather than as a verdict. A basic review can proceed in this order:
Rank #3
- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
- Confirm the asset: determine whether the record refers to an endpoint, host, service, or duplicate entry, and whether it is still active.
- Assign ownership: identify the team or person accountable for the deployment and whether it is an approved service.
- Establish reachability and identity controls: determine which networks can reach it and what authentication and authorization protections apply.
- Review tool integrity and behavior: examine tool definitions and changes to them, and assess how inputs and runtime actions are handled.
- Check visibility: verify whether access and relevant activity are recorded and reviewable.
- Decide on disposition: document the risk and owner, then retain, restrict, remediate, or remove the deployment as appropriate.
This sequence separates inventory from assessment: a server can be known and managed yet still need security work, while an unknown service is not automatically exploitable merely because it has been discovered.

PipeLab recommends layered defenses, including network allowlists, gateways, scanning, runtime inspection, authentication, and audit controls. These categories address different parts of the problem: network restrictions and gateways concern access paths; authentication concerns identity; scanning and runtime inspection concern examination of configurations or activity; and audit controls concern records of use.

SANOOV for raspberry pi 5 4GB is equipped with broadcom 64 quad-core Arm Cortex A76 processor with gigabit ethernet and upgraded with IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 dual-band 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and Power Over Ethernet (POE). Upgrading delivers 2-3 x speed vs Pi 4, redefining the experience
- Efficient Active Cooler: Effectively lowers operating temperature and prevents performance throttling. Runs quietly even under long-time heavy load, ensures stable operation all day long. SANOOV RPi 5 4GB kit offer an active cooler, which combines an aluminium heatsink with a high-performance PWM fan. Active cooler is fully compatible with the Pi OS, which can effectively reduce the temperature of RPi5 and ensure its good performance during long-term high load operation
- Sturdy ABS Protective Case: Well-fitted for Raspberry Pi 5 board, can be secured with 4 screws to effectively protect the Pi 5 motherboard from damage, reserves full access to all ports and buttons. SANOOV uses ABS material to produce the case, which has a softer texture and feel. Meanwhile, SANOOV case adopts a layered design for easy disassembly and installation. (Tip: The Case cannot install M.2 HAT Add on Board and Solid State Drive!)
- Wide Application & Full Compatibility: Seamlessly compatible with official OS and mainstream peripheral accessories for Raspberry Pi 5. Whether you are a beginner, student, electronics hobbyist or professional developer, this all-in-one kit meets your diverse needs. It excels in IoT projects, robotics design, retro gaming devices, home media servers and other DIY creations. Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
The report’s categories are not a product-by-product comparison or a benchmark, and they do not show that any one control detects every risk. Operators should choose controls against their actual deployment and review whether inventory, access, behavior, and audit needs are covered rather than treating a discovery count—or a single security product—as proof of safety.
