To see what is using storage on a Samsung tablet, open Settings > Device care > Storage. For a closer look at individual files, open My Files > Analyze storage. These screens show the actual breakdown on your device; Samsung’s “Other” category is a broad group of app-related files, not one item you can simply delete.
How to check what is using storage
- Check the storage breakdown. Open Settings > Device care > Storage and note the used and available space and the categories taking up room. Menu names and locations can vary by tablet model and software.
- Inspect files in My Files. Open My Files and review Downloads, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents, and Internal storage. Use Analyze storage to look for large, duplicate, or unused files. Check each candidate before deleting it.
- Review large apps. Open Settings > Apps, select an app, then tap Storage. Compare its storage use with the files you found and decide whether cache cleanup or removing the app’s own content is appropriate.
What the “Other” category means
Samsung’s UK guidance describes “Other” as app data that does not fit the named storage categories, including system files, cached data, and temporary files. The category cannot be deleted directly, and its size alone does not identify which files are taking up space on your tablet. Some contents may be reduced by clearing an app’s cache or data.
Choose a cleanup method carefully

To clear an app’s cache, use Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Clear cache. The exact labels can differ by software version or app. Treat Clear data as a separate, more consequential choice: it resets the app and may remove saved information. Check that you can sign back in or restore anything important before using it.

If your exact tablet supports removable storage, you can move personal files such as photos, videos, music, and downloads to a microSD card or supported USB storage using My Files. Check the tablet’s model specifications first: not all Galaxy devices support microSD cards, and USB-storage support varies by model.

A microSD card does not merge with internal storage on Samsung Android devices. Samsung states that its Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature. Moving an app to a card is also not guaranteed; some developers do not permit it, and Samsung’s instructions require a Change option on the app’s Storage screen for an app move.
My Files can also show cloud locations such as Samsung Cloud and Google Drive. Backing up or moving files to cloud storage is different from expanding internal app storage. Verify the service and your sync settings before assuming that a cloud copy has freed space on the tablet.

A practical order for reclaiming space
- Use Settings > Device care > Storage to identify the largest categories.
- Open My Files > Analyze storage, inspect large or duplicate candidates, and remove only files you recognize and no longer need.
- Check storage-heavy apps under Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage. Clear cache when temporary files are the target; avoid Clear data unless you are ready for the app reset.
- If supported, move personal media and documents to a microSD card or USB storage. Confirm the files open from their new location before deleting any original copies.
Samsung notes that storage menus and settings vary by device and software. Without the specific tablet model and its Storage screen, no category—including “Other”—can be identified as the largest on an individual device.
