To find a screenshot in Google Photos, search for a distinctive word or phrase visible in it. Put the phrase in quotation marks to look for an exact text match. If that does not surface the image, search for Screenshots or browse the screenshot collection. Ask Photos is another option for conversational searches, but it requires opting in and is not available to every account.
Find a screenshot by searching for its text

Open Google Photos on the web or in the app, then select Search.

Enter a distinctive word or phrase that appears in the screenshot. For an exact text match, put the phrase in quotation marks—for example, search for

If an exact search does not find the screenshot, try a shorter distinctive phrase or remove the quotation marks. An unquoted search may return broader results, not just exact text matches.

Open a result and check the image itself to confirm it contains the detail you need.
Google Photos Help says quotation marks can find exact text matches in photos, as well as matches in filenames, camera models and captions. This searches the library for matching text; it does not, on the basis of the documented behavior, limit results to screenshots alone.

Browse the screenshot collection instead
If you remember the image is a screenshot but not the words in it, search for Screenshots or look in the Documents and screenshot collections in Google Photos. Google says Photos can identify screenshots and documents and organize them into dedicated albums, including categories such as IDs, receipts and event information. The organization is automatic; you do not need to create a folder first.

The collections are useful when a text search is too narrow or you want to browse screenshots visually. Google announced this organization for Android and iOS in 2023; the announcement describes how the feature works, not a guarantee that every account will show identical labels or controls today.
Choose between classic Search and Ask Photos

When a conversational search may help
If Ask Photos is enabled for your account, try describing what the screenshot shows or asking a question about its text. Google’s 2024 announcement described Ask Photos as able to understand natural-language questions and read text in images when needed. Treat its response as a way to locate a likely result, not proof that the match is correct: open the screenshot and verify the detail.
Search behavior has also evolved. In June 2025, Google said it was bringing classic search strengths into Ask Photos, with immediate results for simple searches while Gemini worked on more complex requests. That announcement described an expansion to eligible U.S. users at the time; it is not a current global eligibility rule. Google’s February 2026 tips page described Ask Photos availability in multiple countries and languages and said the Ask button was available to eligible Android and iOS users in the U.S. Check Google’s current Help information and your app for availability rather than relying on a dated rollout description or assuming the same controls appear everywhere.

Keep screenshots out of the main gallery without losing the collection
Google says you can set screenshots and documents to be automatically archived after 30 days. Archiving hides them from the main gallery, while they remain accessible in their dedicated albums. This is optional housekeeping: use it if you want a less crowded main view but still want the categorized collection available.
