Start with Finder if your Galaxy supports it; use My Files next to search names, recent items, file types and storage locations. If neither finds the item, check the app that created or downloaded it, then look in Gallery or the relevant Recycle bin if it may have been deleted.
Start with Finder, if it’s available on your Galaxy
Finder is the quickest first pass when you remember a word, phrase or clue but not where the content was saved. Samsung’s current guide says the newer Home Finder is available on devices running One UI 8.5 or later, starting with the Galaxy S26 series, and is off by default. To turn it on, open Home screen settings and enable Show Finder on Home screen. Exact labels and availability can vary by device, software and region. Samsung’s Finder guide explains the setup and supported search features.
Samsung documents natural-language search for Voice Recorder, Recorded Calls, Calendar, Notes, Reminders and My Files. Try a distinctive subject or phrase you remember, not just a filename. Finder may also show reservation cards and suggestions when Personal Data Intelligence has relevant data from selected apps; those results depend on the feature and data being available. Finder does not search every kind of content on every Galaxy, so a blank result is a cue to try the more targeted routes below.

Open My Files and tap its search icon. Enter part of the filename or a distinctive word that might appear in it. If you cannot remember any words, start with Recent files, then open the likely category: Images, Videos, Audio, Documents or Downloads. Also inspect each relevant storage location, such as internal storage and an SD card, rather than assuming the file is in phone storage.

Depending on the device and software, My Files may let you narrow results by file type or when they were saved. Samsung UK’s guide documents options such as yesterday, the past seven days and the past 30 days on its described experience; these exact filters may not appear on every phone. Use them as narrowing choices when available, not as a universal menu. Samsung’s download and My Files instructions cover categories, locations and recovery steps.
Older search controls may differ
Samsung’s One UI 4.1.1 feature documentation described searching all files or only the current folder, searching filenames or information inside files, sorting by name, date, size or type, and matching imperfect filename spellings. Those are version-specific historical features, not guarantees for current devices. If a control is not shown in your My Files version, use the filters and folders that are available rather than expecting the same options.

Check the app that owns the content
Some content is managed inside the app that created, received or downloaded it, rather than exposed as a regular file in My Files. Samsung notes that offline downloads in services such as Netflix are stored securely in the streaming app and are normally unavailable through My Files. Return to the likely source app and search there if Finder and My Files come up empty.

For a remembered context clue—such as a meeting, person, topic or approximate date—try the app most likely to contain it, such as Notes, Calendar, Voice Recorder, a messaging app or a streaming app. Search coverage depends on what the app and device expose.

If you think the item was deleted, check Recycle bin
On Samsung’s UK instructions, My Files’ Recycle bin must be enabled in My Files > menu > Settings. To look for a deleted file, open My Files > menu > Recycle bin and restore it if it is listed. Deleted pictures may instead be in Gallery > menu > Recycle bin. Samsung UK’s guide shows these paths.
Samsung US says My Files Trash retains deleted files for 30 days, but the feature is absent on tablets; behavior and availability depend on the device and software. Treat that retention period as specific to the Samsung US guidance, not a promise that every Galaxy keeps every deleted file for that long. Samsung’s file-management guidance notes that settings and screens can also vary by carrier and software version.

Check removable storage only if you used it
If you saved the item to an SD card, browse the SD card in My Files. Compatible Galaxy models can also work with USB OTG storage, but external-storage support varies by model. Samsung notes that some encrypted music or purchased content cannot be moved. A card or USB drive is relevant only if the missing item was actually saved there; it will not help locate a file stored elsewhere.

Choose the next search route by what you remember

For a quick sequence, try Finder, search or browse in My Files, check the likely source app, then inspect Gallery or Recycle bin if the item may be a photo or deleted. If you remember a storage card or USB drive, check it as a separate location.
