To find the setting on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings, search for Install unknown apps, select the result, then choose the app that will start the installation—such as Chrome—and enable its switch. The permission applies to that source app, not to every app or download on your phone.
Find the setting in Galaxy Settings
- Open Settings and tap the search field.
- Search for Install unknown apps, then tap the matching result. If prompted, select the setting again.
- Choose the app that will open the installation file, such as Chrome, and turn on Allow from this source or the switch shown on your phone.
- Return to the trusted app or downloaded APK and continue the installation.
On Galaxy S26, Samsung also lists this menu path: Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Install unknown apps. Menu organization can vary by model and software, so searching Settings is a useful fallback. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 instructions provide the model-specific path.
What “unknown sources” means
In this context, Samsung uses “unknown sources” for app installations outside the Play Store and Galaxy Store. The permission is assigned to the app that launches the installation. For example, if you download an APK in Chrome and open it there, you may need to allow Chrome as a source. Allowing one source does not make every other app a permitted installer.

Enable the permission only when you trust both the source app and the specific file; if the app is available in an official store, use that version instead. If the permission screen is unavailable or installation is blocked
Check Auto Blocker
Auto Blocker can block apps from unauthorized sources, and Samsung says it may disable the Install unknown apps menu. First verify that the app and file are trustworthy. If you decide to proceed, review Auto Blocker in Settings and follow Samsung’s instructions for the installation flow. Turning it off reduces a security protection; do not leave it off unnecessarily, and restore your preferred protection afterward if appropriate. Samsung documents this behavior in its Fold6/Flip6 Auto Blocker guidance.
Pay attention to security prompts
Samsung says a prompt may offer to have Google inspect an app for security. Keep built-in checks enabled when possible. A warning or block can indicate a real risk, so do not treat it as an obstacle to dismiss without considering the app’s source and trustworthiness. After the installation
If you enabled a source app only to install one APK, return to Settings > Install unknown apps, select that app, and switch off its permission when you no longer need it. This keeps the permission limited to the installation task rather than leaving that source app authorized indefinitely.
