Audit your website by crawling its important pages, recording each issue alongside the page that caused it, and checking those findings against Google Search Console. Fix links that point to broken or moved pages, but do not redirect every 404: a URL that is intentionally gone and has no replacement should return a genuine not-found response.
What a website audit can—and cannot—tell you
A site crawl helps you find links that lead to missing pages, server errors, redirect chains, loops, and other crawl conditions. The useful finding is not just an error code: it is the combination of the affected URL and the page that links to it, so you can make the correction where it belongs.
A crawler and Google Search Console answer different questions. A crawler can examine your site’s links and surface source pages for repairs. Search Console reports what Google observed about crawling and indexing; it is not a substitute for crawling the whole site. A URL can be crawled without being indexed, and indexing is not guaranteed or immediate.

Set the scope before you crawl
Start with the pages your site intends visitors and search engines to reach. Use the main navigation, important internal links, and XML sitemap as a baseline. The sitemap can help identify intended URLs, but it does not prove that each page is linked correctly or accessible.

Consider whether your site uses JavaScript to add links. Google says it generally crawls links expressed as an HTML anchor element with an href attribute. A control that looks like a link on screen may not be discoverable as one in the underlying page. Inspect the rendered HTML when links are inserted by JavaScript, and configure a crawler to render JavaScript if that is needed to see the content.
Access restrictions and crawl settings also affect the results. A crawl may not represent pages behind a login or content the crawler cannot reach. Note those boundaries so you do not mistake an incomplete crawl for a clean bill of health.

Run a crawl and retain the referring page
- Choose the starting point and scope. Crawl the site’s important pages, using the navigation and sitemap to help define what should be covered. Set rendering and access options to match the site where applicable.
- Review errors and notable response patterns. Look for internal links returning 4XX responses, server errors, redirect chains, and redirect loops. Check the destination and response rather than treating every warning as equally serious.
- Record the source URL for each finding. The page containing the broken link tells you where to update it. Crawler documentation describes exporting error URLs together with their source URLs for follow-up; see Screaming Frog SEO Spider.
- Keep the result actionable. Group findings by source page or destination URL and note the intended replacement, if there is one. This makes it easier to choose between correcting a link, redirecting a moved page, or leaving a legitimately removed URL unavailable.
The free version of Screaming Frog SEO Spider is described by its vendor as allowing crawls of up to 500 URLs; the limit is a product fact checked in 2026 and may change. A dedicated crawler is useful when you need broad discovery and source-page reports. Search Console is useful for Google-specific diagnostics. The tool finds issues; you still need to determine and implement the correct fix.
Use Search Console to check Google’s view
Use the Page indexing report to review Google’s reported indexing status, and URL Inspection to investigate an individual URL. The Crawl Stats report can help diagnose availability and crawling issues. These reports reflect Google’s observations and have different purposes from a full site crawl.

When you investigate a specific URL, distinguish between whether Google can access it and whether Google has indexed it. A successful live test does not guarantee indexing. Also compare the report’s dates and crawl history: a current live test can work even if Google encountered a temporary server error earlier.
Decide which 404s need action
Do not redirect or repair every URL merely because it returns 404. Google’s guidance prioritizes 404 pages that your site links to itself or lists in its sitemap. Trace the URL to its source and determine whether the page should still exist.

- The page moved: Redirect the old URL to the relevant replacement, and update internal links and the sitemap so they point to the current URL.
- The page was removed with no suitable replacement: Leave it as a genuine not-found response. Do not send every missing URL to the homepage or return a page that pretends the missing content exists.
- The URL is not intentionally part of the site: Check why it was requested before changing anything. Some 404s can arise from tracking behavior and may not affect crawling or ranking.
- The URL is linked internally or included in the sitemap but should work: Correct the source link or restore the intended page, then make sure the sitemap reflects the valid URL.
A 404 is a response to a missing URL, not by itself proof of an SEO penalty. The important questions are whether the URL should exist, how visitors or Google reached it, and whether a suitable replacement exists.

- Correct the source page. Replace an outdated internal link with the right destination, or remove it if there is no appropriate destination. Use descriptive anchor text so readers can understand where the link leads; Google’s link best practices also explain crawlable links.
- Redirect only when content has moved. Send the old URL to the replacement page rather than using a blanket homepage redirect. Update internal links and sitemap entries to the replacement URL.
- Re-crawl the source and destination. Confirm that the source no longer points to the wrong URL and that the destination responds as intended. Check for new redirect chains or loops.
- Check Google-specific questions in Search Console. Use URL Inspection or the Page indexing report when you need to know whether Google can reach or index a URL. Review report timing if a live test differs from an earlier reported error.
For a repeatable process, save the crawl findings and revisit the same scope after repairs or significant site changes. A clean result only describes the pages and conditions the crawl actually covered.

Keep accessibility claims in proportion
Finding and fixing broken links can help people navigate a site, but a link crawl alone is not an accessibility audit and does not establish WCAG conformance. W3C WAI’s G127 technique is an example for helping users understand a page’s relationship to a larger collection; WAI notes that techniques are examples, not requirements for meeting WCAG.
