To find a Vast.ai GPU offer that fits your job, use vastai search offers to filter for the GPU model and memory you need, then compare reliability, disk, network access, location, and total hourly price. A low listed rate is only a useful deal if the offer can run your workload and you can tolerate its rental terms.

Install the CLI and prepare access

Follow the current instructions in the official Vast.ai CLI repository to install vastai. The guide documents both an install script and a PyPI route; use the repository’s current syntax because installation instructions and flags can change. Configure an API key as directed there, and register your SSH public key before creating an instance.

Filter offers for your workload

Start with the hardware and constraints your job actually requires. The CLI’s vastai search offers command accepts filter expressions for GPU name and count, GPU and CPU memory, disk, reliability, compute capability, network speeds, total hourly price, location, direct-port count, verification, and rentability.

For example, this command follows the guide’s pattern to search for one GPU of a specified model, with at least 24 GB of GPU memory, a minimum reliability value, a price ceiling, and verified, rentable offers:

  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
vastai search offers 'gpu_name=RTX_4090 num_gpus=1 gpu_ram>=24 reliability>=0.98 dph_total<=1 verified=true rentable=true' --order 'dph_total' --limit 10

Treat those example values as a starting point, not universal requirements. Replace the GPU name, memory, reliability, and price ceiling with values that make sense for your software and budget. Confirm the exact filter syntax in the CLI guide before relying on a command.

By default, offer searches use verified on-demand offers and sort by score. Use --no-default when you want to search without those default filters. The guide also demonstrates sorting by performance per dollar, but a score cannot tell you whether an offer’s GPU memory, storage, networking, or access method fits your particular job.

Compare the shortlist before choosing

Use filters to narrow the marketplace, then evaluate the resulting offers against the practical requirements of your workload. A filter can exclude obvious mismatches; it cannot certify real-world performance for your code.

  • GPU and count: Check the exact model and number of GPUs your software supports, and whether a multi-GPU job can use the offered configuration.
  • Memory: Check GPU memory for the model, data, and batch size you plan to run. Check CPU memory separately if loading or preprocessing data could be a bottleneck.
  • Reliability: Consider the displayed reliability alongside how costly a lost or interrupted run would be.
  • Disk: Allow room for the container image, software, datasets, checkpoints, and output files. The instance’s disk allocation is separate from choosing a GPU offer.
  • Network and access: Check network speeds and direct-port availability if you need to transfer large files, expose a service, or connect in a particular way.
  • Location and price: Apply geographic constraints that matter to your latency or data needs, and compare total hourly prices rather than choosing by GPU rate alone.

Use the CLI’s ordering and result limit to make a manageable shortlist. Marketplace prices move continuously, so check live offers before committing; the official pricing page also advises querying current offers rather than relying on a static quote. No price in this guide should be treated as a current quote.

Choose on-demand or interruptible pricing deliberately

The CLI supports on-demand, reserved, and bid (interruptible) offer searches. A bid search can surface a lower or otherwise attractive candidate, but it does not by itself make instance creation use bid pricing. The CLI documentation says creation defaults to on-demand at dph_total unless you pass --bid_price.

Interruptible instances can be stopped when you are outbid, and storage charges can continue while an instance is stopped. Bid pricing is therefore a better fit for work that can resume after an interruption than for a run that must stay available uninterrupted. Checkpoint important work so you can recover progress if a stop occurs. Consult the CLI documentation for current bid-search and creation options.

Create the instance and connect

After choosing an offer, create an instance using its offer ID, a container image suited to your workload, and a disk allocation that can hold the environment and data. The official quick start uses this command shape:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
vastai create instance <OFFER_ID> --image <IMAGE> --disk <DISK_GB> --ssh --direct

Replace the angle-bracketed values with the selected offer ID, a suitable image, and the disk size you need; the image and capacity are workload-specific. The --ssh and --direct options in the example are not requirements for every connection pattern.

  1. Check the instance status with the CLI and wait until its actual status is running.
  2. Use the documented command to retrieve the SSH URL. It is a connection string, not an interactive shell by itself.
  3. Connect using the returned SSH details. Use the CLI’s documented transfer commands to move files as needed.

For exact status, SSH, and file-transfer command syntax, follow the current official CLI quick start.

Destroy the instance when the job is done

Destroy the instance through the CLI when you no longer need it. The official guide says destruction stops instance billing. Do not assume that merely disconnecting from SSH or leaving the machine idle ends charges; explicitly destroy the resource when finished. If you used interruptible pricing, remember that storage charges may continue while the instance is stopped.
