Yes, FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION has a physical Switch 2 release—but it is a Game-Key Card, not a cartridge containing the game. Square Enix says downloading it requires an internet connection and at least 130 GB of available storage. Nintendo currently estimates the game file at 130.1 GB, a figure that may change before release. The card is required to play, but it does not spare the console or an expansion card from storing the download.
What the Game-Key Card includes—and what it does not
Nintendo says Game-Key Cards do not contain the game data. You insert the card, download the software to Nintendo Switch 2 storage or a supported microSD Express card, and keep the card inserted when playing. For this title, Square Enix identifies the physical Switch 2 edition as a Game-Key Card and specifies at least 130 GB of available storage for the download.

Nintendo says an internet connection is required to download Game-Key Card software and for its first launch. After that first launch, the game can be started offline, but the card must still be inserted. Nintendo also says an account is not required to download the data. So the release is physical in the sense that buyers receive a card needed to launch the game; it is not a physical copy that carries the game data. Why 130 GB makes the format issue harder to ignore
The problem is the gap between what some buyers expect from a physical game and what this format delivers. A conventional game card can provide the software without requiring a download of the full game. A Game-Key Card does not: the complete download still has to fit somewhere, and the card itself cannot replace that storage.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo’s current US listing estimates REVELATION at 130.1 GB. Square Enix’s separate requirement is at least 130 GB available. Those figures are not contradictory: Nintendo labels its figure an estimate and warns that preorder details, including download size, may change, while the publisher states the space required for the download. Neither figure should be treated as a final measured install size ahead of release. (Nintendo; Square Enix)
How much Switch 2 storage is available?
Nintendo lists 256 GB of total system storage for Switch 2, but some of it is reserved for system use, so 256 GB is not the amount available for games. Nintendo says downloaded software and other content can also be stored on microSD Express cards. Its support FAQ says no individual game currently requires additional storage to play; Square Enix does not say a microSD Express card is mandatory for REVELATION. The practical requirement is having at least 130 GB available in an accepted storage location when downloading. (Nintendo Support; Square Enix)

- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
That makes storage planning part of buying the Game-Key Card. If the console does not have enough free space, a compatible microSD Express card can expand storage for downloaded software; it is an option, not a title-specific requirement established by Nintendo or Square Enix.
How large is it beside another Switch 2 Final Fantasy release?
Nintendo currently lists FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH at 91.5 GB on Switch 2. Against Nintendo’s estimated 130.1 GB listing for REVELATION, that is a 38.6 GB difference. This is a comparison of current Nintendo listing figures, not a final-install-size measurement or an explanation for why one game is larger. What buyers still get in the physical editions
Square Enix lists a Deluxe Edition with a soundtrack, artbook, and SteelBook case, and a limited Collector’s Edition that adds a Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth statue. Those physical extras may matter to collectors, but they do not change the Game-Key Card’s download and storage requirements. Edition availability can vary by region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The format debate is about expectations as well as storage
In an October 26, 2025 GamesRadar+ report, series director Naoki Hamaguchi acknowledged that some players dislike the format and said Switch 2 buyers particularly value physical media, so he expects the transition to be slower on that platform. His comments are perspective from a developer, not a measured survey of player opinion or a statement of Nintendo policy. (GamesRadar+)

- Your daily life as a witch-baker in Paris!
- Daytime, where Lunne manages her bakery and serves clients with her team of friends.
- Evening, where Lunne explores Paris, builds relationships, discovers the city's secrets and goes inside her friends' troubled heart.
- Night, where Lunne rests, improves her magic, decorates her bakery and spends time in her cosy atelier
For buyers, the distinction is straightforward: this is a real physical Switch 2 edition, but its card functions as a key to the downloaded game. That can suit someone who values a boxed card and physical extras. It does not meet the expectation that buying a physical copy avoids a very large download or the need to reserve storage for the game.
