Final Fantasy VII Revelation is intended to alternate between story-led sequences and open-world exploration—not to be exclusively linear or an uninterrupted open world. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told RPG Site that the contrasting media demos were designed to show different sides of the game, and that players will be able to move among multiple regions as they open.
Why did the two demos feel like different games?
The media demo emphasized a large world with a range of activities and directions to pursue. The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) demo instead focused on a more linear, story-led segment. Hamaguchi said the contrast was intentional: “We really wanted it this way; to show the difference in the scale between Rebirth and Revelation.”
Those demos were snapshots of different parts of the experience, not evidence that the finished game will stick to only one format. Hamaguchi described a rhythm in which story sequences guide players through the setting, followed by stretches of open-world freedom—a pattern he broadly compared with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
How will Revelation’s regions open?
Hamaguchi says multiple regions can become available at once, rather than unlocking strictly one after another. He described the intention as letting players “hop around to each one” instead of focusing on a single region during those portions of the game.

That approach changes how exploration and quests can connect. In his comparison, Rebirth’s Grasslands quests conclude in the Grasslands; Revelation quests may start in one region and take players into another before they finish. The interview does not specify how many regions will be available together, how large they are, or how often quests cross between them.
What will guide players through the open areas?
Open exploration does not mean every activity is necessarily intended for immediate completion. Hamaguchi said difficult activities and party-level barriers can signal that a player should return later. Those visible challenges provide a progression cue within areas that otherwise allow players to choose where to go.

The interview does not quantify how often such gates appear or establish how much of the game they affect. It describes them as one way the game can indicate that a challenge is beyond the party’s current readiness.
What is known about the release and platforms?
RPG Site’s 1 October 2026 interview article reports a planned launch on 8 April 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Treat that as the release plan reported by the article, not a separately verified current platform listing. Hamaguchi also said the studio has separate teams for gameplay and optimization, but the interview provides no platform-specific performance figures, resolutions, system requirements, or test results.
