Kotaku’s Kenneth Shepard came away from a short hands-on session with Final Fantasy VII Revelation convinced that its combat has the most new ideas in the trilogy’s final chapter, with Cid and Vincent as the standouts. That is one writer’s positive impression, published October 8, 2026, based on a limited demo. It is not a review, and it does not establish how the finished game will play. Below is what the early coverage shows, where it stops, and what to verify before you buy.
What the early impressions are based on
Two hands-on previews are available so far. They covered different parts of the game, and neither is an exhaustive evaluation.
- Kotaku, Kenneth Shepard, October 8, 2026. A short demo session focused on combat. Shepard’s praise for the playable characters and his doubts about the story and minigames are his own opinions.
- SmashPad, Danreb Victorio, September 10, 2026 (PAX West 2026). A 45-minute session covering Highwind travel, regional exploration, Costa del Sol, Gold Saucer and its minigames. The session ran out before the writer could try FITS.
Because the two sessions covered different content, the coverage does not give a complete picture of any single system. Treat both as snapshots.

Cid: a spear-wielding Dragoon built around movement
Shepard describes Cid as a Dragoon, a fighter who uses a spear and closes distance by leaping. In his words: “Cid is a Dragoon, which means that he wields a spear and has a playstyle characterized by leaping across the scrap to bring down his weapon on foes.”
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: "Graphics Mode" prioritizes 4K high-resolution graphics; "Performance Mode" prioritizes smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customizable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
- Play the brand-new episode featuring Yuffie and experience new combat and gameplay additions
Shepard singles out three things he liked: Cid’s speed, his ability to switch targets quickly, and his ability to stagger enemies. Those are the traits that make him feel distinct from a standard melee party member, and they are the traits most likely to shape how players approach fights.
Vincent: range first, then a second playstyle
Vincent fights with a handgun at range. He can also transform into a Galian Beast, which shifts him to a more aggressive style at close range. Shepard’s assessment is that this gives Vincent almost two playstyles in one: “He’s almost two characters in one, and after playing as him for a bit, I couldn’t imagine relying on previous ranged characters if I didn’t have to.”
The transformation is the feature Shepard names most directly as a reason the character stands out. Coverage does not describe how the transformation is triggered or limited, so readers should not assume details beyond the switch between the two modes.
FITS: job abilities on any character
The preview coverage describes FITS as a system for equipping job-based abilities to any character. Shepard’s demo used it with Cloud, who used the Summoner FITS to call Shiva and Titan. The pitch is that familiar characters can take on new roles without being locked into one job.

FITS is only described in Shepard’s session. SmashPad’s writer did not reach it, and neither source provides a full feature breakdown, so the number of jobs, how they unlock and how they interact with the party are not established by the coverage.
How the combat fits together
Shepard describes the combat as a blend of real-time action and tactical decision-making. The main elements he describes are:
- Real-time action combined with tactical choices.
- Character switching within a three-character party.
- Synergy attacks between party members.
- Shared resources across the party.
How these elements balance against one another over a full playthrough is not something a short demo can show.

Where the reservations are
Shepard is positive about the combat but not about everything around it. He says his reservations about the story of the Remake trilogy may carry over to Revelation, and he is concerned that minigame content could become bloated and get in the way of the main game. Those are his opinions about what might happen, not established outcomes.

SmashPad’s writer came away with a different emphasis, noting the amount of activity available in the session. Neither preview can say how the balance between story, exploration and minigames will feel across the full game.

SmashPad’s September 10, 2026 preview reports an April 8, 2027 release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. This is a reported schedule from a preview, not a date confirmed in these sources. Check the official store page or publisher announcements for the current date and platforms before planning a purchase around it.
Editions and where to buy
A Steam store search returns a pre-purchase page for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with standalone and bundled editions listed. When the page was opened on October 9, 2026, it redirected to an age-check screen, so the contents and prices of each edition could not be confirmed. Retail availability on Amazon and the physical format were not established.

Before buying, check the following:
- Search the Steam store for “Pre-purchase FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION” and complete the age check if prompted.
- Compare the standalone and bundled editions, and confirm what each includes.
- Confirm the platform you are buying for and whether the product is digital or physical.
- If you are buying a physical copy from a retailer, confirm the exact title, edition, platform and format on the product page.
If you are new to the series, the preceding entry in the trilogy is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Coverage of Revelation does not depend on it for the combat ideas described above, but the story reservations Shepard mentions concern the trilogy as a whole.
Quick Recap
Who this preview matters for
- Players who care most about combat variety: the early reports point to Cid’s movement, Vincent’s two modes and FITS as the systems to watch. FITS in particular has been seen in only one of the two sessions.
- Players who weigh story heavily: Shepard’s reservations are directly relevant, and the previews do not address the narrative.
- Players who want a lot of optional content: SmashPad’s session showed how much is available. Shepard’s concern about minigame bloat is worth weighing against that.
