You can start Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without playing Remake, and you do not need to complete every side activity to make progress. The key is to learn the rhythm of its real-time combat and ATB commands, switch characters to make decisions yourself, and adjust your party and materia to the encounter rather than chase one “best” build.
Can you play Rebirth without playing Remake?
Yes. PlayStation describes Rebirth as a standalone experience that can be enjoyed as a first entry. It is still the second game in a larger story, so playing Remake first can provide more context for the characters and events, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding the game’s systems.
Progression does not carry over in the way some returning players might expect. Director Naoki Hamaguchi says the games are balanced independently: “Because of this, each game’s balancing is done independently and a player’s levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next.” Prior-save bonuses are separate from carrying over your levels or abilities.
How does combat work?
Combat combines real-time movement and attacks with commands that spend ATB. Fighting builds ATB; when you have a charge, you can use it for an ability, spell, item, or another command. Equipment and materia shape a character’s stats, skills, and available abilities. See PlayStation’s official game guide for the system overview.

Build ATB, then spend it with purpose
Think of basic fighting as the way to build resources for more deliberate actions. Rather than waiting for the AI-controlled party to handle every tactical decision, switch to another character and use their available commands when you need them. Characters can be switched instantly, making it practical to move between roles during a fight.
Try Classic mode if real-time control feels busy
Classic mode automates real-time attacking and defending while leaving command choices to you. It offers a more menu-led way to engage with the same command system; choose it if managing movement and command selection at once is getting in the way of learning.

Practice before a difficult fight
The specialist beginner guide recommends the in-game tutorials and Chadley’s VR tutorials as places to learn and practice. It also advises blocking, switching characters, and using Synergy Skills to respond to pressure or reach distant and airborne enemies. These are general tactical suggestions, not requirements for every encounter. For the guide’s practical tips, see GamesRadar’s beginner guide.
How should you build your party?
There is no single lineup or materia setup established as best for every fight. Weapons, armor, accessories, materia, skill trees, and character pairings all give you ways to customize. Start with a toolkit that covers what you need, then make a small adjustment when an enemy or encounter calls for it.

- Keep healing available. Include a healing option so you can respond to damage rather than relying on attacks alone.
- Bring elemental flexibility. Keep useful elemental options in your materia choices and change them when the encounter suggests a different approach.
- Learn each character by controlling them. Switching helps you discover what each party member can do and build ATB for the commands you want to use.
- Revisit your setup as you unlock options. Skill trees and equipment expand your choices, so a setup that is convenient early need not remain fixed.
This is a flexible starting approach, not a tested prescription for a particular boss or difficulty. Avoid treating any one materia combination or character pairing as mandatory.
How do Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities help?
Synergy is a paired-party system: characters can combine actions through Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities. Hamaguchi describes Synergy commands and abilities as using a gauge charge, and says skill trees can unlock abilities. The available options therefore depend on your roster and progression; do not assume every pairing is available from the outset.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments

- Play the brand-new episode featuring Yuffie and experience new combat and gameplay additions
When a pairing or ability becomes available, try it in a low-pressure fight and notice how it fits your preferred way of playing. Synergy gives you more options for coordinating characters, but it does not replace ATB commands or the value of adapting to the encounter. The mechanics and progression details are discussed in the PlayStation.Blog interview with director Naoki Hamaguchi.

Optional exploration is a major part of Rebirth, but you can set your own pace. Regions offer side quests, optional battles, minigames, and other activities; PlayStation presents these as optional rather than prerequisites for following the main quest. If you want to stay focused, prioritize the story. If you enjoy exploring, take regional activities as they interest you instead of treating the map as a completion checklist.
Best Value
- The Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH PS5 controller skin (inside the case) featuring Cloud and Sephiroth. This PS5 controller skin provides full coverage without buttons or sensor interference.
- An Expansive World: As the party searches for Sephiroth, explore the beautiful, expansive regions of the world and open up new areas to discover through unique forms of transportation
- Deepen their relationships to unleash powerful team based combos
- An Evolved Battle System: Combine strategic thinking with thrilling action combat alongside your comrades, including newly added characters
- Beyond the Walls of Fate: In this standalone adventure for fans and newcomers, Cloud and his comrades venture across the planet, their fates unwritten, making each step outside the dystopian city of Midgar fresh and mysterious
Hamaguchi says side content has “nearly double” the volume of main-quest content. That is a qualitative comparison from the director, not a precise percentage or a promise about how long any individual activity takes. He also explains that “The world map is vast and expansive, so not all of the locations on it will be used in the main story alone.”
Use regional chocobos to traverse the world
Chocobos differ by region and can open up different kinds of traversal. Hamaguchi gives mountain chocobos that climb sheer cliffs and sky chocobos that fly as examples. Pay attention to the capabilities of the chocobo available in your current region when exploring places that ordinary movement cannot reach.
Gather and craft as you go, if it suits your pace
The specialist guide recommends gathering material clusters while riding chocobos and crafting as materials accumulate, noting that some crafted consumables can be useful early. These are optional efficiency tips, not a requirement to stop and collect everything. The guide also notes that Magnify’s value changes with progression, so do not assume it is an automatic early-game choice.
You can return to regions later
If you are concerned about leaving an activity behind, Hamaguchi says players can return to regions after advancing the main quest. That gives you room to keep moving with the story and revisit optional areas later.
Quick Recap
A simple first-hours plan
- Choose your control style. Start with standard combat, or switch to Classic mode if you prefer automated real-time attacks and defense with command choices left to you.
- Use tutorials to learn the controls. Try the in-game instruction or Chadley’s VR tutorials before relying on unfamiliar commands in a demanding fight.
- Switch characters and spend ATB. Fight to build ATB, then use commands and move between party members so you learn their roles.
- Keep your loadout understandable. Equip a healing option and useful elemental choices, then adjust when an encounter gives you a reason.
- Try Synergy when it becomes available. Experiment with the paired options your characters and skill trees currently provide.
- Choose your exploration pace. Follow the main quest, sample optional activities, or return to regions later; side content does not have to become a checklist.
