Naoki Hamaguchi says he argued for a physical edition of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but the reported disc will not contain the complete game: it holds the opening section, and players must download the rest. His prediction that future physical releases could be “essentially disc-less” is his personal forecast, not an announced Square Enix policy.
What the physical edition includes
In a 1 October 2026 interview with Radio Times, Hamaguchi said the edition has a disc containing the game’s opening, which he described as a “key disc.” After that, the game asks the player to download the rest. GamesRadar+ likewise reported a single disc and a required internet download for the remainder.
So this is a boxed disc release, but not a complete offline copy of the game. The physical disc and Hamaguchi’s hypothetical future box containing a printed download code are different arrangements.

In an interview attributed to IGN and reproduced by MMO.Net on 10 September 2026, Hamaguchi said the team considered a disc size like the one used for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. He said that approach would require compromises in the game’s fidelity and quality, which the team wanted to avoid. The chosen arrangement was to put some sections on the disc and deliver the rest by download.

That is the development team’s stated rationale; the interview does not independently establish the game’s storage requirements or assess other technical options.
Hamaguchi advocated for a disc, but publishing decides the lineup
Hamaguchi said he used his position to argue for a physical version “as much as possible,” citing pressure toward disc-less and digital editions. He also said product lineups, stock-keeping units and how a game goes on sale are the publishing team’s responsibility, and that his authority over those decisions is limited. His support for the edition should not be mistaken for having sole control over the final retail format.

What “essentially disc-less” means
Hamaguchi said he could imagine a not-too-distant future in which physical media is “essentially disc-less”: a box might contain a piece of paper with a code rather than a game disc. He presented that as a possibility, not a confirmed plan from Square Enix or a claim that all physical games will become codes.
Reported release date and platforms
Radio Times reported an 8 April 2027 release for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. Those are reported future details, not confirmation that a boxed disc edition will be sold for every platform. The cited reporting does not establish platform-by-platform physical availability or regional edition details.
