No—Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is not planned to have fewer minigames than Rebirth. Director Naoki Hamaguchi said the team would keep their number, while making activities easier to judge and more optional in practice through clearer reward information, difficulty options, and the ability to skip a minigame. Those features are reported plans, not hands-on-confirmed results.
What the director said about minigame criticism
In a June 6, 2026 interview with GameSpot, series director Naoki Hamaguchi acknowledged that the team had seen varied feedback about the minigames in Rebirth, including their quantity. He described the question for Revelation as how to deliver minigames to players today—not simply whether to add or remove them.
Hamaguchi said the team did not intend to increase or decrease the number. Instead, the stated design aim is to make participation feel more like a choice, particularly by reducing the extent to which activities are tied to combat-related character growth.

Rewards should be clearer before you play
Push Square reported on June 10, 2026, that the game is intended to make rewards clear in advance, so players can see what participating in side content will earn them. This can help players decide whether an activity is worth their time without discovering its payoff only after completing it.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Rewards are meant to favor customization over combat growth
GameSpot reported that most minigames would be optional and offer character-customization rewards rather than combat buffs. Hamaguchi’s reasoning was that an activity can feel compulsory if players must complete it to improve a character’s combat capability, even when the game technically labels it optional. The reported approach is meant to separate minigame rewards from that pressure.
Difficulty adjustments and skipping are reported plans
Push Square also reported options to adjust minigame difficulty and skip a minigame. These are announced plans, not features independently verified in a released game. The reports do not establish the exact range of difficulty settings, whether every activity can be skipped, or what rewards a player might forgo by doing so.

Rebirth and Revelation: what is changing
| Question | Rebirth | Revelation plan reported in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Will the number of minigames be reduced? | Not applicable; this is the prior entry. | No. Hamaguchi said the team would not reduce the number (Push Square, June 10, 2026). |
| How optional are activities in practice? | Hamaguchi said tying optional minigames heavily to character growth can make them feel less optional (GameSpot, June 6, 2026). | Most are reported to be optional, with rewards aimed at customization rather than combat buffs (GameSpot, June 6, 2026). |
| Are rewards disclosed ahead of time? | Not stated in the cited reporting. | Rewards are reported to be made clearer before participation (Push Square, June 10, 2026). |
| Can players change difficulty or skip? | Not stated in the cited reporting. | Difficulty adjustment and skipping are reported plans (Push Square, June 10, 2026). |
What this means if you disliked Rebirth’s minigames
Do not expect Revelation to solve the issue by offering a shorter list of activities. The reported design response is about choice and consequences: knowing the reward, having a way to adjust or skip activities, and avoiding a strong link between minigame completion and combat progression.

Release timing and physical-edition caveat
TechRadar reported April 8, 2027 as the planned release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Release schedules and platform availability can change, so check current official listings closer to launch.
GamesRadar reported that the physical edition’s disc contains only the opening parts of the game and that a download is required for the rest. It should not be treated as a complete on-disc copy.
