Choose Files by Google if your priorities are reclaiming storage, finding everyday files, sharing with nearby devices, moving files to cloud or removable storage, and placing selected files in a separate PIN- or pattern-protected folder. Choose Material Files if you need a filesystem-first tool with root-aware operations, archive creation and extraction, symbolic-link and permission awareness, or FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV connections.

Both are free Android file managers, but they are not interchangeable versions of the same design. Files by Google is organized around common consumer tasks; Material Files is aimed at people who want more direct control over files, storage locations, and network shares.

The short answer

If you mainly want to… Better fit Why
Clear junk, duplicate files, old chat photos, and cache Files by Google Its Play listing emphasizes cleanup recommendations, search, browsing, and sorting by size.
Send files to a nearby Android phone or Chromebook Files by Google Quick Share is built in; the listing says transfers can work without internet and use end-to-end encryption.
Keep selected files behind an app-specific lock Files by Google Safe Folder supports a PIN or pattern separate from the device lock.
Browse root locations or Linux-style metadata Material Files It advertises root support and awareness of symbolic links, permissions, and SELinux context.
Create, inspect, or extract archives Material Files Its listing names common compressed-archive operations.
Connect to a server or network share Material Files FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV are listed as supported protocols.
Prefer publicly available source code Material Files The project identifies itself as GPL-3.0-or-later open source.

This is a feature-fit decision, not a speed or battery verdict. No independent head-to-head performance, usability, or privacy study establishes that one app is faster, safer, or more reliable than the other.

What Files by Google is built to do

Files by Google treats file management as a set of routine phone-maintenance jobs. Its current store description highlights recommendations for removing old chat-app photos, duplicate files, cache, and other space-consuming items. You can search and browse files, sort by size, and move content among phone storage, an SD card, USB storage, Google Drive, and other installed cloud-storage apps.

That emphasis makes it a natural default for a phone owner who does not want to understand Android’s storage paths. The app points out likely cleanup targets instead of requiring you to inspect every directory manually. Recommendations still require your review: deleting a duplicate, cached item, or old image is an irreversible choice unless you have another copy.

Nearby sharing

Quick Share is part of the advertised feature set. Google’s listing says files can be sent to nearby Android devices and Chromebooks, can work without an internet connection, and use end-to-end encryption. Those are the developer’s product claims, not results from an independent transfer test. The recipient’s device, Android version, visibility setting, and wireless radios can affect whether a transfer appears.

Cloud and removable-storage movement

The listing names Google Drive, SD cards, USB drives, and other installed cloud-storage providers as destinations or sources. A USB-C flash drive is optional, not a requirement for the app. Compatibility depends on your phone’s port, USB host support, adapter, filesystem, and manufacturer restrictions. Check those details before buying storage.

Safe Folder

Safe Folder is intended for selected files that you do not want visible in ordinary browsing. Files by Google says it can be protected with a PIN or pattern that is different from the device lock. Treat that as an app-level privacy feature, not encryption of every file on the phone. Anyone who can unlock the device, access an unprotected copy, or obtain the PIN may still be able to reach the content.

What Material Files is built to do

Material Files takes a more direct filesystem approach. The developer describes it as an open-source Material Design file manager and advertises root support, archive handling, and connections to FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV servers. It also calls out symbolic links, file permissions, and SELinux context—details that matter when you administer an Android device, work with a Linux-like environment, or manage files on a home server.

Root-aware operations

Root support is an advanced capability, not a prerequisite for ordinary file browsing. On a rooted phone, operations can reach locations and metadata that standard Android apps cannot. That power also increases the consequences of a mistake: changing ownership, permissions, or system files can break an app or the operating system. Do not grant or use root simply to obtain features you do not need.

Archives

Material Files says it can view, extract, and create common compressed archives. This is useful when a download arrives as an archive or when you need to package several files before sending them elsewhere. The listing does not define every supported format, compression option, or maximum archive size, so verify a particular format with a small, noncritical file before relying on it for a large transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network protocols

FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV cover common server and network-share scenarios. SFTP is generally used when an encrypted SSH-based connection is required; SMB is common for a local file server or network-attached storage; WebDAV is used by some web-based storage systems; and FTP is an older protocol whose security depends heavily on how the server is configured. The app’s support for a protocol does not make an insecure server secure. Use encrypted credentials and a trusted network, and avoid storing passwords in an easily accessible place.

Feature comparison

Decision point Files by Google Material Files
Primary emphasis Cleanup, search and browsing, nearby sharing, cloud/removable-storage movement, media playback, and locked files. Direct filesystem browsing, root support, archives, remote-server protocols, themes, and Linux-aware details.
Cleanup guidance Recommendations for old chat photos, duplicate files, cache, and other targets are advertised. The listing does not position the app around automated cleanup recommendations.
Nearby transfer Quick Share is advertised for nearby Android and Chromebook devices. Network protocols are advertised; a comparable built-in nearby-sharing feature is not stated.
Cloud and removable storage Google Drive, SD cards, USB drives, and other installed cloud apps are named. Remote access is described through FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV; a comparable cloud-integration list is not stated.
Root and metadata The current listing emphasizes ordinary file management and does not advertise root support. Root support plus symbolic-link, permission, and SELinux-context awareness are advertised.
Archive tools Archive features are not highlighted in the listing consulted. Viewing, extracting, and creating common compressed archives are advertised.
Locked files Safe Folder can use a separate PIN or pattern. A comparable separately locked folder is not stated in the listing consulted.
Source model Google’s app; public source availability is not stated in the materials consulted. Public repository under GPL-3.0-or-later.

Choose Files by Google when everyday maintenance is the priority

  • You regularly run out of space and want suggested cleanup targets rather than manual directory-by-directory inspection.
  • You need a straightforward search and browsing experience for photos, downloads, documents, and media.
  • You exchange files with nearby Android phones or Chromebooks.
  • You move files between internal storage, an SD card, a USB drive, Google Drive, or another installed cloud app.
  • You want selected files hidden behind a separate PIN or pattern.
  • You prefer a mainstream Google-managed app and do not need root or server-protocol support.

Files by Google is also the less complicated starting point for a family member or a nontechnical user. Its advertised features map to recognizable goals—free space, find a file, send a file, or lock a file—without requiring knowledge of mount points, permissions, or network shares.

Choose Material Files when direct control matters

  • You already use root and understand the risks of modifying protected locations.
  • You need to inspect or preserve symbolic links, permissions, or SELinux context.
  • You create or unpack archives on the phone.
  • You connect to a NAS, server, or shared folder over FTP, SFTP, SMB, or WebDAV.
  • You value a public code repository and GPL-3.0-or-later licensing.
  • You would rather browse a filesystem directly than receive cleanup suggestions.

Material Files is the more specialized choice. Its extra capabilities are valuable only when your workflow calls for them; they do not automatically make routine photo or download management better.

How to set up a practical workflow

Using Files by Google for a cleanup and backup pass

  1. Install the current version from Google Play and review the permissions Android presents. Permission names and prompts can vary by device and Android release.
  2. Open the cleanup area and inspect each recommendation. Review the files in a category before confirming deletion; do not treat every suggestion as disposable.
  3. Use search or browsing when you need a specific file. Sort by size when storage pressure is the problem, then open or share a file to verify it before moving or deleting it.
  4. For a backup, copy important content to Google Drive, an SD card, a compatible USB drive, or another installed cloud app. Confirm that the destination contains the files before removing the originals.
  5. For a nearby transfer, enable the required wireless features and make the recipient discoverable in Quick Share. Confirm the recipient and filename before accepting or sending.
  6. For sensitive items, move them into Safe Folder and record the PIN or pattern somewhere secure. Losing that credential can make the protected files inaccessible.

Using Material Files for an advanced file operation

  1. Install the current release and grant only the access Android requests for the task you intend to perform.
  2. Start with ordinary shared storage. Navigate to the target directory and check the full path before renaming, moving, or deleting anything.
  3. For an archive, select the files, choose the archive action, and test the resulting archive by opening it or extracting it to a temporary directory.
  4. For a network location, add the server using the protocol it actually supports. Prefer SFTP when the server offers it and verify the hostname, port, account, and remote path.
  5. For root operations, authenticate only when needed. Before changing permissions, ownership, links, or system files, make a recovery copy and write down the original values.
  6. After a transfer or extraction, open representative files and compare sizes or checksums when the data is important. A completed copy operation is not proof that every file is usable.

Android storage permissions: what the apps can and cannot promise

Android storage access is version- and permission-sensitive. Google Play classifies access to user files and directories as sensitive and high risk. On Android 11 and later, use of MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE is restricted to eligible apps whose core function genuinely needs broad access; it requires review and a clear user prompt. Google’s policy also lists ordinary file picking as a disallowed reason to request that broad access and recommends the Storage Access Framework or MediaStore when those APIs are suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This policy context does not prove that either app requests MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE on every phone. The exact permission set and accessible locations can differ by manufacturer, Android version, app version, and the user’s choices. A file manager may be able to browse shared storage while still being unable to modify a protected directory or an external SD-card location without a system picker.

Material Files’ developer specifically says the app is not a replacement for Android’s DocumentsUI and relies on DocumentsUI for some external-SD-card access. If an operation opens a system file picker, that is an Android access boundary rather than evidence that the app is malfunctioning.

Privacy and transparency signals

Google Play’s Data safety sections are developer-provided disclosures. They can vary by use, region, age, and later updates, so read the current entry for the version you install. “No third-party data sharing” does not mean “collects no data.”

Signal Files by Google Material Files
Third-party sharing The Play disclosure says no third-party data sharing. The Play disclosure says no third-party data sharing.
Possible collection The disclosure lists possible collection of personal information, app activity, and two other categories. The disclosure lists possible collection of app information and performance data, plus device or other IDs.
Encryption in transit Shown in the Play disclosure. Shown in the Play disclosure.
Security review The Play disclosure indicates an independent security review. No equivalent independent-review statement is identified in the disclosure summarized here.
Open source Public source availability is not established by the materials consulted. The developer repository identifies GPL-3.0-or-later licensing.

Open source improves inspectability and lets others examine, build, or modify the project, but source availability alone is not proof of an independent security audit. Conversely, a store disclosure is not a complete technical privacy audit. Compare the permissions shown on your device, the app’s current privacy page, and the network or account features you actually enable.

What the download and rating numbers mean

Store counters are context, not a head-to-head quality test. Google Play showed a 5B+ cumulative download bracket for Files by Google and a 1M+ bracket for Material Files when checked on October 13, 2026. Those figures are lifetime store brackets, not current active-user counts. The same snapshot showed 4.5 stars from 9.08 million reviews for Files by Google and 4.3 stars from 7.39 thousand reviews for Material Files; different audiences and review volumes make those numbers unsuitable as a direct quality ranking.

Google reported more than 30 million monthly users for Files Go in a 2018 announcement, before the app was rebranded as Files by Google. That is a historical, company-reported figure and should not be read as a current user count.

Common problems and the right response

A file is visible but cannot be edited

Check whether it is in a protected Android location, on an external SD card, or governed by a system picker. Reopen the operation through DocumentsUI when prompted, or copy the file to a location your app can modify. Do not use root casually to bypass a boundary.

A cleanup suggestion includes something you still need

Cancel that category, inspect individual files, and make a backup first. Cleanup recommendations are suggestions, not a guarantee that every item is safe to delete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Quick Share transfer does not appear

Confirm that both devices support the feature, are nearby, have the required wireless settings enabled, and are visible to one another. Check the recipient identity before accepting. A lack of internet connectivity does not eliminate the need for local wireless communication.

A network share will not connect in Material Files

Verify the protocol, hostname, port, account, password, and remote path independently. Test the same account with another trusted client if possible. A server may permit SMB but not SFTP, or may require a VPN or local-network connection.

An archive extracts incorrectly

Try a small archive first, confirm that the format is supported, and extract into a temporary directory. For critical data, keep the original archive and verify several extracted files before deleting it.

Root access produces unexpected results

Stop and restore the previous permissions or files from your backup. Root changes can affect boot, system updates, and other apps. If you cannot identify the original state, seek device-specific recovery guidance rather than experimenting on the live system.

Which one should you install?

Install Files by Google first if your phone is short on space, you mostly handle photos and downloads, or you want nearby sharing and a locked folder. Its advertised workflow is intentionally approachable and covers the most common consumer jobs.

Install Material Files first if you already know you need root-aware browsing, archive operations, Linux-style metadata, or a connection to FTP, SFTP, SMB, or WebDAV. Those capabilities are the reason to choose it; they are not advantages that every Android user will notice.

You can also keep both. Use Files by Google for cleanup, ordinary search, Quick Share, and Safe Folder, and use Material Files for a server connection or a specialized archive task. If you do, review each app’s permissions separately and avoid performing the same deletion or move in both apps at once.
