First identify what is blank: File Explorer’s Home or Quick access view, the entire Explorer window, or the desktop after sign-in. Those symptoms point to different troubleshooting paths. Start with a low-risk Explorer restart, then restart Windows and check for updates. Only consider uninstalling an update or repairing Windows when simpler steps fail and the timing supports it.
Identify which part of Windows is blank
File Explorer’s Home and Quick access views can show pinned folders and other content, including recent files and frequent folders. An empty Home view is not the same as an Explorer window that will not display folder contents, or a blank desktop after you sign in.
- Only Home or Quick access is empty: Try opening another folder or selecting This PC. If those work, focus on the Home view and its settings.
- The whole Explorer window is empty or unresponsive: Restart the Explorer process using the steps below.
- The desktop is blank after sign-in: Explorer may not have started correctly. The same process restart can help restore the shell, though it is not a guaranteed fix for every cause.

Restarting the shell is a reversible first step. Microsoft gives these instructions for a blank screen with a cursor; for an empty File Explorer window, restarting the process is a reasonable low-risk check, not a guaranteed cure.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer, then select Restart.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and press Enter.

Restart the PC and check for Windows updates
A full restart can clear a temporary shell problem. Then check for a fix: open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart again if Windows prompts you. Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting as general File Explorer troubleshooting steps in its File Explorer troubleshooting guide.

If only Home or Quick access is blank
First check whether ordinary navigation works: open This PC or another folder. If those views display correctly, review File Explorer Options and its Quick access privacy controls for recent files and frequent folders. These settings can change what Home or Quick access shows, but Microsoft does not describe clearing its history as a definitive fix for every blank view.

A suggestion in an individual Microsoft Q&A discussion involved deleting Recent or AutomaticDestinations data. That is anecdotal, not a universal Microsoft fix, and deleting cache data may remove recent or pinned history. Treat it as a later, targeted option rather than a first step.

Uninstall an update only if the timing fits
If the problem began immediately after a specific update and remains after the simpler checks, identify that update before considering removal. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the update and installation date. Microsoft says uninstalling a recent update may help when a problem starts after it; the route depends on whether Windows starts normally or you need Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
Microsoft’s recovery options for Windows explain how to choose the available recovery path. Do not remove an update solely because it was installed around the same time; target the update that preceded the symptom.

A narrow Windows 11 26H1 example
Microsoft’s September 2026 Windows 11 26H1 release notes describe black-screen or desktop-loading issues on some systems after the August 2026 preview update KB5120996 and subsequent updates. Microsoft observed the issue primarily on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix and lists manually launching explorer.exe as a workaround. This enterprise-specific report does not establish that the same issue affects ordinary consumer PCs or explains every blank File Explorer window. Enterprise IT can review Microsoft’s Windows 11 26H1 release-health notes and the September 2026 update history for applicability.
Repair Windows system files if simpler checks fail
If the problem persists and system-file corruption is a concern, Microsoft’s recommended sequence is to run DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). Use an elevated Command Prompt:

- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Run
sfc /scannow. Keep the window open until verification reaches 100%.
DISM normally uses Windows Update as a repair source and can supply files needed by SFC. These scans are more involved than restarting Explorer and do not guarantee that the blank view will be resolved. See Microsoft’s instructions for repairing missing or corrupted system files.
Protect files before advanced recovery
If you are considering a broader recovery option, back up important files first. Microsoft distinguishes the effects of these choices:
- System Restore: Rolls back system files and settings without affecting personal files.
- Uninstall an update: Removes the selected update and does not affect personal files or apps.
- Reset this PC: Offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything; understand the selected option before proceeding.
- Reinstall Windows from installation media: Removes everything.
Microsoft documents these options in its Windows recovery guide and its guidance on backing up and restoring with Windows. If the PC is managed by work or school, ask your IT department before removing updates or starting recovery.
