For a dependable OBS-to-YouTube workflow, record gameplay to MKV, remux the finished recording to MP4 if your editor or upload process needs it, and export a re-encoded file only when you need to change the codec, resolution, frame rate, or other video settings. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video; transcoding does re-encode it and may affect quality.

Choose the right kind of conversion

Before changing a gameplay file, identify whether you need to change its container or its encoded video. A container packages video, audio, and related data into a file; MP4 and MKV are containers. H.264, HEVC, and AV1 are video codecs. The distinction determines whether a conversion is quick and avoids an extra video encode, or requires processing that can take longer and change image quality.

Operation What changes When to use it
Remux The container changes, but the encoded video and audio streams are copied rather than re-encoded. Use it when an editor or upload workflow needs MP4 instead of MKV, and the existing streams are already suitable.
Transcode or re-encode Video and/or audio is decoded and encoded again. The output codec, resolution, frame rate, or other settings can change. Use it when the destination requires different encoding settings or the source is not compatible. Quality can change, and processing time depends on the source, settings, and hardware.

A remux cannot make an unsupported codec compatible: it changes the wrapper, not the stream inside it. OBS explains its recording formats and remuxing options in its Recording Formats Guide.

Record safely in OBS, then make a compatible copy

Use MKV as the capture container

OBS recommends MKV for typical local recording because an unexpected interruption is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. MP4 is common in editing and publishing workflows, but an MP4 recording that is not finalized properly can be unusable. Recording to MKV first separates capture resilience from the format you later need for delivery. See OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide for recording setup guidance.

Remux to MP4 when needed

After recording, use OBS’s built-in remuxing if your editor or publishing workflow calls for MP4. In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings, select the MKV recording, and start the remux. Check that the resulting MP4 opens in the intended editor and that its audio tracks are present. Keep the original MKV as a master when storage allows; if the MP4 has an issue, the original capture remains available.

Remuxing avoids a video re-encode, so it does not apply a new quality setting or reduce quality through another video encoding pass. If you need to change resolution, frame rate, or codec, export from an editor or use a transcoder instead.

Set OBS quality and performance to fit the session

OBS recording presets trade off image quality, file size, and system demand. The best choice depends on how much storage is available and whether the computer can encode while running the game smoothly. OBS notes that available encoders and their performance depend on the system; test the settings you intend to use rather than assuming one preset suits every PC.

  • High Quality: A practical starting point when file size matters and the footage does not need the highest available recording quality.
  • Indistinguishable Quality: A higher-quality choice that generally uses more storage and may place a greater demand on the system than a lower-quality preset.
  • Lossless: A specialized option for situations where preserving the capture in a lossless format is important. OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide, dated September 14, 2023, estimates around 7 GB per minute for this preset. That figure is specific to the preset and is not a general gameplay recording size estimate.

Higher-demand encoding options and 60-fps output can be demanding. Check for dropped frames or performance problems during a short test, especially if the game is already using most of the computer’s resources. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide describes relevant recording options.

Use YouTube’s upload settings for YouTube

YouTube’s official recommended upload encoding settings are a destination-specific baseline, not a universal profile for every platform. Its current guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, 48 kHz audio, and an upload frame rate that matches the recording. For SDR video, YouTube recommends BT.709 color. Use the live bitrate table on that page to choose a bitrate for the output resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate appropriate for every upload.

  • Keep the uploaded frame rate the same as the recorded frame rate unless a delivery requirement gives you a reason to change it. Frame-rate conversion can affect motion cadence.
  • Confirm the output resolution and select the bitrate row that matches both the resolution and frame rate.
  • Check the SDR color setting and the selected audio codec and sampling rate before exporting.

These recommendations address YouTube. They should not be assumed to match Twitch, TikTok, Instagram, or a particular editor’s requirements; consult the destination’s own current specifications when publishing elsewhere.

Convert and check a gameplay recording step by step

  1. Choose the capture format and encoder in OBS. Start with MKV for a resilient recording container, then select a quality preset and encoder your system can handle. Save a short sample and inspect it before recording a long session.
  2. Keep the original capture. Treat the MKV as your master when storage permits. This gives you a source to return to if an edit or export needs to be redone.
  3. Remux if only the container needs to change. In OBS, select File > Remux Recordings, choose the MKV, and create an MP4 when required by your editor or upload workflow.
  4. Re-encode only when the streams or settings must change. In your editor or transcoder, choose the destination-compatible video and audio settings. For YouTube, follow the platform’s current guidance for codec, frame rate, resolution, SDR color, audio, and bitrate.
  5. Inspect the finished file before processing more footage. Play a short export and check detail during fast motion, color, audio-track selection, synchronization, file size, and whether the target editor imports it correctly.

Common conversion mistakes to avoid

  • Recording directly to a less resilient format for convenience: Capture to MKV, then remux after the session when MP4 is needed.
  • Expecting remuxing to fix everything: It cannot change an incompatible codec, resolution, or frame rate. Those changes require an export or transcode.
  • Changing frame rate without a delivery reason: Preserve the recorded frame rate for YouTube unless a specific requirement calls for conversion.
  • Using lossless recording for every long session: OBS’s approximate 7 GB-per-minute figure for its Lossless preset illustrates how quickly storage needs can grow.
  • Assuming one export profile fits every service: Check the current specifications of the platform or editor you are targeting.
  • Skipping a test export: A brief compatibility and playback check can catch missing audio, sync problems, or unwanted changes in motion and color before a large recording or library is committed.
