A workstation video showing many social-media screens is a vivid illustration of the dead internet theory, but it does not prove that one autonomous agent ran fifty accounts—or that the internet is mostly bots. The footage and the poster’s explanation are claims about one setup; traffic studies measure automated web requests, not who wrote social posts or took part in conversations.
What the workstation video reportedly shows
A September 21, 2026 article on DEV Community by pablo padlo describes a video posted on X two days earlier. It reportedly shows a workstation with numerous emulated smartphone screens displaying social accounts, feeds, chats, and replies. The X poster reportedly claimed that a Chinese AI agent operated fifty social-media accounts around the clock.
Those details are attributed to the poster, not independently verified. The original X post was not independently retrieved, and the DEV article cautions that the footage is unverifiable at a distance: it shows a screen, but not the software stack or how much of the activity was autonomous. The visible setup may be real infrastructure; the number of accounts, operator’s nationality, and claimed degree of autonomy remain unconfirmed. DEV Community article

What “dead internet theory” claims
The dead internet theory is a sweeping claim that bots and AI have taken over much of the internet, displacing or obscuring human participation and authorship. A prominent formulation appeared in an Agora Road forum thread titled “Dead Internet Theory: Most of the Internet Is Fake.” Kaitlyn Tiffany’s 2021 reporting for The Atlantic traced the theory’s spread while describing it as ridiculous in its broadest form and acknowledging a “morsel of truth” in concerns about repetitive or artificial online activity. That history explains the theory; it does not establish that its sweeping claim is true. The Atlantic

So, is the internet mostly bots? The answer depends on what is being counted. Evidence that automated systems account for a large and growing share of certain web traffic does not show that most social posts, conversations, or people are bots. A traffic request is not an author, and a screen full of accounts does not reveal who or what created each message.
What the traffic figures measure
HUMAN Security’s 2026 State of AI Traffic & Cyberthreat Benchmark Report analyzed more than one quadrillion interactions in 2025 across its customer base. Its figures describe observed activity within those customer organizations, not a census of the whole internet.

| 7,851% year-over-year growth in agentic AI traffic | HUMAN Security’s 2026 report says the comparison starts from low 2024 volumes and covers activity in its observed customer dataset, not all internet traffic. |
| 187% growth in monthly AI-driven traffic from January to December 2025 | HUMAN Security’s 2026 report includes training crawlers, scrapers, and agents in this category; it is broader than agentic traffic alone. |
| 597% growth in AI scraper traffic from January to December 2025 | HUMAN Security’s 2026 report tracks scrapers retrieving targeted current information, a different behavior from an agent taking actions. |
| 77% of observed agentic AI activity went to product and search pages in 2025 | HUMAN Security’s 2026 report also records activity on account, authentication, and checkout pages. “Agentic” activity can involve workflows, not just passive reading. |
These are growth rates and a distribution of observed agent activity, not estimates of how much social content AI wrote. The very large agentic growth figure also starts from a low base, so it should not be read as a claim that agents already make up a similarly large share of all web activity. HUMAN Security’s 2026 report
Cloudflare said on July 1, 2026, that automated agents and bots drive “more than half of all web requests.” That is a statement about requests, not a count of people, accounts, posts, or conversations. In the same announcement, Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince said: “Now that the majority of traffic on the Internet is non-human, we must go further and act faster so that a sustainable ecosystem can emerge.” His statement describes the company’s traffic metric; it does not establish that a majority of social-media authors are non-human. Why “bot traffic” does not equal bot-authored social media
Automated systems do different jobs, and measuring requests alone does not identify who authored a post. A person may also use automation, so account operation can be mixed rather than purely human or purely automated.
- Crawler: fetches or indexes pages.
- Scraper: extracts information, often for timely use elsewhere.
- Agent: can navigate pages and take actions, such as filling forms or managing account workflows.
- Social-media account: may be operated by a person, automation, or a combination; aggregate traffic figures cannot identify authorship for each post.
A crawler fetching a page adds a web request without writing a social post. A scraper collecting information is not, by that fact alone, an account operator. An agent may take actions on a site, but a traffic benchmark does not establish whether a particular message was composed by a model, approved by a person, or posted through some combination of the two.

How to read the video alongside the statistics
The video is compelling because it makes automated account activity imaginable: many screens, many feeds, and the suggestion of one system acting at scale. But its evidentiary reach is narrow. It reportedly shows an arrangement of screens; it does not independently demonstrate the identity of the operator, the claimed fifty-account count, or the agent’s autonomy.

HUMAN Security reports rapid growth in automated AI traffic within its customer data, while Cloudflare says automated systems make more than half of web requests. Neither source measures whether human authorship and participation have been displaced across social media, and neither validates the specific video claim. Together, they support a qualified conclusion: automation is an important and growing part of web activity, but the evidence here does not prove that the internet is mostly bots in the sense of most people, posts, or conversations being artificial.
