A field-services time clock should capture when employees work, where a punch is allowed or recorded, which job the hours belong to, and how approved time reaches payroll. The right setup depends less on a particular phone than on the clock-in workflow, offline behavior, job coding, and payroll fit.
What a field-services time clock does
Unlike a clock fixed at one workplace, a field-services time clock records employee time across changing job sites. Typical workflows use a mobile app on an employee’s phone or a shared tablet kiosk. Depending on the system, punches may include GPS data, use a geofence, feed employee timesheets, and export approved hours to payroll.
For example, Workforce.com describes mobile clock-ins on iOS and Android, an on-site tablet kiosk, GPS and geofencing features, offline punches, timesheets, and payroll export. FieldServicely describes an iOS and Android app, GPS/geofence punches, offline support, and payroll export. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent comparisons or proof that every feature behaves the same way in every configuration.

Mobile phone punches
A phone-based app lets employees clock in at changing sites without installing a clock at each location. Confirm the supported operating systems and any specific hardware requirements with the vendor. The product pages reviewed describe iOS and Android support, but do not establish a universally compatible phone model or minimum device specification.

Shared tablet kiosk
A tablet kiosk can suit a fixed site or crew check-in point where employees clock in on a shared device. It may be less convenient when workers start at different locations or travel directly to a job. Check whether the chosen system supports kiosk punches and how it identifies each employee.
Understand what location features actually do
GPS-at-punch and geofencing are not interchangeable. A system may record location when an employee punches, show a location prompt, or restrict a punch outside a defined boundary. Do not assume a vendor’s “GPS time clock” label means it tracks only at clock-in, blocks every off-site punch, or achieves a particular accuracy. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the actual settings and behavior.

- When does location collection start and stop?
- Who can view location data, and how long is it retained?
- What happens when location is unavailable or a punch appears to be outside a boundary?
WebWork describes geofencing time-clock features; FieldServicely describes job-site clocking features. The descriptions establish that these feature categories exist, not that their controls or accuracy are equivalent.
Check offline punches before using the system at remote sites
At sites with weak cellular service, an offline-capable app can store a punch and sync it when connectivity returns. Workforce.com and FieldServicely describe offline punch capture or sync on their product pages. These are vendor claims, not independent tests, so verify what happens if an employee clocks in and out offline, changes devices, or has no connection for an extended period.

- Ask the vendor which actions work without a connection: clock-in, clock-out, job selection, edits, or approvals.
- Confirm how queued punches are marked and whether managers can see that they have not synced.
- Test at a real work location with the phone in the expected offline conditions, then verify the punches appear correctly after reconnection.
Make sure recorded hours map to work and payroll
For a crew that works across jobs, a total-hours timesheet may not be enough. Confirm whether employees can assign time to a job or project, whether managers can review and correct entries, and whether the resulting hours can be exported in the format your payroll process uses. Vendor materials describe timesheet review and payroll export, but do not establish compatibility with every employer’s payroll system.

For covered employers under the U.S. federal Fair Labor Standards Act, the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division says: “Any timekeeping plan is acceptable as long as it is complete and accurate.” Fact Sheet #21 describes a time clock, timekeeper, and worker-entered time as possible methods; its cited guidance does not require a particular clock or app. It says payroll records generally should be retained for at least three years, and records used to compute wages, such as time cards and work/time schedules, for two years. See the U.S. Department of Labor Fact Sheet #21, marked revised July 2008.
