FICO and VantageScore are separate families of credit-scoring models, so the same credit file can produce different numbers. For a mortgage, FICO has historically been the score most lenders use, but the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s current interim policy lets lenders delivering loans to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac choose Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0. The model, version, credit bureau and calculation date used for your specific application matter more than any score shown in a generic app.
What FICO and VantageScore actually are
A credit score is an output from a mathematical model applied to information in a credit report. FICO and VantageScore are not two names for the same calculation. They are different model families, with their own rules, versions and lender implementations.
FICO is a family of lender models
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes a FICO score as a particular brand of credit score that helps lenders estimate how likely you are to repay a loan. There is not one universal FICO number. FICO has released multiple versions, and each version can weigh information in your report somewhat differently. A lender may also use a specialized version for a particular product rather than the version displayed by a consumer service.

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion generate VantageScores by applying VantageScore’s proprietary rules to their respective credit files. VantageScore 3.0 and VantageScore 4.0 are designed to produce scores for almost all adult consumers, including people who do not have traditional credit products. That broad coverage does not mean every lender uses those versions; a creditor chooses the model that fits its underwriting policy.

One person can have many valid scores
Your score is tied to a model and a data snapshot. If the model changes, the bureau file changes, the product changes or the calculation occurs on another day, the result can change without any error in the calculation. A score shown in a banking or monitoring app can therefore be valid for the model and file used while still differing from the score a lender purchases.
Why FICO and VantageScore numbers differ
The CFPB says consumers have many credit scores because lenders use different scores for different products, formulas vary and information can come from different reporting sources. A home-loan score, credit-card score and score purchased online may all be different readings of the same person’s credit history.
Model rules
Each model decides how to interpret report information. The CFPB identifies payment history, unpaid debt, the number and type of accounts, account age, credit utilization, new applications, collections, foreclosure and bankruptcy as common scoring inputs. Models can assign different importance to those inputs, define categories differently or use different treatments for sparse or recently reported information.

Bureau files
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion maintain separate files. A creditor may report to one bureau before another, use a different account description or fail to report an account to all three. If a model reads a bureau file before a balance or payment update appears, it will calculate from older information. Two scores pulled on the same day can still differ when they come from different bureaus.

Product and lender policy
A lender selects a score that matches its product and risk rules. The model used for a mortgage is not necessarily the one used for a credit card, auto loan or personal loan. Even creditors offering the same product can approve different model versions under their own policies.
Calculation date
Credit reports change as lenders send updates. A new balance, payment, account opening, inquiry or collection can alter a score after the previous score was calculated. The CFPB specifically notes that a score can vary with the day on which it is produced.
For these reasons, avoid calling one displayed number universally correct. Each number is an output of a particular model applied to a particular bureau file at a particular time.

FICO versus VantageScore at a glance
| Comparison point | FICO | VantageScore |
|---|---|---|
| Model family | FICO, with multiple versions and product-specific models | VantageScore, including versions 3.0 and 4.0 |
| Who generates the score | A lender or score provider applies the selected FICO rules to a bureau file | Equifax, Experian or TransUnion applies VantageScore’s proprietary rules to its file |
| Data source | One or more of the three national bureau files, depending on the lender | One of the three national bureau files, depending on the provider or lender |
| Consumer coverage | Depends on the model and available report information | Versions 3.0 and 4.0 are designed to score almost all adults, including some without traditional credit products |
| Mortgage use | Most mortgage lenders have historically used FICO; Classic FICO remains approved for loans delivered to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac | FHFA’s interim policy permits VantageScore 4.0 for eligible loans delivered to those Enterprises |
| Non-mortgage use | Used by some lenders, but the exact version is lender-specific | Many lenders still use VantageScore 3.0 for non-mortgage products, according to VantageScore’s consumer FAQ |
| What a consumer app proves | Only that the app identifies and displays that particular FICO model, bureau and date | Only that the app identifies and displays that particular VantageScore model, bureau and date |
Which score do mortgage lenders use?
For mortgage applicants, the safest general answer remains FICO, because CFPB consumer guidance says most mortgage lenders use FICO scores. Mortgage underwriting commonly considers information from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and lenders generally use the middle score when deciding the rate offered. The exact model and procedure still depend on the lender and the loan channel.

The current FHFA interim policy
The Federal Housing Finance Agency currently allows lenders delivering loans to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to choose between Classic FICO and VantageScore 4.0. Classic FICO remains an approved option. FICO 10T was approved in 2022 and is planned for future use, but that plan does not mean every lender is using FICO 10T today.
FHFA’s implementation FAQ describes an interim “lender choice” phase. During this phase, a lender can deliver a mortgage using a score generated by either the Classic FICO model or VantageScore 4.0. For a given delivered loan, one of those models is selected. The policy therefore expands the permitted choices; it does not guarantee that every lender, borrower or loan file will be scored with both models.
Why the policy matters to an applicant
VantageScore 4.0 can use additional types of information, including rent-payment history, when that information is present and reported in a usable form. The availability of a newer model may therefore change which parts of a credit history are reflected, but it does not create a universal mortgage score. Your lender’s approved model, the bureau file it obtains and the date of the pull remain decisive.
What to ask before a mortgage application
- Ask which model family and exact version the lender will use: for example, Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0.
- Ask whether the lender will pull Equifax, Experian, TransUnion or all three.
- Ask when the scores will be calculated and whether a new report is required before closing.
- Ask how the lender handles multiple applicants and differing bureau results, because the lender’s underwriting policy controls that procedure.
Which score do card, auto and personal-loan lenders use?
There is no single model that all non-mortgage lenders use. Creditors choose scores by product and by their own risk policies. A card issuer can use a FICO version, VantageScore 3.0, another approved model or a score supplied through its underwriting platform. An auto lender can select a model tailored to vehicle financing, while a personal-loan provider can use a different version again.

VantageScore’s consumer FAQ says many lenders still use VantageScore 3.0 for cards and other non-mortgage products. That statement does not establish a market-wide percentage and should not be read as a promise that a particular lender uses VantageScore. The only reliable way to identify the relevant score is to ask the prospective creditor.
Questions that produce a useful answer
Do not ask only, “Which score do you use?” Ask for the model family, version, bureau or bureaus and the approximate date of the pull. A response such as “we use a credit score” leaves out the details that explain why your displayed number may not match the underwriting result.
Why a Credit Karma or banking-app score may not match your lender’s score
A service such as Credit Karma or a bank app may show a VantageScore while a lender orders a FICO score. Even if both use the same family, the versions can differ. The app may read TransUnion while the lender reads Experian, or the two providers may have received different account updates. A score calculated last week can also differ from one calculated after a new statement balance posts.
Check the label beside the number
Look for the model name, version, bureau and “as of” date. If the service does not identify all of those items, treat the number as a monitoring indicator rather than a prediction of the lender’s exact score. Monitoring is still useful for spotting direction changes and possible report errors; it simply cannot tell you which score a specific creditor will buy.

Interpret the size of the gap carefully
A small difference may reflect normal model or timing variation. A large difference deserves an audit of the underlying reports: an account might be missing from one bureau, a balance might have updated on only one file, or a collection or public-record item might appear differently. Do not assume that the higher number is the one a lender must use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to prepare before applying for credit
- Identify the lender’s score. Obtain the exact model family, version, bureau and planned calculation date from the lender or broker.
- Review all three reports. Pull your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion reports and compare account names, balances, limits, payment status, dates and collections. A mortgage lender generally reviews all three bureaus, so checking only one can miss a problem.
- Dispute inaccurate information early. If a report contains an incorrect late payment, balance, account ownership record or collection, start the dispute well before a major application. Allow time for the bureau and the reporting company to investigate and update the file.
- Time your application. Ask when the lender will obtain the score, then avoid making unnecessary credit applications or large balance changes immediately beforehand. A report snapshot can change between an initial estimate and the formal underwriting pull.
- Save the details. Record the score model, bureau and date shown by every monitoring service and every lender conversation. This makes later differences diagnosable instead of mysterious.
Habits that help across both model families
No behavior guarantees a particular score, because each model weighs data differently. The following practices address inputs that the CFPB identifies as common to scoring models and therefore tend to be more portable than optimizing for one app’s number.
- Pay every account on time. Payment history is a central scoring input, and a reported delinquency can affect several models.
- Keep revolving balances well below their limits. Utilization is calculated from reported balances and limits. Paying down a balance before the statement is reported can change the snapshot a model sees.
- Limit unnecessary new applications. New applications and inquiries can be considered by scoring models. Apply when the credit is needed rather than collecting speculative approvals.
- Maintain older accounts where appropriate. Account age and the number and type of accounts are common inputs. Closing an older account may change the age and utilization picture, so consider the consequences before closing it.
- Monitor for collections, foreclosure or bankruptcy reporting errors. These events are specifically identified in CFPB guidance as information that can affect scores. If an entry is inaccurate, document the error and dispute it.
Diagnosing a score mismatch
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The app and lender scores differ by a modest amount | Different model versions, bureaus or calculation dates | Model name, version, bureau and “as of” date on both results |
| One score changes while another does not | An account update reached one bureau file first | Recent statements, reported balances, payment status and bureau-specific reports |
| The lender’s score is much lower | A derogatory item, high reported utilization or missing positive account appears in the lender’s file or model | All three reports, especially collections, late payments, limits and account ownership |
| A score is unavailable or unusually different for a thin file | The selected model may handle limited credit history differently | Whether the model is VantageScore 3.0/4.0, a FICO version or a product-specific model |
| A mortgage estimate changes after documents are updated | The score was recalculated on a later report snapshot | Pull date, newly reported balances, new applications and lender’s re-score policy |
When to contact the lender
Contact the lender if it cannot identify the model and bureau, if the report it used contains an account that is not yours, or if a documented dispute has changed the report. Ask whether the lender can obtain a corrected report or rescore under its procedures. Do not assume that supplying a score from a consumer app will substitute for the lender’s required pull.

Which score should you watch?
Watch the score that answers your immediate question. If you are preparing for a mortgage, ask the lender which permitted model it expects to use and monitor the underlying reports from all three bureaus. If you are considering a card or personal loan, identify that creditor’s model rather than choosing a score solely because it is the highest number available. For general credit health, consistency in payments, balances and report accuracy is more useful than chasing a single score.
The practical priority is therefore not FICO versus VantageScore in the abstract. It is matching the model to the application: product, lender, bureau and date. Once those four details are known, a difference between two scores becomes an explainable feature of credit reporting rather than evidence that one score is fake.
