If fibre leaves you gassy or bloated, the type of fibre and how quickly you add it may matter as much as the total amount. Oats, psyllium and linseeds are options some people with IBS tolerate better, but none is guaranteed to be symptom-free. Start with a small change, increase gradually and track your response.

Why fibre can cause gas and bloating

Fibre is not one uniform substance. Different types have different effects: some add bulk, some form a gel, and some are fermented by gut bacteria. Rapidly fermented fibres can produce gas, and a sudden jump in total fibre can also bring on symptoms. Monash University explains that FODMAP carbohydrates can draw water into the intestine and be fermented, producing gas; for some people with IBS, the resulting water and gas can contribute to pain, bloating or altered bowel habits. Other people tolerate the same foods without symptoms.

This is why replacing one fibre source with another may help some people, while simply adding more fibre may not. Wheat bran, inulin, and fibres such as FOS and GOS can be troublesome for some people with IBS, but they are not universally unsuitable. Use your own symptom pattern and, where needed, professional guidance rather than treating any food as a blanket prohibition.

Fibre options to consider

Option What the guidance says How to approach it
Oats or oat bran Monash says they may help constipation, abdominal pain and bloating in IBS, while noting that more studies are needed. Cambridge University Hospitals also lists oats as a fibre source. Try a modest serving and adjust gradually. Treat oats as an option to test, not a guaranteed remedy.
Psyllium Monash describes psyllium as slowly fermented and less likely to trigger gas accumulation than rapidly fermented fibres. It appears well tolerated by many people with IBS and may be useful for IBS with constipation, but not everyone tolerates it. If using a supplement, follow its directions and begin with a small dose, increasing slowly over several days. Cambridge University Hospitals also recommends a gradual approach.
Linseeds (flaxseed) Monash reports that up to two tablespoons a day may improve constipation, abdominal pain and bloating, but says more studies are needed. NHS guidance also includes linseeds as an option. Introduce a small amount first and increase only if tolerated. The reported amount is not a guarantee of benefit for every person.
Kiwi Cambridge University Hospitals includes one to two kiwis per day as an option in its low-FODMAP guidance. Check current local serving guidance and your individual tolerance; suitability depends on portion and context.
Methylcellulose or sterculia Monash discusses these as non-fermentable or less gas-forming possibilities. These are supplement options rather than foods; ask a clinician or dietitian whether one is appropriate for you.
Partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) Monash describes preliminary promise; the evidence is not as established as for every other option discussed. Do not assume it will help or be tolerated; discuss persistent symptoms and supplement choices with a health professional.

For low-FODMAP planning, serving size and combinations with other foods matter. Monash directs readers to its app for current serving recommendations, so do not assume a food is low-FODMAP in every portion.

Increase fibre slowly

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says: “Adding fiber to your diet slowly, by 2 to 3 grams a day, may help prevent gas and bloating.” This gradual increase is a practical alternative to making a large change all at once. For supplements, Monash likewise advises starting with a small dose and increasing over several days toward the recommended amount.

  1. Choose one change. Add one food or supplement option rather than changing several fibre sources at once.
  2. Start small. Follow product directions for supplements, and use a modest food serving.
  3. Increase gradually. NIDDK’s suggested increment is 2 to 3 grams of fibre per day; adjust more cautiously if symptoms appear.
  4. Notice your response. Track the option, serving and symptoms so you can identify patterns rather than attributing a change to several foods at once.

Ask a clinician or dietitian for advice if symptoms are persistent or severe, or if you have a medical condition that could affect which fibre or supplement is suitable.

How low-FODMAP eating fits in

A low-FODMAP diet is not intended as a permanent elimination plan. Cambridge University Hospitals describes a restriction phase followed by gradual reintroduction and advises dietitian guidance. Monash describes an initial high-restriction phase of 2–6 weeks before transition to reintroduction. The point is to identify personal triggers and expand food choices where possible, not to avoid a broad list indefinitely.

How much fibre to aim for

Monash’s 2021 article reports recommendations of 25 g per day for adult women and 38 g per day for adult men. These are general figures reported by Monash, not an individualized prescription; your needs may differ. The same article reports that 95% of Americans consume less than those recommendations and average intake is 16 g per day. That statistic is specific to the United States and should not be read as a global estimate.
