Choose by address and plan, not by technology label: first confirm which providers will actually serve your home, then compare their current prices, speeds, data terms, equipment, and installation requirements. Fiber, cable, and 5G home internet can each be a sensible choice; none is the universal winner.

Start by checking what is available at your address

Use the FCC National Broadband Map to search your exact street address. Note the listed providers, technologies, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds. The map is an availability screen, not a guarantee that a service can be ordered today or that your home will receive the displayed speeds.

The map separates fixed broadband—including fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless—from mobile broadband coverage. Mobile coverage is modeled and does not establish indoor coverage or eligibility for a home internet plan. For 5G home internet, confirm directly with the provider that it will sell and activate the fixed-location service at your address.

Providers submit availability data to the FCC twice a year, and the map is updated continuously. Listings can still be wrong or out of date. If the map shows a provider or technology that does not seem available, or omits one that is, the FCC explains how to challenge availability information. Its availability definition includes a connection already in service or one that could be initiated through routine installation within 10 business days, without extraordinary network-extension charges or delays. That definition is useful context, but it does not replace checking current purchasing and installation details with the provider.

Compare the actual offers, not just fiber, cable, or 5G

Once you have a shortlist for your address, compare the specific plans using the same criteria. A technology name alone does not tell you the price, performance, or terms of an individual offer.

Price over time

Read the plan’s current broadband label and the provider’s checkout details. If the advertised price is introductory, federal law requires the label to disclose the post-introductory price. Check the current offer for fees and other terms rather than relying on an old promotion or a price quoted for another address.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Download and upload performance

Compare both advertised download and upload speeds, along with any performance information disclosed for the plan. Download matters for activities such as streaming and downloading files; upload can matter more for video calls, sending large files, or other upload-heavy work. A maximum advertised speed on the FCC map is not a prediction of the speed every home will receive.

Data and network-management terms

Look at data allowances and network-management disclosures in the current broadband label and the provider policies linked from it. The FCC map does not report affordability or the performance a customer will actually experience.

T-Mobile 5G Gateway & Wi-Fi Router Modem Kit, Dual-Band WiFi-7 No Contract
  • 5G High-Speed Internet Gateway Designed for fast and stable connectivity using T-Mobile 5G network
  • Model G5AR-1 Official T-Mobile gateway device
  • Dual-Band WiFi Support Provides reliable wireless connections for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Wide Device Compatibility Works with PCs, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart home devices

Installation, equipment, and cancellation

Ask whether installation is available on your schedule, whether there are standard charges or construction needs, and whether the plan requires a contract or cancellation fee. Check what modem, gateway, or router is included, whether you can use your own equipment, and which models are compatible.

A router provides Wi-Fi inside the home; it is separate from the broadband connection itself. If you already have one, check that it is compatible before buying another. If you need to improve Wi-Fi coverage, compare equipment options against your provider’s requirements rather than assuming a particular router is necessary.

What the three technology labels mean for your decision

Option What to verify Why the label is not enough
Fiber Whether fiber is offered at your exact address, plus the available plan’s upload and download speeds, price, and terms. Fiber is a fixed wired broadband technology listed separately on the FCC map, but it is not available at every address.
Cable Whether cable is offered at your exact address and the specific plan’s speeds, price, and terms. Cable is also a fixed wired broadband technology. The technology name alone does not establish the details of a particular offer.
5G home internet Whether the provider will sell and activate its fixed home service at your address, and the plan’s current speeds, price, and terms. Some fixed home services use a 4G LTE or 5G NR mobile network as terrestrial fixed wireless. A mobile coverage display does not prove indoor service eligibility or performance at your home.

The FCC distinguishes fixed wireless service sold for a fixed location from general mobile broadband coverage. Its mobile coverage is modeled, and actual experience can vary with the device, cell capacity, and terrain. A phone showing a 5G signal is therefore not enough to determine whether a provider will offer its home plan at that location.

A practical way to choose

  1. Search the exact address on the FCC map. Record the listed providers, technologies, and advertised download and upload speeds.
  2. Confirm eligibility with each provider. Ask whether the service can be ordered at the address, what installation involves, and whether construction or extra charges apply.
  3. Review each current broadband label and checkout. Compare the monthly price now and after any introductory period, fees, speeds, data terms, and network-management information.
  4. Check the household requirements. Give particular attention to upload performance for frequent video calls or large file transfers, and to data terms if household usage is high.
  5. Verify practical terms before ordering. Confirm included and compatible equipment, installation timing, contract and cancellation terms, and any conditions that matter to your household.

Choose the offer that best fits your needs among services the provider confirms it can deliver at your address. If two plans look close, compare their full current terms and installation details rather than assuming one technology is automatically faster, cheaper, or more reliable.
