The specific claim that a festival-goer’s $1,000 Airbnb booking was canceled and relisted for $9,200 is not corroborated by the available reporting. Separate reports describe similar allegations around major events, but they do not establish that this exact incident happened. If your Airbnb host canceled and you believe the same dates were relisted at a higher price, save the evidence and contact Airbnb support promptly.
What is confirmed about the $1,000-to-$9,200 claim?
The reporting available here does not identify or verify the guest, host, location, festival, or amounts in the headline. Those details should be treated as an allegation, not an established finding.

There are separate, attributed reports of event-related cancellations and more expensive relistings. KESQ reported on April 8, 2026, that Coachella attendee Andrea Gutierrez said her Palm Desert booking was canceled after the host cited city rules. She said the same listing appeared a few hours later for $5,000 instead of $2,000. That is her account as reported by KESQ, not an adjudicated finding or confirmation of the $9,200 claim. Read KESQ’s report.
In a different case, ABC News reported in 2024 that Sydney concertgoers said accommodation bookings had been canceled at short notice, leaving them to seek costly alternatives. A separate Consumer Rescue account concerned a Palm Springs wedding-week booking; the reporter said the rental reappeared for the same dates at a higher price. These cases show that similar complaints have been reported, not that every cancellation is a deliberate attempt to charge more. Read ABC News’s report and Consumer Rescue’s separate case account.

What to do if an Airbnb host canceled and relisted your dates
- Preserve the record. Keep the booking confirmation, cancellation notice, messages with the host, and any support correspondence. Take dated screenshots of the listing, its calendar, price, and dates if it appears again. Include the listing URL or ID when available. A screenshot can help show what you saw, but it does not by itself establish why the host canceled.
- Contact Airbnb support promptly. Provide your reservation details and the evidence of any apparent same-property, same-date relisting. ABC reported Airbnb advised guests who see the same property relisted for the same dates to contact its 24-hour support team. Ask support to review the cancellation and explain what assistance is available for your reservation.
- Keep communication in the platform. Use Airbnb’s messaging and support channels where possible, and save copies of the responses. A clear timeline—when the host canceled, when the listing reappeared, and what was said—makes the issue easier to explain.
- Check the local rules cited by the host. Rules differ by city and property. In the Palm Desert example, a city representative told KESQ that permitted operators could rent on weekends and during special events, disputing a claimed general weekend prohibition. That statement concerns Palm Desert; it does not determine the rules elsewhere.
Can an Airbnb host cancel and charge more?
A host cancellation and a later higher-priced listing can look suspicious, but the timing alone does not prove the reason for cancellation or establish a policy violation. Airbnb told KESQ it used cancellation fees, calendar blocks, and a ban on relisting at a higher price as deterrents. KESQ also described fees of 25% to 50% of the reservation total for host cancellations within 48 hours; that figure is KESQ’s account of the policy in April 2026, not a verified statement of current terms. Check Airbnb’s current policy and ask support to assess the specific reservation.
Legal rights also depend on where the stay was booked and the circumstances. ABC News quoted Australia’s consumer regulator as saying accommodation providers must comply with Australian Consumer Law, including not misleading consumers about cancellation reasons. That guidance is specific to Australia and is not a universal rule for Airbnb stays in other countries.

How to find replacement lodging after a festival cancellation
When an event is near, compare alternatives on more than nightly price. A replacement that appears cheap may be far from the venue or may not fit the original group’s needs. Before booking, check:
Recommended Free Tools
- Total cost: Compare the full amount shown at checkout, including applicable fees and taxes, rather than the nightly rate alone.
- Travel time: Check distance to the venue and realistic transport options for the event dates.
- Capacity and beds: Confirm occupancy limits, bed configuration, and whether the sleeping arrangements work for everyone in your group.
- Cancellation terms: Read the replacement booking’s cancellation and refund conditions before paying.
- Listing details: Verify the property information, dates, and host communication in the booking platform, and retain the new confirmation.
In the separate Palm Springs case, Consumer Rescue reported that after escalation the host agreed to honor the original booking price. That was one case-specific outcome; it does not guarantee that a host or platform will provide the same resolution in another dispute.
