A camouflaged Ferrari 296 prototype has been reported with aggressive aerodynamic details, but Ferrari has not confirmed a road-going model called the “296 Challenge Stradale.” The name, its specifications and any launch date remain unverified. The photos offer clues about a possible road car—not a Ferrari announcement.
What the reported spy shots show
SlashGear’s Oct. 8, 2026 report describes a red-camouflaged prototype with neon-yellow Flow-Viz paint, larger front intakes, two stacked flaps ahead of the front wheels, exposed low side skirts, twin exhausts and a wider-looking stance. Flow-Viz is used to visualize airflow; its presence does not establish the final shape or performance of a production car. These are observations and interpretations of a prototype, not confirmed equipment for a finished model. SlashGear’s report
The car in SlashGear’s latest images reportedly lacks a large rear wing that appeared on prototypes in earlier images. A separate Aug. 23, 2026 report from The Supercar Blog describes prototypes with a swan-neck wing and large end plates, along with a prominent front splitter, rear diffuser, mesh-type fascia, low side skirts and dual center exhausts. The differing images could reflect different prototype setups; neither account establishes which parts, if any, will reach production. The Supercar Blog’s report

Is the 296 Challenge Stradale an official Ferrari model?
Not in the Ferrari material cited here. Ferrari has officially announced the 296 Challenge, a competition car, and the 296 Speciale, a special-version road car. The name “296 Challenge Stradale” is used tentatively in spy-shot coverage for a possible road-going counterpart to the race car; Ferrari has not confirmed that name or the road model in the sources reviewed.
The distinction matters because the established cars have very different roles and powertrains, while the prototype’s identity and specifications are still uncertain:

| Vehicle | Intended use | Powertrain and stated output | Status of information |
|---|---|---|---|
| 296 Challenge | Ferrari Challenge competition car | 2,992 cc, 120-degree twin-turbo V6 without the hybrid component; 700 cv at 7,500 rpm and 740 Nm at 6,000 rpm | Official Ferrari specifications announced in 2023 |
| 296 Speciale | Special-version, mid-rear-engined plug-in hybrid berlinetta | 880 hp combined output, according to Ferrari’s Apr. 29, 2025 announcement | Official Ferrari announcement |
| Possible 296 road prototype | Reported potential road-going counterpart to the 296 Challenge | Unknown; media reports speculate about a non-hybrid V6 and around 720 hp | Unconfirmed by Ferrari; figures are reporting and estimates |
Ferrari’s 2023 296 Challenge announcement gives the race car’s output as 700 cv, not hp. Those figures belong to the competition model and should not be attributed to the rumored road car. Ferrari’s 296 Speciale announcement describes its hybrid powertrain as producing 880 cv combined and says its aerodynamic solutions increase downforce by 20% versus the 296 GTB. Those are Speciale figures, not specifications for the spy-shot prototype.

SlashGear says Ferrari has not disclosed power or performance for the reported road car. It relays rumors that the car may omit the hybrid system, produce about 720 hp and weigh 2,866 pounds dry. The Supercar Blog separately reports an expected non-electrified twin-turbo V6, around 720 hp and an estimated dry weight of about 1,300 kg. Those weight estimates are broadly similar, but they remain media estimates—not Ferrari specifications. SlashGear The Supercar Blog

Both reports also point to a possible November debut; SlashGear says it could join the lineup in 2027. Neither timing claim is an official Ferrari schedule. Until Ferrari publishes details, the powertrain, output, mass and timing should all be treated as speculation.

The reported prototype appears more aggressive than a standard 296, with visible aero changes and details that suggest Ferrari may be evaluating a road-going car. But spy photos cannot establish the final design, and the reports differ on whether a large rear wing is fitted. Ferrari’s official material provides useful reference points—the non-hybrid 296 Challenge race car and the plug-in hybrid 296 Speciale—but neither confirms the rumored model’s configuration or performance.
