Micron expects memory and storage supply to stay constrained in 2027 and 2028, and says physical AI—including humanoid robots—could add to demand by the end of the decade. But the 200GB-plus figure is not a forecast that every robot will ship with that much RAM in 2030: Micron cites that memory level for advanced autonomous vehicles and says robots could have comparable requirements.
What Micron is forecasting for 2027 and 2028
In prepared remarks for its fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call on September 30, 2026, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said, “We expect memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026.” The company’s market outlook separately uses calendar years: it expects the DRAM and NAND industries to remain supply constrained in calendar 2027 and 2028, even as shipments grow. Micron’s prepared remarks
Micron forecast calendar-year DRAM bit shipments to grow in the low-20s percentage range in each of 2027 and 2028. It forecast NAND bit shipments to grow approximately in the mid-20s percentage range over those years. These are shipment-growth forecasts, not promises that supply will meet demand: Micron expects both markets to remain constrained.

Why the company says supply may take time to catch up
Micron says it has “no line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance,” despite planned cleanroom capacity and robust demand, including additional customer requests. The company’s fab schedule helps explain why new capacity does not immediately remove a constraint:
- ID1: wafer output is forecast to begin in mid-calendar 2027.
- ID2: wafer output is forecast to begin in late-calendar 2028.
- First New York fab: initial wafer output is expected in calendar 2030.
Initial output is not the same as full production. Micron says new facilities take time to ramp, with output becoming more meaningful a few quarters after initial production begins. The planned cleanroom availability is intended to help from late 2028 onward. Those milestones describe Micron’s plans; they do not establish the timing or scale of industry-wide relief.

What the 200GB-plus robot claim actually means
Micron’s September 30, 2026 remarks say Level 4-and-higher autonomous vehicles typically contain more than 200GB of memory and multiple terabytes of storage. The company says humanoid robots are expected to have comparable memory and storage requirements. Micron’s physical-AI remarks
That is a comparison of expected requirements, not a claim that every robot will ship in 2030 with 200GB or more of RAM. Micron gives no 2030 robot shipment count and does not say that the cited vehicle memory figure applies to every humanoid robot. It says physical AI could become a significant driver of memory and storage demand by the end of the decade, and reports that several physical-AI customers are sampling next-generation products.

- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 overclocking desktop memory RAM kit (2x16GB) that operates at 6000MHz to improve gaming, multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—benefit from lower latency for higher frame rates, perfect for AAA games
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Compatible 13th gen intel core CPUs or newer AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPus
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- Top-Tier Overclocking: 32GB of DDR5 RAM 32GB, 6000MHz at extended timings of 36-38-38-80 provide stable overclocking performance and lower latency compared to usual Crucial Pro Series DRAM modules
Memory and storage are different things. The more-than-200GB figure refers to memory; the multiple-terabyte figure refers to storage. Neither should be read as a claim about a robot’s RAM alone.
What this could mean if you are buying or upgrading a PC
Micron’s industry outlook is not a recommendation to buy RAM now, nor does it show that every computer owner needs an upgrade. It also cannot tell you whether a particular laptop or desktop can be upgraded: memory type, form factor, and system design determine compatibility.

- Elevated performance for gamers & creators: 128GB kit DDR5 for enhanced productivity—accelerate demanding tasks and enjoy higher frame rates with this high-speed RAM
- Enhanced PC performance: Crucial Pro RAM 128GB kit with 2x64GB DDR5 operating at the speed of 5600MHz with 5200MHz or 4800MHz downclock support
- Top-tier RAM capacity: 128GB DDR5 RAM kit (2x64GB) compatible with latest Intel Core Ultra Series 2 & 14th Gen Core CPUs and AMD Ryzen 9000 Series desktop CPUs and above
- Low-profile, matte black heat spreader: Enhance your gaming rig with a sleek, modern look. With our integrated low-profile heat spreader, Crucial DDR5 Pro can even fit in smaller PCs
- Supports Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO on the same module: Achieve easy performance recovery on CPUs that suppress rated memory speeds with Intel XMP 3.0 or AMD EXPO turned on in the UEFI/BIOS settings. Get the full value of your investment without overpaying for performance
If you are already considering a desktop upgrade, check your motherboard and system documentation for supported memory type and capacity before choosing a kit. A 32GB DDR5 kit is only an option for a compatible system; it is not a way to avoid industry supply constraints or a purchase justified by Micron’s forecast alone.

The projections come from Micron, a memory and storage manufacturer, and the company labels its remarks forward-looking and dependent on current assumptions. It warns that actual results may differ materially. Treat the 2027–2028 outlook and the physical-AI demand possibility as company forecasts, not settled outcomes. The remarks do not establish future consumer prices, the duration of any shortage, or how many robots will be deployed.
