A feature-flag admin page is the control plane for configuring flags and environments; application SDKs evaluate those settings at runtime. In a server-rendered app, evaluate flags in trusted server code and send the browser only the result it needs—not credentials, private rules, or unrelated evaluation data. To manage cost, first identify the provider’s actual billable unit, then map usage to an accountable service or team.
How do feature flag admin pages work?
The admin interface is where authorized people create flags, configure environments, and change flag behavior. An SDK in an application evaluates a flag when the application needs to decide what to show or do. A managed feature-flag system may also provide environment management and a record of changes.
The admin UI and runtime SDK are connected parts, but they serve different roles: the UI governs configuration, while SDKs make evaluations in an application. OpenFeature provides a vendor-neutral client API for working with feature-flag providers; it does not replace each provider’s admin service, audit features, or billing model. OpenFeature’s introduction describes that distinction.
What differs between server-side and client-side evaluation?
Evaluation location affects what data is exposed. LaunchDarkly documents that its server SDKs fetch and cache full flag rules in memory, while its client SDKs do not download the entire ruleset because data on an end-user’s device can be inspected. This is a product-specific example, not a universal description of every provider. Check the behavior of the SDK you use. LaunchDarkly’s architecture overview explains its model.

How do I safely render feature flags on the server?
For a server-rendered request, evaluate flags in trusted server code using the provider’s appropriate server SDK. Use the result to choose the response, and include only the intended user-facing result in the HTML or browser bootstrap payload. Anything sent to the browser is visible to that user, so keep server SDK keys, privileged configuration, private rules, and unrelated evaluation data on the server.
- Keep privileged configuration server-side. Store server SDK credentials and configuration outside browser-delivered code and payloads.
- Evaluate in the request’s trusted context. Use the server SDK and the context required by your provider to evaluate the relevant flag.
- Render the minimum result. Return the selected content or only the flag value the browser genuinely needs; do not serialize a full ruleset or credentials.
- Enforce permissions separately. A feature flag is a release and behavior control, not an authorization system. If an operation protects data or an action, check authorization independently on the server.
Server-side evaluation narrows browser exposure, but it does not by itself remove every privacy concern: consider what user or account attributes are sent to the provider and what is included in any client response.

How should access to the admin page be governed?
Treat the admin interface as a high-impact configuration surface. Limit production write access, use least privilege, protect account access, control API credentials, and preserve a usable history of changes. Make the project and environment clear before a user changes a flag; for high-impact changes, consider a confirmation and a reason or ticket reference.

Its product page says, “Prebuilt roles allow you to quickly give users read, write or admin access to features within LaunchDarkly.” These are LaunchDarkly examples; available controls and granularity can depend on product and plan, and other providers may work differently. - Ensure the change record captures who changed what and when, and determine whether your operational or compliance needs require export or longer retention.
- Check the vendor’s current plan terms for role controls, authentication features, and audit-log availability rather than assuming every tier includes the same capabilities.
How do I attribute feature-flag costs to a service or team?
There is no universal feature-flag cost meter. Start with the unit in your current provider contract and plan—not an assumed per-flag or per-evaluation rate. For each billable unit, establish its definition, aggregation period, included allowance, tier or overage behavior, and the usage source you will reconcile against an invoice.
LaunchDarkly’s materials distinguish concepts such as client-side monthly active users (MAU) and server-side service connections, and describe analytics usage metrics including client connections, MAUs, experiments, and exports. Those concepts do not establish a current price or entitlement for every plan. Confirm current amounts and included usage in the live pricing and plan documentation. See LaunchDarkly pricing, billing documentation, and analytics documentation.

Build a usage allocation record
Use one row per provider meter and allocation owner. Keep the contract definition and the operational attribution visible together so a finance or engineering review can trace an allocation back to its source.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Provider and billable unit | The meter name and exact definition in the current contract or plan. |
| Aggregation period | The window used to count or report the unit. |
| Owning service or team | The accountable application, service, environment, or team, using a stable tag or inventory entry. |
| Usage source | The provider report, export, or other source used to reconcile usage. |
| Allowance and tier behavior | Included amount, if any, and the applicable overage or tier rules from the current terms. |
| Review date | When the unit definition and allocation were last checked against the provider’s current terms. |
For shared infrastructure, duplicate environments, or usage that cannot be assigned cleanly, document the allocation method and its limits. A transparent shared allocation is more useful than false precision.

What should I compare when choosing an admin system?
Compare the operational properties that affect your trust boundary, governance, and ability to explain the bill. Do not treat a shared SDK interface as evidence that providers have identical controls or pricing.
- Evaluation and exposure: where evaluations happen and what configuration or results reach browsers.
- SDK and environment support: whether the provider supports the application runtimes and environment model you need.
- Access controls: role granularity, production safeguards, authentication, and credential controls.
- Auditability: what changes are recorded, how long records remain available, and whether they can be exported.
- Usage and attribution: the actual billable unit, usage visibility, and whether reported usage can be assigned to owners.
- Portability: whether a standards-based client API helps reduce provider coupling, while recognizing that admin, audit, and billing capabilities remain provider-specific.
OpenFeature addresses portability at the client API layer; it does not make provider-specific admin features or commercial terms interchangeable. OpenFeature’s introduction outlines its vendor-neutral API.
